🔥 Book Review — Rising 🔥

I dove into this book very intrigued because I had actually never read a dystopian book with zombies before! So the combination of magic and zombies made me very excited to listen to the audiobook for this book.

Rising is set in a post-apocalyptic USA. Following radiation exposure, humans either acquire elemental magic, or become zombies. I really enjoyed the world-building, action, plot twists and, believe it or not, I am enjoying the slow-burn!

The main character, Amaia, is a fierce character who is the general of The Compound, a community based on Monterey, California. She fearlessly protects her community, and takes care of her chosen family. Although I did not agree with all decisions made by Amaia, you cannot deny her resilence and how much she loves her chosen family. She is loyal, and fights for those she loves.

As for the audiobook, this book is narrated by Ruthie Bowles, who does a fantastic job at narrating all POVs. I really enjoyed the effort made in giving each POV a distinct feel to it. I also really enjoyed the bonus content from the audiobook which I felt provided really good context to the story. I actually read and listened to the audiobook at the same time, and I found it was a phenomenal immersive experience.

The State of the Union Series is a very promising series for me and I am very looking forward to reading book 2!
