FISHING HUT WINDOW BY THE FISHING HUT I’LL WAIT BY THE RIVER Our latest Featured Artist is Alison Lumb. Alison’s work focuses on places we are drawn to when we need a moment of escape and respite. Sometimes her images include figures caught in moments of suspension: pausing by the river, reading, waiting for someone or something or just idling around. Sometimes only the landscape features, so there is a direct the relationship with the viewer. Her figurative work has been described as ‘snapshots from dreams’ and the figures which appear in some of them as ‘characters waiting to be given their lines.’ Alison studied Fine Art at the City Lit and Morley College in London for several years while pursuing her career as a television drama producer. She produced drama series and mini-series for the UK’s major broadcasters. A full-time professional artist since 2013, Alison was previously a member of Southbank Printmakers Gallery in London and is now a member of Richmond Printmakers. a co-operative of professional artists based in and around Richmond-upon-Thames. Her new print, FISHING HUT WINDOW, fresh from the studio, is shown here. All work is available to buy from Alison’s website shop: www.alisonlumbfineart.co.uk @alisonlumbartist #screenprint #printmaker #printmaking by @printmakerscouncil

Three recent works by Charlotte Staunton, our Featured Artist. To be perfect for a moment and Before I am nothing, forever are linocuts inspired by the peonies of Doric Place, a quiet flowering walkway in Woodbridge, where the blooms arrive in a flurry of ruffles and are gone almost before anyone has finished admiring them. Our Featured Artist Charlotte Staunton has created a series of linocuts inspired by one very special birch tree that stood near the artist’s home until it was recently felled by rot, and it is very much missed. The prints are painterly reduction linocuts, made by cutting away a little more of the plate after each layer of colour is printed, until almost nothing is left of it. Staunton works intuitively with colour and form, letting each cut and each shade whisper what should come next. Birch at sunset, Linocut, Artwork size: 30.5 x 40.5 cm, Edition size: 15 Edwyn birch, Linocut, Artwork size: 30.5 x 40.5 cm, Edition size: 8, Price £225 Winter birch, Linocut, Artwork size: 20 x 30.5 cm, Edition size: 12, Price £165 #featuredartist #linocut #silverbirch #reductionlinocut @escapade_prints by @printmakerscouncil

Stephen Mumberson RE “Sourcing Print Artwork “ How to start or source a print? Visual artists take differing routes and methods to establish themes ,direction or subject. The end result of a print takes an amount of rehearsal, development of thought before being translated in the various processes and differing methods of printmaking. The end production maybe the result of several ideas, reviewed and reworked, a struggle with a theme searching for a form or print application. Some their ideas are established from personal experience, lived knowledge of a particular area or a philosophical /psychological sense of subject more emotively defined. In one sense this are mind maps of those impressions, visual experiences, interests or research that have been carried out within an individuals practice. For others feelings and formal concerns are to the fore, colour ,texture, line and sensual experiences drive the context of the art.Whatever the selected elements of interest for the artist,a method of selection finding sources, research and editing is required. Times have changed from my ‘70’s training, the appearance of the personal computer during the 1980’s along with the WEB have become ubiquitous inmost homes, offices and studios has changed the potential to research or ‘tour’ around ideas and interests. Back in my college days the notebook or sketch book were the focus of an individual search full of material gathered by drawing, collected clippings, postcard from museums/galleries or photocopies that had only recently progressed from fast fading copies and for a price could be in colour -a search required a physical journey trips to collections in galleries or museums or to researched sources through books, library of specialist knowledge or substantial published research. Now through the computer we can access virtual collections of material in many differing forms information being sited across the world but accessed by the web. Reference to a film can be accessed without waiting for a particular showing and be easily supported by critical text/histories by a computer-most information can be accessed directly and in overwhelming detail. Knowledge feels to an e by @printmakerscouncil
Stephen Mumberson RE “Sourcing Print Material” continued Chance and accident can still occur in the virtual world usually through mishandling or mistaken use.In the digital world the flow of thought and production are fast regulated and corrected. Programmed making, construction of work becomes distanced from the original curator, mediate by software as to form and outcome .The distance between artist and artwork contain .Works can be transmitted great distances across the world to digital devices which will given a printed form based on the data sent.Much has already been written on the distancing of originator’s hand to the production of art, which may be the way of the future. But there are arguments that maintain the importance of the human physical involved in the crafting of art in its various forms, where the fluid conjunctions and certainties of knowledge are best tasted. Surely Printmakers must be openly aware of those particular formal qualities within the materials use, the machinery(presses), plates/blocks ,tools and applied methods create the gramma and lexicon of meaning plus reflection of subject’s context in the made work. To be interested in print as a practice within its own terms. Returning to sourcing print work,i have always worked preparation ideas through sketch/note books, preferring to progress ideas through several stages following themes, paths of different directions and dead ends. Many ideas stray away from the minds eye picture of the work ,not going anywhere but yet have value as potential scope to be revisit in the future.Hence the sketch books are a storage of dead ends awaiting a reawakening at a future date with a renewed consideration. The sketch books fall into two forms, firstly as scrap book collections of found labels, imagery, clippings, postcards, collected bit and pieces of interest. A Magpie collection of found and visually interesting from the every day life. The other sketch bookstore more dynamic being collection of directly printed plates, relief blocks, collage prints, mistakes and experimentation via printing directly onto the pages of the sketch book. With no particular plan -other than, try that and see. The by @printmakerscouncil
