On 16 June 1976, the youth of Soweto didn’t wait for permission to demand their future. They stood — and the world was never the same. Fifty years later, I pick up a camera and ask myself the same question they were asking: who decides which stories get told? As a filmmaker rooted in African Cine-Culture, I’ve come to understand that storytelling is not just an art form — it is an economic act, a cultural act, a political act. Every frame I shoot is a decision that a story on this continent is worth telling. That the people in it are worth seeing. That our voices carry weight in rooms we haven’t even entered yet. This Youth Day, I’m not just commemorating history. I’m choosing to carry it forward — through the work, through the craft, through every story I commit to telling with intention and excellence. In 1976, Hector Pieterson was 12 years old. Hastings Ndlovu was 15. They didn’t die asking for luxury. They died asking for the right to belong to their own country. To learn in their own language. To dream on their own terms. Fifty years later, I stood inside Dinokeng Game Reserve. A Big 5 reserve. In my township. In Hammanskraal. The place I grew up in. And most of us didn’t even know it existed. I was chosen to be part of the ITFFA Young Creative Student Challenge. I held a professional Nikon camera. I shot wildlife. I learned from industry veterans. I shared space with incredibly talented young creatives. And the entire time, one thought never left me. This should not feel like a privilege. But it does. A game reserve sits in the heart of Hammanskraal, and the young people of Hammanskraal have never seen it. Not because it is far. Not because they don’t care. But because nobody told them they were allowed. That is not just irony. That is fifty years of unfinished business. Experiencing your country should not be a privilege. It should be a birthright. Holding a camera and telling your story should not be a privilege. It should be a birthright. Dreaming, and actually seeing that dream happen in real time, should be a birthright. I was one of the chosen few. But I dream of a South Africa where no young person has to feel chosen, because every single one of them already belongs. The youth is not just the future. It's been almost a week since our International Tourism Film Festival Africa wins, and honestly? We're still sitting in it. We receive every single win with open arms, with gratitude, and with deep humility. On Friday night, Reel Stories walked away with three ITFFA awards which Nidha Narrandes collected on behalf of the team. Two gold awards for content we created with @lovecapetown for the My Cape Town Campaign. This one belongs to a team that gave everything. Rhoda Davids, whose mind dreamed it into existence. @clintondeantravels who held the beautiful chaos together. Maxine February who shot every single frame handheld - and if you know anything about filmmaking, you know what that means. The skill, the stamina, the sensitivity it takes to carry a story that way. It was absolutely the right choice. And @_auntyjanine whose editing didn't just cut footage - it shaped feeling. She turned visuals into something that means something. We also took home a Silver Award for Green Noise, a series produced for CapeNature - this one lives very close to our hearts. What you didn't see: We shot all 8 episodes in a single day. One day. And in that one day, we experienced all four seasons. Loren Pavitt had the incredible vision to shoot at the top of the Hottentots Hollands Mountain and the framing was breathtaking. Then the clouds came. Then a bit of rain. Fog. Then the wind. We stayed. We sheltered the equipment through the heat and the rain. We kept going. Our sound engineer Ethan Tait battled the howling wind for every clean second of audio, and he won. You'd never hear the struggle in the final cut. That's the magic that most people never see. That's what production really is. It's not glamour, it's problem-solving in real time, in every condition, with grace and grit. It's after-hours revisions and re-edits and reimagining. It's the Reel Stories team that never complains, never quits, and keeps going until the work is right. Until it's worthy. Wow, what a week! We would like to thank carolineungersbock and James for an incredible @_itffa event. Thank you to all the wonderful minds we met, and of course, thank you and well done to the core team of “Bucket: The Lion Cub “ Directors : Jana Muller & Bryan Joubert. From scholarship student to storyteller, mentor, and now employer of emerging talent. 🎥🌍 This trailer for our upcoming "OH THE PEOPLE YOU MEET with Michaela Guzy in Africa's Eden" (Zambia and Zimbabwe) episode was filmed by promising young filmmakers in Zambia whose talent, passion, and perspective moved me deeply. What we captured together was so powerful that I personally funded the editing of this trailer, hiring a talented South African editor to help bring the story to life. Now, I'm looking to raise finishing funds for the full episode—not only to complete the project, but to continue investing in African creative talent by hiring more African editors for this episode and future productions. These real stories deserve to be told and through our global distribution network, we can shine a light on these inspiring stories. I've always believed regenerative travel is about more than protecting places. It's about creating opportunities for people, building careers, and ensuring local voices are helping tell local stories. We’re in Johannesburg this week attending the International Tourism Film Festival Africa ahead of Friday evening’s awards ceremony. As part of the festival programme, we were invited to present on storytelling within our sectors - tourism and conservation. Our topic was “Everyone Has a Story”, where we explored how identifying the right story, understanding what it needs to achieve, and then building a campaign around it are all essential to ensuring a story and a film has the intended impact and resonates with its audience. In collaboration with our partners, we’re also proud to have five films as finalists in the awards this year. It’s an honour to see these stories recognised, and we’re looking forward to celebrating alongside fellow filmmakers and storytellers on Friday night. Stay tuned for more updates.
