Two weeks out! Who’s coming with us?! The Downieville Classic, presented by @santacruzbicycles, celebrates its 28th running this year, and it’s gonna be a banger. The party starts on Thursday with @yubaexpeditions pre-ride shuttles up to Packer Saddle all day, and an evening dance party with @djcoopdaloop. More shuttles Friday, then the @freehubmag Presents Film Festival at the historic Yuba Theatre, featuring @dain_zaffke’s powerful “I Have It All” film, partially shot in Downieville, as he returned to racing in 2025 after losing a lung to cancer. Racing kicks off early Saturday morning in Sierra City, followed by an epic evening of entertainment: the River Jump, Log Pull and @joyandmadness on the main stage. On Sunday, racers vie for all-mountain excellence by surviving 15 miles and 5,000 feet of vert on the famous Downieville Downhill (riding the same bike used in Saturday's XC race, to boot). There is truly nothing else like it on the calendar! The best part? All proceeds benefit the work of the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship to maintain the Downieville Trail Network, something we've been doing for three decades. Year 28 loading … Six weeks until the party starts once again in Downieville for a full weekend of bucket-list racing on the Sierra Crest, followed by semi-organized anarchy throughout town, including the raucous river jump and log pull, and live funk music and dancing Saturday night from the eight-piece @joyandmadness. It’s quite possible that Tobin Ortenblad, AKA @mctubbbin, knows Lost and Found better than any other rider out there—he’s been coming to the race whenever his schedule allows since we started it in 2014, and has even helped us design the course in the past (sorry about all that climbing!). And even though he can’t make this year’s race, we had a chance to chat with him about what makes the race so special. Thank you to everyone who joined us this past weekend in Quincy for our first volunteer epic of 2026! We had an awesome turnout, with 45 volunteers pitching in on Saturday on Mt. Hough. Together, we planted 550 trees on the top of Mt. Hough near the summit (huge shout out to W.M. Beaty and Associates and @calfire for donating 550 seedlings for this work, as well as the Dixie Fire Canopy Project, @featherriverrcd and Plumas National Forest for their support), completed finish work on about half-mile of new trail on the new connector between Acorn Grotto and the Clear Creek Trails, and a small moto group did some solid tread repair on Indian Falls Ridge 2 just below the “fins.” Volunteers play a huge role in helping us make #dirtmagic every year, and we’re grateful to all who chipped in! More course recon reports are coming in from this week, and the resounding feedback is: Best courses ever! Yes, we are just slightly biased, but the new courses are serving! Roads are smoother (shout out to the Plumas National Forest road crew for working on Crocker this week), climbs are evenly dispersed, there is way less chunk, views are more scenic than ever with our ability to incorporate the forest road on the west side of Lake Davis for the first time, and the best part: There’s more dirt! By changing up the finish, we were able to cut out the final pavement stretch back into Portola (and its inevitable headwind), and significantly increase the dirt-to-pavement ratio for all three courses. The amount of dirt doubles this year on the 40-mile Half Calf course 😳Come on out to Portola on June 13 & stay for the whole weekend…it’s gonna be a banger! Pre-riding? Log out work this week on the Empire Creek trail in Dowieville! The trail crew is close to clearing the whole trail, and both Empire and Chimney Rock should be fully logged out and ready to roll by next week. Thanks for the work Josh & Henry!

This year we’re excited to include a 2.4-mile section of the Lake Davis Trail into all three Lost & Found courses, adding singletrack to the routes for the first time. This mellow, mostly smooth trail is perfect for drop bars—it winds through the woods at a nearly flat grade and is wide enough to pass (always let the rider in front of you know you’re passing). If you’ve joined the Friday Shakeout Ride in the past few years, you’ll recognize it! If not—head up to Lake Davis for the Shakeout Ride this year on Friday June 12 to check it out before race day! The non-motorized, beginner-friendly 7-mile Lake Davis Trail was built by race organizer Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship in partnership with the Beckwourth District of the Plumas National Forest over many years, and with contributions from hundreds of volunteers, incorporating techniques such as turnpikes and boardwalks to prevent standing water during the wet season and promote longterm trail sustainability. Its beautiful lake views and beginner-friendly status make it a real gem and we’re thrilled to showcase it in this year’s race on Saturday, June 13. Participating in races like Lost & Found helps us keep doing this kind of work, as all proceeds from the race benefit the Stewardship. Your race entry=support for trails!
