Come gather at Red Moon Herbs for another community pour event! It's been a while since we have hosted one of these, and we are pleased to do it again with our friends at @twinstartribe and @appalachianherbcollective.

This is a community-centered day where we gather with our friends and community to pour for our greater community. This is all followed by a potluck where we get to spend time, laugh, and eat with one another.

This is a free event, and all volunteers get to take home free products. We really hope to see you there! by @redmoonherbs

Some of us at Red Moon Herbs recently harvested Kudzu blossoms for jelly and syrup, which requires a lot more kudzu blossoms than anticipated. It was absolutely delicious paired with a charcuterie board and pastries.
The leaves are another delicious wild-foraged treat. They can be deep-fried or rolled into dolmas but are best eaten when harvested in the spring when they are young and tender.

All parts of kudzu can be used, and the versatility of kudzu is incredible once you start to learn all the ways it can be utilized. This is discussed in the article "Beyond the vine: finding uses for kudzu" written by Victoria Estes. Jeannie, @delia_of_the_greenwood, and @kudzu_culture all share their experiences with kudzu, delving into the ecological impact of the kudzu vine, the many ways it can be used, and the impact this vine has had on us, both regionally and personally.

"For the people working with kudzu, changing the narrative does not mean pretending the plant is harmless. It means recognizing that an invasive species can simultaneously be an ecological challenge, a cultural symbol, and a source of useful material."

Basic Soap Making with @earthechoesnc from 10-12pm is a class about making soap from scratch like your great-grandma may have done. You will be safely working with lye and oils, the process to begin all soap. You will get to customize the herbs and aromas you add to your soap bars!

This is followed by a Plant Walk with @bigelows_botanical_excursions from 2-4pm, where we will join the Joyful Botanist, Adam Bigelow, on a slow and gentle walk through the Red Moon Gardens, teaching about the local plants, their lore, ecological roles, and uses through stories and humor.
*In lieu of inclement weather, Adam will take students on a virtual walk through the season told with photographs, stories, and humor.

Learn more and sign up for these classes on our website under the tab "Events".

As the flowers grow tall and fall begins to settle into the mountains, we’re soaking up those last lingering summer feels. 🌿☀️

There’s still time to gather the last of summer’s harvest before the season fully turns. And as the days grow shorter, the plants begin drawing their energy back down into their roots, letting us know that root-harvesting season is just around the corner. 🌱

For now, we’re savoring the final flowers, golden afternoons, and the beautiful shift from one harvest season to the next. 🌼🍂

This October we are adding the fire to make the cauldron bubble and putting our beloved Red Moon Fire Cider on sale. 🔥

We love all of our products equally but our Fire Cider is one of our most popular and reached for products by staff and customers alike! It has a delicious garlicky base and the onion, horseradish, turmeric give it a flavorful depth, while the ginger and jalapeno peppers give it a dynamic spice. The sumac lends a fantastic vitamin c-like tartness, then it's topped off with local Haw Creek Honey, adding a gentle sweetness that heightens the flavor profile of the whole vinegar.

It is not only nourishing to our bodies, especially for the upcoming winter, but it also tastes phenomenal and makes a truly delicious marinade, salad dressing, soup addition, or pick-me-up shot!

We typically only offer this as a sale item once a year, so take advantage of it while supplies last! by @redmoonherbs

There are about nine different species of Echinacea native to North America, but we at Red Moon utilize Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia. We use both the root and the aerial parts of E. purpurea and the dried root of E. angustifolia to include the components of the whole plant in our Echinacea blend.

Echinacea is a coneflower and part of the Asteraceae family. The cone itself is actually a composite head built up of hundreds of tiny little flowers, each one a complete bloom, making what is commonly referred to as a single flower actually tons of very small flowers! It gets its name from the Greek word "echinos," meaning hedgehog, which refers to the spiky cone resembling a rolled-up hedgehog, which is adorable.

Echinacea, or purple coneflower, is a wonderful plant for landscaping, supporting pollinators, beautifying yards and prairies, and acting as a powerhouse for immune support. They are invaluable to our insects and wildlife. It's important to note that there are lots of hybrid versions of Echinacea, but not all of them will be beneficial for our wildlife or for making herbal preparations. It's important to speciate to know what echinacea to utilize herbally, but also because Echinacea is on the "At Risk" list and is important to harvest sustainably and ethically.

Growing and harvesting Echinacea purpurea is one of the better species to utilize, as it's commonly found in nurseries and is used as a landscape plant more often. A lot of our more wild species can be difficult to stumble upon due to habitat loss. When harvesting Echinacea we implore you to grow your own E. purpurea and steward your patch if you plan on harvesting. This helps take pressure off our wild Echinacea populations. We never overharvest wild populations of plants and purchase our E. angustifolia from organically farm-grown, reputable, and ethical sources. We grow an abundance of E. purpurea ourselves and harvest the flowering tops from our own garden and process the roots from our trusted, organically grown, local farmers.

Echinacea Blend is on sale until September 30! This is such a great ally to have on hand coming into the winter season. by @redmoonherbs

Two years ago today, WNC and Eastern Tennessee suffered unprecedented devastation. Hurricane Helene rolled in with fury and left a mark on most of our lives. The majority of us didn't expect it to be so bad; we assumed we would be without power for a day or so, and prepared enough food and water to last a couple of days. We couldn't anticipate being without power for weeks or more.

Looking back at old photographs and videos, it feels surreal. Viewing a video or a picture of something so monumentally unexpected and devastating is truly difficult to conceptualize when you aren't actively experiencing it. It feels difficult to accept that we were a part of such destruction. We experienced it, lived it, and remember it. It lives in our bodies. I feel a pull in my chest deep down to my stomach as I recall not knowing if friends and family were okay, lacking true understanding of what was happening around me. What was truth versus a game of telephone, and truly seeing the damage for the first time.

Yet through our disconnection, we found our way to one another and found a different way to connect. I remember the woman, whose name I never got, whom I had never met, driving around my neighborhood, hours after Helene came roaring through, stopping at each house to ask if we needed food, water, or life-saving medical supplies. I remember seeing friends and family, and never being more thankful in my life to embrace and hold them tightly. I remember community filled days at Red Moon Herbs with Appalachian Herb Collective, welcoming strangers with sympathetic eyes, an extended hand, a thankful smile, and sometimes a big hug. I remember the community, and the greater regional community, pulling together and acting and operating as one. I have never seen Appalachia so strong, rising out of destruction and pain. It was a beautiful sight to behold.

Today, I hope we let ourselves grieve, but I also hope we remember and appreciate just how impactful we are together. While tragedy and loss can bring connection, we can also achieve unity by reaching out to our friends and community today.

Happy Autumnal Equinox! 🍂

At the time of the Equinox and Solstice, we tend to look to plants for guidance, nurture, and restoration.
All of the mentioned plants are used in one product or another.

Calendula is a beloved plant in our products, we sell it dried, infuse it in oil for our Calendula Oil and Breast Massage Oil, and use it in an alcohol extract in blends such as Viral Spiral and Lymph Love.

Mugwort is used in our Zesty Three Sisters vinegar because it is a wonderful nutritive herb and extracts well in apple cider vinegar. This garlicky and nourishing vinegar is a great addition to salads, soups, and marinades.

Hawthorn is another plant we utilize in several products such as Hawthorn Complete (a blend of the berry, flower, and leaf), Heart Tonic, Menopause Tonic, and Hawthorn Berry Extract.

Rosehips are used to add a little tart Vitamin C to our Carolina Bitters blend. This blend is versatile for crafting a fun drink like a cocktail or mocktail, and serves as a digestive aid when you are feeling sluggish.

Goldenrod is used as an alcohol extract in our blends Breathe Light and Bladder Blend. Goldenrod can be such a beneficial aid in our respitory health and bladder health.
