Two weeks out! Who’s coming with us?! The Downieville Classic, presented by @santacruzbicycles, celebrates its 28th running this year, and it’s gonna be a banger. The party starts on Thursday with @yubaexpeditions pre-ride shuttles up to Packer Saddle all day, and an evening dance party with @djcoopdaloop. More shuttles Friday, then the @freehubmag Presents Film Festival at the historic Yuba Theatre, featuring @dain_zaffke’s powerful “I Have It All” film, partially shot in Downieville, as he returned to racing in 2025 after losing a lung to cancer. Racing kicks off early Saturday morning in Sierra City, followed by an epic evening of entertainment: the River Jump, Log Pull and @joyandmadness on the main stage. On Sunday, racers vie for all-mountain excellence by surviving 15 miles and 5,000 feet of vert on the famous Downieville Downhill (riding the same bike used in Saturday's XC race, to boot).

There is truly nothing else like it on the calendar! The best part? All proceeds benefit the work of the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship to maintain the Downieville Trail Network, something we've been doing for three decades. Racing slots are still available for the XC and All Mountain races, and online registration is open until Monday, August 3rd. Details at downievilleclassic.com. We’ll see you in the mountains! Big news for the Beckwourth Peak project: We are finally on the homestretch! @sierranevadaconservancy has awarded SBTS $54,515 in additional grant funds specifically to finish the final mile of the Beckwourth Peak Trail. The SBTS Pro Trail Crew will be back out there this summer and fall to close the loop, which will create a 13-mile non-motorized singletrack trail from Portola City Park around the Peak. The genesis of this project dates back to 2009 and has included a lot of support over the years from several partners, including the City of Portola, the U.S. Forest Service and a lot of volunteers!

The final mile has been extremely difficult to build—Beckwourth Peak is a volcanic formation and even though the last section to construct has minimal bedrock to bench through, it could be hiding just inches under the dirt, which we won't discover until we start digging. There are also several scree fields to build through that have contained large rock that will have to be split and stacked to construct the tread, two ravine crossings to build through where we are sure to hit bedrock and will also require dry stack retaining walls with natural stone on site. Building was stalled while we sought funds to complete the last mile, and with that part of the equation solved now, we are excited to get back out there to finish!

Stay tuned here for project updates and volunteer opportunities, as we will need your help along the way! by @sierratrails

HUGE thank to our small but mighty crew of volunteers who joined us for last weekend's Trail Daze event in the Lakes Basin. Volunteers spent the day brushing on the east side of Grass Lake up in the Basin, and enjoyed a beautiful day up in the mountains. Our volunteer days go a long way in meeting the matching requirements for the grants that fund much of our work, and we greatly appreciate everyone who showed up to give us a hand! We are very happy to announce Alex Bordewyk as the winner of this year's 5 Bucks a Foot Gravel Fundraiser! Alex has been donating to our 5 Bucks a Foot campaigns since 2023, and he's never even been to the Lost Sierra! The Denver resident and bikepack-enthusiast is a supporter of SBTS' trail work from afar (and hopes to visit soon). For him, donating to a cause that benefits the trails, if even they're far from home, is a worthy investment.

"The thought of winning a new bike is always a good motivator," he says. "I love all the work being done in Colorado and it's cool to see what's happening [in the Lost Sierra] as well. I just can't believe it happened."

And now? He has a dream custom-outfitted Evil Bikes Chamois Hagar for a dream trip. "I've done a couple overnighters, and I'm hoping to do a bigger four-night trip this fall over birthday—now I’ll have a great bike for it. "

Thank you to Alex and everyone who donated to this campaign and helped us raise nearly $26,000 for trail building and maintenance in northern California and western Nevada. And especially to our partners, who made this campaign and so many others, possible: @evilbicycles, @patagonia_mtb, @paulcomponent, @shimanomtb, @ridefoxbike, @whiteind, and @wildernesstrailbikes, as well as @astralcycling, @loam_equipment, and @camp.and.go.slow. We couldn't do it without you! by @sierratrails

New Mt. Hough maps are here! We’ve talked a lot about all the new trails on Mt. Hough, and now you can see it all for yourself on the new paper maps. On the heels of officially completing the 10-year Mt. Hough project—in partnership with Plumas County and the Plumas National Forest—in which the SBTS Pro Trail Crew built some 70 miles of singletrack on Mt. Hough in Quincy, we produced updated maps so you can plan your next ride or hike and see how all the new trails link up. You'll also find a map of the Hough-adjacent non-motorized South Park trail system You can find the map at yubaexpeditions.com, or stop into the shop in Quincy to purchase. Proceeds support the trails! by @sierratrails
