Everyday since July 9, 2022 (when I blew everything up ✌🏾) the vision for my life has become more defined. What is my work? What is my sweet spot? What have I had all along that I may not have given credit to?

And that’s community! I live a completely different life because of it. Others have engaged in programs I’ve curated and used the information and urging to change their own. I’m talking about new jobs, side hustles but more importantly peace of mind!

“I was paying rent on my past life.”

Whew!! How many of us are doing the same? 👀 Holding on to old versions of ourselves, things we’ve built, and chapters we’ve outgrown while trying to figure out what’s NEXT?

But what if the NEXT chapter doesn’t need to start right away? What if you need to make room for it first?

Lately, every time I’m on this app I’m bombarded with messages about what I should be angry about. What I can’t have. What’s unjust and unfair.

It doesn’t feel like joy or hope has a place here but I wake up with it every day. And each day I’m planting seeds to make things happen despite the odds, the laws, and divisiveness.

Guess what? The harvest is coming too. And I have capacity for the deep gratitude that comes with the journey.

I believe hope is the pathway to liberation, not negativity. Be careful to what you’re consuming because it starts to stick. Remember…

Waiting for the yes is even worse than rejection.

There’s a difficult space between what you’ve asked for and when it finally arrives.

It’s where the nights get long, doubt gets loud, and you start wondering if you should change the dream altogether.

This is a reminder to do whatever it takes to wait in expectation.

Your work just doesn’t have receipts yet.

You see the life you want while scrolling on your feed.

It feels like so many others have the opportunities.
The business.
The freedom.
The rooms you want to be in.

But do you know what it took to build it?

The years nobody saw.
The money invested before there was a return.
The rejection.
The scrutiny.
The uncomfortable decisions.
Did I say the rejection?

Remember, we may see the result. We rarely see the road that got them there.

It’s okay NOT to be okay. 🤍

And that might be harder to recognize when the newsroom taught you that everything you’re experiencing is just part of the job.

The long hours. The constant deadlines. The pressure to perform no matter what’s happening in your personal life. The stories you carry home with you. The burnout you learn to push through. The fear that comes with all of the uncertainty.

We normalize so much that sometimes we don’t realize how much the work is affecting us.

When Diana Alvear joined us for The NEXT Best Thing’s What It Really Takes to Build a Career in Communications workshop, she talked candidly about what happened when she left news the first time.

She was so burned out that she didn’t have much left in the tank to start something new. She eventually realized she had a lot to work through before she could show up fully in a new career. And at the Rewrite, we see that in soooo many of you.

Diana’s advice? Take care of your mental health BEFORE you bring all of that unresolved baggage into your NEXT chapter. It will affect your ability to show up for new opportunities.

This is the quiet part that we don’t say out loud.

Your skills can come with you.
Your experience can come with you.
Your voice can come with you.

But you must leave the damage behind.

Well… I’m back behind the mic. 🎙️

It’s been five months since I last published an episode of The NEXT Best Thing Podcast, and honestly, I NEEDED the time away.

Your experience isn’t the problem. Your story is.

Certified interview coach Lili Foggle says employers want to know what you can do NOW, not just what you’ve done in the past.

So don’t just list your experiences. Tell the story demonstrating how you think, solve problems, make decisions and navigate people.

That’s what makes your experience relevant to what’s NEXT in a fast changing workforce.

You might roll your eyes at the idea of a “money mindset.”

💰 But money affects most of the decisions you make.
How long you can wait.
💰 What opportunities you consider.
💰 What you’re willing to negotiate for or if you negotiate at all.
💰 Whether you see a setback as a dead end or start looking for another path.

And when money feels uncertain, it’s easy to confuse protecting yourself with limiting yourself.

🙋🏾‍♀️ Most people can’t afford to go 6 months without a paycheck. That means if you’re looking for work you have to monetize your expertise WHILE looking for full time employment.

Money is a tool that buys you time. And you don’t need to be offered a salary with benefits, to get money in the door.

There are also a lot quicker and more lucrative ways to make money than trying to become an influencer when you’re out of work and the bills are due.

When you’re desperate you lose all leverage and negotiating power. So be very clear about your financial situation right now, and allow that to determine how to prioritize your NEXT step.

At The Rewrite/The NEXT Best Thing, we don’t think you can have an honest conversation about navigating today’s workforce without talking about money. And if it makes you uncomfortable…well that’s the point.
