RCA - MA Architecture 2026 / 2027 ADS7: ALTERNATIVE ROUTINEERS

The Studio emphasizes the value of tangible artifacts as
embodied forms of knowledge: we’ll describe gestures
through objects and instruments, we’ll portray habits through the spaces that make them possible. At the same time, we will produce new architectural realities primarily by redesigning the habits that occupy them.
Ultimately, we will design buildings as places of convivial, habitual engagement, where people spend a significant amount of time conceiving, performing and challenging alternative routines - together with others.

RCA - MA Architecture 2026 / 2027 ADS7: ALTERNATIVE ROUTINEERS

This year we will explicitly mobilise the ordinary as a form of architectural critique - actively
rewriting the mundane choreographies of cohabitation, labor, and leisure to enable new spaces of playful activism.

If last year we explored convivial dynamics in the context of journeys, routes, in 2026/27
we’ll become Routine-ers: active handlers, agents of change - that sample and elevate specific acts of daily life, reinventing them as specialised crafts, performative pieces and spatial assemblages.

We’ll start with the ordinary, while simultaneously finding conscious yet exceptional alternatives: we’ll be subverting everyday protocols and routines - investigating fringe,
counter-cultural, non-normative ways of operating within urban or domestic, public or private, environments.

ADS7: ALTERNATIVE ROUTINEERS

We are back in exploring conviviality as fundamentally connected to subtle quotidian practices, in equilibrium between daily habits and creative acts of improvisation.

ADS7 consistently relies on conviviality as a tool of gentle, socio-political resistance -
rejecting passive interactions in favour of active bodily engagement, exuberant performances and nuanced everyday rituals.

ADS7 Fieldtrip in Bangkok @bangkok_kunsthalle

Originally a printing house, divided into three buildings that have since been unified—it was severely damaged
by a fire in 2001 and remained abandoned for 23 years.. we have entered the world of the Kunsthalle with @stefano_rabolli_pansera and its artistic vision.

The Live Project unfolded as a short, intense artist residency: it focused on the journey between Bangkok and @khaoyai_art_forest - two venues - both vehicles of the same institution - experimenting with alternative approaches to site-specificity, through new notions of dwelling, rewilding and domestication. by @rca_ads7

ADS7 Fieldtrip in Bangkok 2025/2026

An exposed concrete frame infilled with red brickwork, a patio for future extensions, silver curtains and platforms for many adaptations- a house becoming something else!

Thank you @bangkoktokyoarchitecture for your generosity and welcoming us in the K house 🏠

ADS7 fieldtrip in Bangkok 2025/2026

Eight-meter walls that invite you to explore and openings towards the landscape. The kantana film school is organized into 5 different areas– administration, lecture rooms, a workshop, library and a canteen– all connected by a network of axial hallways, delineated by the undulating vertical planes of brick. While in the Elephant’s world the corridors are elephantsized to cater to the animals, and the outdoor parts are interspersed with ponds that highlight the need for clean water for this endangered community’s survival.

Throwback to ADS7 fieldtrip in Bangkok ☀️ with @boonserm_premthada

It was an extraordinary experience for us to meet with Boonserm, who guided us through his architecture, immersing us in nature, in the context, sensitizing our ears and eyes to the wonderful settings of the Kantana Film Institute and the village of Ban Ta Klang. His research moves beyond objects or museum collections to become a full-scale public space—one that visitors can enter, touch, climb, and inhabit.

Postcrossing ✉️ @libbysturgeon
Cross CRIT presentation

Taking its name from a global community of postcard exchangers, Postcrossing explores how human traces persist within automated logistical systems, responding to questions of public trust raised in the government’s Green Paper on the future of the Post Office. The project reimagines the post office as a civic hub grounded in tactility, trust, and transparency. Structured around postal verbs — sorting, folding, flattening, writing, stamping — it develops a design methodology in which material and digital processes converge in architectural representation. by @rca_ads7

A few more glimpses of the Final exams of our students this year!

Jo @yueyuan.jiao took us through a journey to the loess Plateau, with a focus on Qu Village, where the soil is utilised as a primary construction material for Yaodong (cave) dwellings and intervenes on site to preserve the heritage of those cloisters and engage with the communities, re establishing new uses for this incredible context.

Shirin @shir.in___ investigates material processes and material artifacts as manifestations of specific migratory flows from South Asia to the UK Midlands, examining the role of music—specifically British Bhangra—as a convivial tool. The research traces flows that began when people started working in foundries during the 1960s and found spaces to express their voices within specific pubs, giving birth to a new musical genre. Some of these pubs continue to be spaces where the South Asian community gathers, demonstrating how spatial practices evolve alongside the communities that create them.

Zihan @zihan3940 - Works in the Malatestiana Library, rebuilding a new library, using AI as a design generator, she adopts an iterative methodology in which architectural intentions are continuously tested through interactions with multiple digital entities. This year, our brief En Route took us to incredible places. Throughout the year, students translated temporal thresholds into spatial conditions, creating architectures that foster intensity, encounter, and conviviality.

Lourenço @lourencomv investigated wasps’ spatial behaviour as a model for rethinking architectural conviviality through cybernetics, combining computational simulations, physical sensors, and recycled construction waste to propose an interspecies design methodology.

Bojan @2.b_ok worked on a sonic observatory using field recordings, revealing the hidden informational life of architecture through corridors and rooms that encourage experiencing place through listening.

Imogen @imogen_campbell identified five typologies of domestic movement across diverse geographies and histories, examining how movement can be slowed, accelerated, obstructed, concealed, exposed, or doubled to choreograph rituals, voyeurism, conflict, transition, and encounter. taken in Royal College of Art by @rca_ads7

Y1 Final Tables @rca.architecture

This year we’ve constantly been en route, identifying trajectories, creating paths, and ultimately building spatial sequences along them. Here, Xavier, Genie and Wencheng explored both the architecture of journeys and in the physical architecture(s) that unfolds along these journeys – questioning the evolving interdependencies between multiple actors: humans, other than humans, and architectural props. taken in Royal College of Art by @rca_ads7
