đŸ’ȘTechnique strength & conditioning for dancers

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Every clean à la seconde turn starts before the rotation.

Step 1ïžâƒŁ Control the plié. It’s your foundation. Rotate into it with alignment through the hip and spine.
Step 2ïžâƒŁ Push into a strong relevé. Lift from underneath the body, not just the heel.
Step 3ïžâƒŁ Then add the turn. Stacked, supported, and intentional (with a sharp spot, of course!)

At Refine & Align, we slow it down to focus on the control each piece takes and address pain points layer by layer. When dancers move with that kind of awareness, they build strength, precision, and confidence that can’t be faked.

When we’re drilling, it’s not about how aesthetic we can look as a group (although that does scratch my former dance teacher itch), it’s about each dancer learning to feel and control every piece of the movement. That’s where real artistry comes from. The aesthetics will follow. đŸ’«

✹ Hi, I’m Cyndi! ✹

As the Founder & Director of Refine & Align: Functional Fitness for Dancers, my mission is to help dancers build strength, resilience, and longevity in their craft. Refine & Align is designed to bridge the gap between dance and functional fitness, focusing on strength, conditioning, injury prevention, and education to support dancers in performing at their highest level—both physically and mentally.

Functional fitness is the key to unlocking a dancer’s full potential. Strength, endurance, and injury prevention work outside the studio enhance power, stability, and control, allowing dancers to execute movements with greater precision, reduce fatigue, and prevent overuse injuries. My goal is to provide the missing piece that helps dancers move smarter, train stronger, and perform longer.

With a background as a former dancer trained in multiple genres, I spent several years teaching dance before expanding my focus to fitness and wellness. I am a Certified Health Coach and hold certifications in barre, Pilates and Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT). My expertise includes group and one-on-one fitness programming, as well as over a decade of weightlifting education and experience, which has shaped my approach to building strong, balanced bodies.

I’m also Co-CEO of Barre Forte and Co-Owner & Instructor at Barre Forte Kaysville, where I continue to help individuals move with strength, confidence, and purpose.

Let’s elevate the way we train and move! đŸ’Ș✹ #RefineandAlign #BarreForte #StrongandGraceful #dance #strengthandconditioning #fitness taken in Barre Forte Kaysville by @refineandalign

Refine & Align is functional fitness for dancers built on 4 key pillars: strength, conditioning, injury prevention, and education.

Dancers need to be treated like the athletes they really are and we’re here to fill that void. đŸ’Ș

Now accepting new dance studio partnerships and dancers for group and 1:1 training. Our first clinic is already full (say what?!), but complete the registration form at the link in bio to be added to the waitlist. Who knows, we may even add a second November clinic for overflow if there’s enough interest! đŸ€

We look forward to working with Davis County’s dance community.

New space. New season. Same strong crew! đŸ’Ș

I had the opportunity to start working with these dancers earlier this summer, and I’m so excited to be back with them as they kick off a new season in their beautiful new studio space.

There’s something special about returning to a group you’ve already started building a relationship with: getting to pick up where we left off, continue developing their strength and conditioning, and watch their progress throughout the season.

So grateful to be part of their journey and to work alongside studios that recognize the value of investing in their dancers beyond traditional dance training.

Here’s to a new space, new goals, and another season of getting stronger together! â™„ïžđŸ–€

Everybody wants the results.

The stronger technique, cleaner turns, higher jumps, challenging choreo.

But those things aren’t built by wanting them more, they’re built in the extra work you choose to put in and, more importantly, the consistency with which you do it.

One strength session won’t transform your dancing, one mobility session won’t suddenly change your range, and one day of working on a weakness won’t make it disappear.

But week after week? Month after month? That work adds up.

Going the extra mile doesn’t mean running yourself into the ground or training every spare second you have. It means being intentional about the work you’re doing, addressing the things that need attention, and continuing to show up even when progress isn’t immediately obvious.

Let’s talk about something that has nothing to do with how high you can jump, how many turns you can do, or how flexible you are.

How you behave in class matters.

Talking while someone is teaching. Not paying attention. Distracting the dancers around you. Checking out when it isn’t your turn. Rolling your eyes at a correction. Making everything a joke.

Those things might seem small, but they affect the entire room. Your teachers are giving you their time and knowledge. Your teammates are there to learn and work. Everyone deserves an environment where they can focus.

And no, this doesn’t mean dance class shouldn’t be FUN. Laugh. Make friends. Hype each other up. Enjoy being there.

But part of becoming a mature dancer is learning when it’s time to have fun and when it’s time to lock in.

“The harder the choreography gets, the more your foundation matters.

When you’re turning, jumping, changing direction, balancing, or trying to hold onto your technique while you’re tired, your body relies on the strength, stability, control, and coordination you’ve built underneath it all. That’s why we train the basics.

Not because every exercise looks impressive or because it looks like something you’d do onstage, but because when your dancing asks more of you, your body needs to be ready to answer.

Technique is a whole lot easier when you’re fresh.

But what happens halfway through a demanding routine? At the end of a long rehearsal? During the final section of your competition piece?

Fatigue sets in and that’s often when technique starts to fall apart. Your knees get softer. Your alignment changes. Your landings get heavier. Your control starts to disappear.

That’s why dancers need more than the ability to execute a skill. They need the physical capacity to keep executing it well when they’re tired.

It isn’t just about getting through the routine, it’s about helping your technique hold up from the first count to the last.

We spend a lot of time asking for MORE from our dancing.

More power, control, stamina, precision, expression - the list goes on.

But your body is the thing creating all of it and that’s why cross-training matters.

The goal isn’t to replace your dance training. It’s to build the physical capacity that supports everything you’re already working toward on the floor.

You train the choreography. You train the technique. Don’t forget to train the dancer!

Why does your dance teacher keep telling you to straighten your knees?

Because that little detail can change the entire look of a movement.

Fully extending the knee when the choreography calls for it helps create longer, cleaner leg lines and more defined shapes. It also requires control all the way through the leg instead of simply placing the foot and hoping for the best.

A bent knee where you want a straight one can make a movement look unfinished. A strong, intentional leg line can make the exact same movement look sharper, cleaner, and more polished.

Straight knees aren’t the goal in every movement, but when the technique calls for one, you want the strength and control to actually create it.

You can understand a correction perfectly and still struggle to make it happen.

Technique tells you what you’re asking your body to do. Your body still needs the physical tools to execute it:

- Strength to support the position
- Mobility to access it
- Control to own it
- Capacity to repeat it

Enter: cross-training. We’re not replacing technique training, we’re building the physical foundation that helps you actually use it.

Technique gives you the blueprint. Your body still has to build it.

Some studio culture icks need to be called out.

Dance studios should be places where dancers are challenged, pushed to grow, held to high standards and still feel respected, supported, fueled, and included.

đŸ’„ You can be competitive without tearing someone else down.
đŸ’„ You can give corrections without humiliating someone.
đŸ’„ You can have favorites without creating an “inner circle.”
đŸ’„ You can want to win AND cheer for the dancer standing next to you.

And adults? We’re responsible for setting the tone. If we don’t want mean-girl behavior, cliques, body talk, gossip, and comparison among dancers, we can’t model it for them.

Sure, talent is impressive, trophies are exciting, and technique matters, but the culture we create and the kind of humans we’re helping shape matter a whole lot more.
