Thank you to the Monash Architecture team and Jon Shinkfield from REALM Studios for a recent Thursday night Guest Lecture in our studio, #5 in the Inside Practice series. It was a fascinating discussion with a mix of familiar faces and new on Knowing Why, Knowing How... and Knowing Where. We soaked up methods of facilitating collaborative design with Indigenous knowledge holders while prioritising a light touch to support the more-than-human. Jon's approach of using an informed hands-off method to blend architecture, landscape architecture and ecology.

Before the planting comes the planning.

These early landscape plans show the evolution of SCQ’s public realm, mapping out greenery, pathways and places to gather, with The Commons at the heart of it all.

Meet ‘The Forest’

Hansen Yuncken has been named Tasmanian Commercial Builder of the Year for 'The Forest' at the 2026 Master Builders Tasmania Awards for Excellence.

The adaptive reuse of the University of Tasmania's heritage Forestry Building set out to cut embodied carbon by 30% - and delivered around 40%. Timber led the way, with PEFC-certified Tasmanian Oak CLT and GLT forming the structure, right through to the linings, joinery and windows.

Designed by Woods Bagot (landscape by REALMstudios) and built by Hansen Yuncken

Congratulations!

Theory and Practice: Knowing Why, Knowing How… and Knowing Where

5.30pm Drinks
6 -7pm Lecture and Discussion

Australia has always been a place of knowing, deep knowing. But since colonisation we have been operating in a state of ‘un’knowing. This talk, ‘Theory and Practice’, positions REALMstudios work in the context of knowing, where, through a framework of ‘readings, research and realisation’, site narratives are revealed, both tangible and intangible. They are uncovered by inverting convention, collaborating with Indigenous knowledge holders and prioritising the more-than-human. In this uncovering, in preference to a fixation on design solutions, there is an attention to ‘un’design, to respond to conditions and challenges, informed by systems of place and purpose. Theory and Practice; knowing why, knowing how....and knowing where.

Jon Shinkfield is a Founding Director of REALMstudios, a practice with studios in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart and Perth. He is an Urban Design/Landscape Architectural practitioner and sessional teacher. At a personal level his practise has moved significantly over the past 10 years, where his design approach has become increasingly grounded in working with First Nations peoples, close observation, expanded knowledge and incremental moves; moving further and further from the ‘set piece’ of design to a place of embracing the agency of landscape and its transformative, regenerative capacity, from a groomed monocultural colonial aesthetic to one of biodiversity and richness, of decolonisation. His work has been and is recognised year on year through state and national awards, publications and guest lectures and he continues to contribute to the academy, the institute and to government.

The Save the Kebab team. Still plotting. 🌯

After a hard-fought campaign. We’re still going.

While the Ore Obelisk cannot be physically conserved, we’re pleased it will be formally memorialised by the City of Perth in the Council House foyer. That’s an important acknowledgment of its place in our city’s cultural history.

The result was bittersweet with $118,000 set aside for the interpretation in Council House - the exact figure it would have taken to conserve the artwork back in 2021. Shame!

Thank you to everyone who stood with us. This campaign has always been about protecting Perth’s public art and cultural legacy, encouraging better decision-making, and making sure the city treats its public art collection with the care it deserves.

But don’t worry - we’re not hanging up the tongs just yet.

Next on the agenda: the Boonji Spaceman.

It was approved as a temporary installation in Stirling Gardens for 12 months. More than 18 months later, it’s still there, with no permanent home in sight after the City sought an extension.

Temporary should mean temporary.

We’ll be putting forward some much better long term homes for Boonji - places where it can be appreciated without overstaying its welcome in one of Perth’s most significant heritage gardens.

The Save the Kebab campaign continues.

Because Perth deserves public art that’s thoughtfully planned, properly managed, and worthy of our city’s cultural legacy.

Imagine knowing every neighbour on your street as a friend. That’s the idea behind cohousing.

Associates Rochelle Rosenwax and Luke Szklarz have been working with the residents of @broughamstreetcohousing to curate a masterplan rich in shared social amenity alongside 20 individual dwellings. Listen as they unpack the thinking behind this innovative model for community-led living.

What if the site’s oldest residents curated the masterplan?

At Kingloch Parade, the site's protected trees became the framework for an entirely new neighbourhood. Completed in collaboration with @_sl_ab_, paths, homes and communal spaces were carefully arranged around the existing landscape, creating a walkable community that’s defined by a generous canopy of mature gum trees.

Mid-century architecture precedents provide a quiet backdrop, with sawtooth roofs and sandy brickwork sitting comfortably beneath leafy shadows as the sun moves throughout the day.
