In 2020, I had the honor of recording PURPLE, an elegy for my late grandmother, Anna Veit, with @eboniesmithmusic and @myark55. It was a magical moment inspired by the multidimensional choreographic ritual PURPLE by @slmdances. I wrote it while watching an early iteration in the audience, via a process I call a contact literary improv.

Thank you @sydmosley for weaving a work that inspired me to honor my grandmother on her death anniversary, and by extension, all my ancestors. Thank you Ebonie for believing in a poem I wrote in my phone that night enough to talk me into going to the studio to record with a sense of urgency. Your gift is exceptional behind the boards. You brought out the best in me. Thank you Noah for providing the heartbeat to this, and working with me until something clicked.

As always, thank you to Oludumare, my elevated ancestors, and Orisha for guiding me.

Awóyemi Prolific Jones is an Afro-Indigenous Futurist artist, genealogist, educator, and organizer. Jones is the author of Ofrenda: para las ancestras, which synthesizes family stories, genealogical research, and ancestral practices. He’s facilitated workshops at the Weeksville Heritage Center, the Association for the Study of African American Life History (ASALH), and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. He currently teaches Integrated Arts at Ember Charter Schools, and owns the Owo Foro Adobe publishing and performance collaborative.⁠

At no cost, participants chart their family lineages and take tests from African Ancestry to uncover their ancestral genome, conduct oral history interviews, engage in Indigenous ancestral spiritual rituals, and synthesize their findings in an artistic presentation at Bailey’s Cafe in Bed-Stuy.⁠

Yesterday was a dream come true. My dear friend @ebonynoellegolden invited me to be a part of The Divining: Ceremonies from in the name of the m/other tree. In true @jupiterperformancestudio fashion, we engaged the community of Harlem, singing in the streets, walking, dancing, and engaging in community performance ritual.

In the spirit of the ancestors, I was surprised and elated to reconnect with my cousin @afroanarchy, who shared the same performance space with me.

Yesterday I sat at the feet of legendary elders, and fed two braids with one seed. This amazing experience was co-presented by the @apollotheater and @natblacktheatre. The poetry I wrote and shared for this event lives at the intersection of my Egungun @laundromat_proj residency and my Ifa practice under the tutelage of @alaje256 @the256healingcenter.

Thank you Ebony, and congratulations on the beginning of an amazing event.
