I’ve been sitting on the print idea for so many years, I couldn’t find my very first sketch references. I had always loved the High Desert color palette of soft sage greens, vibrant yellows & oranges, lavenders and pinks, but something was missing… Until I happened to find some posts about Antelope being in this same area in the Eastern Sierra above Mono Lake. I had loads of Antelope photos from my trips to Wyoming, so… Yep! It was missing tiny Antelope butts all along! Ready for a first print after a very quick first carve! by @redtailstudios

When you are a one-woman show and you want to start your new linocut, but you are out of ‘Thank You’ tags… I let Dolly help me out today!

I make my own using my ‘clean off’ sheets - my block ghosts, roller excess and extra ink knife wipes make fun tags on lovely Rives BFK. How do you make yours? by @redtailstudios

Only one ‘Anticipation’ in the regular edition remains. 🙏 Thank you to all of you that have loved these birds! I haven’t mentioned yet, but the outstanding @woodsonart annual Birds In Art exhibit surprised me utterly by honoring ‘Anticipation’ with a poster this year! I was absolutely floored and delighted (of course)! If someone steals that last of the regular edition out from under you, please support the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum by purchasing a poster and/or visiting this most excellent of exhibits. #birdsinart2026 #posterbirds by @redtailstudios

This week is all about birds for me, as I bask in the excellence, warmth and beauty that the @woodsonart is famous for during Birds In Art.

Here’s another of my ‘early birds’ from 2014. “BUSHTIT’S NEST” began in one of my Live Oaks, just 50’ from the studio door, as a pair created their annual hanging masterpiece. The male was particularly suspicious of me and my sketchbook as I spent many hours in rapt attention, continually amazed at the flexibility and sturdiness of what appears to be random bits of forest fluff glued together with spider silk! The engineering skills they must have!

In the next few days, I’ll be posting ‘bird prints’ in honor of my 4th trip to the @woodsonart and the world’s preeminent avian exhibit Birds in Art (No. 51👏👏👏) in Wausau, WI.

“RED TAIL” was one of my very first reductions and was created in 2011 (!) fifteen years ago! This limited edition of 36 was always a favorite during Open Studio days - so many of us have a connection to Red-tailed Hawks. This 4-color, linocut reduction relief print used one plate for reduction printing, and a separate plate for the blind embossing.)

When we began building our home in the Sierras, a pair of nesting Red Tails kept us company for the first three years before a storm took out their tree. They became the inspiration for the studio name and this print. We feel as if our build was in some way given a blessing by their presence, despite the nail gun and screeching saw noises every day.

“Lembert & Tuolumne” is the twelfth and final print in the Yosemite Series; Each of the year’s 12 prints was completed within a one month period. I had set myself on a year-long challenge during YNP’s 125th year (and a Big One for me) that transformed my printmaking (described in detail in the first post revisiting the Series a month and a half ago).

I just returned from some high country paddle-boarding in a different but similarly beautiful area and it is really like nothing else. My happy place.

This unique landscape of tidy meadows, bisected by the meandering Tuolumne River and surrounded by granite peaks and domes reputedly inspired conservationist John Muir’s call for the creation of Yosemite National Park in 1890. In the relative cool alpine heights, the greenery and flowers stay long into Summer, the Tuolumne’s clear waters flow gently through the grasses, enticing visitors to soak their feet or dive in headlong for a refreshing end to the strenuous hiking of the High Country. Here, the river-rock beaches near the bridge leading to Parsons Lodge on the edge of the Meadow form a beautiful foreground to Lembert Dome in the distance.

All the prints in the Yosemite Series are 24” × 18” (61 x 46cm), printed on Arches Rives BFK, with Daniel Smith Relief Inks (Yep, that long ago) and pulled on my husband-built, beloved Red Tail Studio etching press (now being loved by a lovely intaglio artist in the Southern US). by @redtailstudios
