The Forest @universityoftasmania | Award of Excellence in the Health & Education Landscape category | @aila.tas

The Forest is the first realised project of the University of Tasmania's Urban Design Framework, also led by REALM. It represents the University's move into Hobart city through a landscape-led approach to learning, movement and campus life. It establishes a continuous ground plane that integrates landscape, water, circulation and teaching spaces.

The jury said:

“The Forest establishes a new model for health and education landscapes where living systems actively support learning, teaching and everyday campus life. [The design is commended for its] strong conceptual approach and the specific place-based research into pre-colonial landforms, stream systems and ecologies that underpinned the completed project and became the framework for learning, movement and campus life.”

Rewild Perth Demonstration Garden: Landscape Architecture Award | Community Contribution Category | AILA WA

The ReWild Perth Demonstration Garden is a catalyst project for behavioural change. It challenges the Perth norm, transforming an otherwise conventional office landscape into a living garden, proposing an alternate aesthetic and ecological connector as a demonstration of urban rewilding.

Designed in partnership with @perthnrm , the project showcases biodiversity and improved climate resilience:

“The ReWild Demonstration Garden gives substance to our vision for an ecologically thriving city achieved through community effort to increase urban habitat. It allows Perth NRM to genuinely ‘walk the talk’ - to present in a physical, compelling form the ideas and concepts central to our ‘ReWild Perth’ program.

Features and signage linked to our online Rewilds Perth resources connect people with inspiration and knowledge to create habitat in their own gardens. The overwhelming interest and support from within our professional networks is shared by the many members of the wider community who have visited.” - PerthNRM

Major Funding: @lotterywest @townofvicpark

Port Hedland Public Space and Street Tree Strategy: The Award of Excellence | Landscape Planning; Regional Achievement Award | AILA WA

The Town of Port Hedland Public Open Space and Street Tree Strategy 2025–2035 reimagines how landscape can shape one of Australia's hottest regional towns. Responding to extreme heat, water scarcity and a changing climate, the Strategy establishes Hedland's Green Network, a connected Hub and Spoke model linking parks, streets and waterways into an integrated green infrastructure network.

Developed through a partnership between the @townofporthedland, REALM, @yurragroup ( majority Indigenous-owned Pilbara business), Grafted Studio, Traditional Custodians and the community, it provides a blueprint for a cooler, greener, healthier and more resilient Hedland while offering a replicable model for Australia.

At the heart of the Strategy is Hedland's Green Network, a landscape-led Hub and Spoke model that treats major destination parks as the hubs, connected by strategically prioritised streets, neighbourhood parks, waterways and recreation corridors that form the spokes. Together, they create an integrated landscape system that strengthens ecological connections, improves everyday access to quality public space and delivers shade where it is most needed. taken in Port Hedland, Western Australia by @realmstudios_

City of Stirling Forecourt Renewal: Award of Excellence I Civic Landscape I @aila_wa awards.

REALM worked closely with the @citystirlingwa to create a space that put people, connection and community first. The project transformed the vehicle-dominated and inactivated space into a cool, green, welcoming and people-focused civic plaza - a landscape of healing and repair.

Once part of an ancient wetland linking Njookenbooro (Herdsman Lake), Lake Gwelup and Goongoongup (Claisebrook Cove), the site now reveals Country through rain gardens, endemic planting and visible water systems.

Parking was removed to prioritise movement, gathering and ceremony, including a yarning circle celebrating reconciliation and Whadjuk Noongar heritage. Repurposed concrete seating reduces waste and embodied energy, demonstrating how modest, site-responsive design can deliver lasting civic, cultural and environmental benefit.

REALM is delighted that the Crendon Street Park Naturalisation was awarded the @aila_qld Awards for Land Management and Climate Positive Design.

This project commenced as a @Landscapology project under the design direction of REALM’s Qld Principal Amalie Wright, who was invited to collaborate with project lead @E2Designlab. REALM then lead the landscape delivery phase.

At its core, this project responds to the challenge of stormwater quality improvement with a naturalised waterway that cleans water, creates habitat and brings people closer to the landscape.

The project diverts untreated stormwater from a shallow concrete drain into a meandering waterway and a series of ponds. By slowing the water, the new system captures sediment and suspended pollutants, increases groundwater infiltration and creates new aquatic and terrestrial habitat.

Rather than clearing a path for the new infrastructure, the waterway threads through an existing stand of regrowth dry sclerophyll open forest, retaining trees in the parkland and allowing water to engage with a broader floodplain.

More than 20,000 new trees, groundcovers, wetland and marsh plants strengthen the existing ecology.
We also kept felled trees on site, reusing them as habitat logs, pond-edge structures and informal seating. Sandstone boulders create informal crossings that invite people to step across the water, pause and experience the changing landscape up close.

Also recognised with an Excellence in Infrastructure Award at the 2025 Stormwater Queensland Awards, Crendon Street Park Naturalisation demonstrates how stormwater infrastructure can do more: clean water, restore habitat, support climate resilience and create new ways for people to experience natural systems.

A small act of care has grown into "A Home (Away from Home)" - a healing garden designed for patients, families and staff at Osborne Park Hospital.

Developed through a partnership between North Metropolitan Health Service and @uwa_design, @yolandalandscapes award-winning student concept reimagines the Ward 3 courtyard as a restorative, accessible and climate-resilient landscape.

Wide, curving paths accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and hospital beds, while shade, Waterwise planting, increased tree canopy and raingardens create a cooler, greener environment.

Art is woven through the garden. Led by artists @melskiart and @artflowbyalexa, residents and staff co-created colourful murals and mosaics inspired by native and endemic flora and fauna, bringing their own creativity and connection into the landscape.

Following the competition, Yolanda joined REALM for a professional placement, taking her concept through to construction-level design.
A garden designed to draw people outside, create moments of delight and offer comfort and respite during difficult times.

What if the site’s oldest residents curated the masterplan?

At Kingloch Parade, the site's protected trees became the framework for an entirely new neighbourhood. Completed in collaboration with @_sl_ab_, paths, homes and communal spaces were carefully arranged around the existing landscape, creating a walkable community that’s defined by a generous canopy of mature gum trees.

Mid-century architecture precedents provide a quiet backdrop, with sawtooth roofs and sandy brickwork sitting comfortably beneath leafy shadows as the sun moves throughout the day.
