The Kumari or Living Goddess of Nepal is a prepubescent girl from the Newar community, worshipped as a manifestation of divine female energy. Selected through a rigorous process based on specific physical and psychological traits, the Kumari is believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Taleju. She resides in the Kumari Ghar in Kathmandu’s Durbar Square and appears publicly only during certain ceremonies. The tradition, dating back to the 17th century, lasts until the Kumari reaches puberty, after which a new Kumari is chosen. Coffee here doesn’t begin with machines or cafés. In Manggarai, Flores, it starts with handpicked cherries, split open, then left to dry slowly under the sun. Flores is not just a detour. Its beaches and islands are part of a fragile marine ecosystem shaped by strong currents, volcanic coastlines, and long established fishing communities. Coral reefs here support turtles, reef fish, and migratory species, while islands like Kanawa, Riung, and Koka remain largely undeveloped compared to other parts of Indonesia.Now that Flores is opening more visibly to tourism, I hope the government continues to protect its oceans with clear marine zoning, strict waste management, and limits on unchecked development. These waters do not need more attention.
