I’ve visited 40 countries. Mostly alone. And I’ve seen things that don’t make it into anyone’s travel guides.

Animal cruelty. Ecosystems and traditions quietly dying. An industry that profits from places it’s slowly destroying.

Rolling Grace was never just about the food or the hotels. It was always about telling the truth about the places we travel to, the things we eat, and the world we’re leaving behind.

If you’ve been here a while, thank you for staying. If you’re new, you found the right place. Rolling Grace is just getting started.

Hand-rolled cigarette in Perlis. 🇲🇾

Daun rokok is taken from the nipah palm, a mangrove species that regrows after harvesting and requires no clearing or replanting. The leaves are sun-dried and used directly, without chemical treatment or processing.

The tobacco is tembakau Jawa timbang, loose Javanese tobacco sold by weight, reflecting older trade systems across the Malay Archipelago before factory packaging and branding.

No paper. No filter. No additives.
A practice shaped by landscape, availability, and inherited know-how, still alive in northern Malaysia today. #RollingGrace

A mosque that looks like a temple. Arabic calligraphy written top to bottom like Chinese characters. Islam practised here for over 1,200 years, longer than in most of Europe, and almost nobody talks about it.

The Great Mosque of Xi’an completely shifted the way I think about Islam, China, and how much of the world’s history we’ve quietly been told to ignore.

Save this for your next China trip.

If you love animals, watch until the end! 🐱

Bon Ton in Langkawi is the kind of place that ruins regular hotels for you. There’s a story behind every villa, an animal in every corner, and satisfaction of knowing your stay directly supports the welfare and rehabilitation of rescued animals. Full article via link in bio.

For centuries, the Bajau Laut never needed land. They were born, married, and buried on the water.

Today, most of them no longer live at sea. Their houseboats have aged beyond repair, fish stocks have collapsed from overfishing and climate change, and the modern world has slowly pulled them ashore. The ones who have settled on stilts in places like Mabul and Semporna now live in legal limbo, classified as illegal squatters by the very country their ancestors called home before Malaysia even existed.

Without citizenship, their children cannot enrol in public school, their sick cannot walk into a government hospital, and their adults cannot legally work. The sea no longer feeds them, and the land does not want them.

Klang has this bakery called Bakery Cake House where the name on the front has been fading from the sun for so long that you almost walk past it, but you step in and Uncle Goh is doing the same thing he’s been doing since 1978, Auntie Wee is at the front, the butter cakes are fresh out of the oven, and nothing about it has changed except the year.

The Haenyeo of Jeju are one of the last matriarchal diving communities on earth, and the world is about to lose them in our lifetime. Save this. Share this. The least we can do is make sure they’re remembered.

Zero plastic because the earth already designed the perfect packaging material. 🌍

A glass bottle packed in dried straws and tied with string made it through shipping without a single crack, which means every business still defaulting to bubble wrap and plastic foam now has to sit with the fact that their excuse was never really about protecting the product.

It was about convenience, and convenience has been costing the planet in ways that a bundle of straw and a piece of string never will.

Sustainable packaging is not a future consideration or a brand positioning exercise, it is dried straw, it is string, it is a decision that has been available to every business for as long as fields have been growing and bottles have needed wrapping. The materials were never the problem. You are. 😜

Thank you @clubbintangbarkath for setting the perfect example 💚

I went on a sunset river cruise in Teluk Intan and watched 50,000 birds fly home in formation across Sungai Perak.

If you’re someone who travels for nature over five-star hotels, this is your sign to plan that road trip up north. Teluk Intan is so much more than the Leaning Tower.

📍 Nat Pokok Getah, Arau, Perlis

A morning market held under rubber trees. Open only on Fridays and Sundays, 7am to 1pm.

Breakfast for two under RM20, locally roasted kopi timbang sold by the gram, and an experience you simply won’t find in KL.

Note: this video was filmed back in 2019. I no longer eat meat now, and I don’t encourage it either. 🐮🩷
