Lemons into lemonade. We were three days into our stay in Glasgow. The rain and grey skies hadn’t relented for close to a week. It was the start of Summer, but temps hadn’t risen above 12 degrees. In the four years since I began working on projects with @rob_britton, I’d seen him routinely check off goal after goal with little fuss or fanfare. But here we were, two FKTs completed and one remaining, and he hadn’t been able to add another record to his growing list.Sure, he could have gone into his shell, attributed it to unlucky mechanicals, harsh weather, or quietly whispered: “I am getting too old for this.” But instead, he was still methodically planning his pace and calorie needs, and dialling in his bike for the next morning’s 4am start. The thing about these FKTs is that there is rarely a crowd to greet you. It usually results in a late-night finish with a cold pizza and beer. The joy has to be internal, and the rider's motivation comes from a drive most can’t wrap their heads around. And that's where Rob truly excels. by @rob_britton

Here’s a little insight into the numbers behind my UK FKT challenge. A little over a week after getting home -I’m still pretty tired. The physical side of things is something I’m pretty accustom to by this point but the mental fatigue has been slow to dissolve. Thankfully Victoria is a pretty sweet spot for some much earned R&R. THE NUMBERS 3 diffent FKTs across the UK. Roughly 14h ea. 45h 7 days. Monday KAW // Wednesday PBW // Sunday 🦡Div. Just shy of 35000 kjs1000kmAbout 900gates 2-3 refuel stops ea 1 FULL bag of @firstendurance lemon hi carb mixRoughly 35 gels/ liquid shots (fe, enervit Mango+ sodium)15-20 various bars and chews - @thefeed To plug the holes In between - probably 4 pizzas, 3 burgers, 1 fish & chips aaaand after KAW more than a couple beers too. 📸 @stirlandraemediahaus by @rob_britton

Method to the madness. What most people skip with @rob_britton is the meticulous planning, scouting, scanning over maps, tire choices, layer choices, how much nutrition is needed, when the headlamp needs to go on, the juggling of battery life of half a dozen gadgets, will resupply be open when I pass by, etc, etc…..It's all quite exhausting to watch from afar, and this is before the actual pedalling even begins. Before the fitness is in place, flights and accommodation are booked; there are the logistics of these goals. Rob might just be the master of this skill set as he takes it all in his stride, despite the heavy fatigue that comes with the goal itself. by @rob_britton

The face of a man who looks like he's seen a ghost. This is how deep Rob Britton went searching for his 3 FKT attempts on his recent week long trip to the UK. He took on King Alfreds way, the Pennine Bridleway, and finally the Badger Divide. What I loved about this conversation was Rob's honesty and openness around this FKT attempt. Thing's don't always go as planned and that is the nature of these beasts but what is more important are the lessons you learn from them and the stories you can share with others. The Art Of Suffering. When @rob_britton came to me with the idea of attempting to set three 300km plus FKTs in the UK in a week, I didn't give it much thought as at this stage, I have simply normalized his version of limitations. The continued drive to push his body and mind to the brink is exhausting from afar, but he has a way of making the process look nonchalant. In a year that has seen more ebbs than flows (his words), he still finds a way to pick himself up and get to the start line.Film coming in the Fall. by @rob_britton

I’m pretty tired, I think I’ll go home now. Honestly I can’t believe it’s been two weeks since I got to the UK. The project I had set out was to take on (and ideally successfully complete)3FKT rides across the entire island. Starting in the south with King Alfred‘s Way, taking a day off to travel to the middle of the country and close to where I raced bikes in 2013 the next challenge was the Pennine bridalway. Lastly I would head north to Scotland, the final challenge being a route called the Badger divide stretching from Glasgow north to Inverness. These challenges are always interesting- foreign country, riding blind, also 3x300+ km efforts in 7 days would be a new thing. In the end o would go 1/3. KAW- ❎too slowPBW- 🚫DNF🥶🦡Divide- 🤴🏼I will share the numbers in another post but the gist is this. KAW- was looking great until a major puncture cost me everything. Seven plugs later and stopping probably 3–4 times to re-plug and reinflate saw me watch a new FKT slipped through my fingers. The Pennine… a stunning route that’s absolutely cursed with gate crossings. Not 20 or 30 but hundreds of gates. I honestly didn’t think it was possible for there to be that many, in the end though it was being unprepared that cost me, with heavy rain and extreme winds up high I was nowhere near prepared for the 8° temperatures in my skin suit and shake dry jacket. I remember realizing at the moment I was getting hypothermia and just how f@cked I was. I have never been so grateful to see Matt in my life. Stopping was no longer a disappointment it was self preservation and I don’t regret that for a secondFinally-The badger gave me what I had been searching for. Not success in setting a new FKT but more so relief that even won everything seems to be going wrong I could still get past it and put together a good day.😮‍💨Right now sitting in the Heathrow airport I am exhausted. Mentally and physically. This challenge mike so many others made me earn every single inch but this year with how everything is gone that little taste of success in the end was so sweet.Film to follow later this fall. Thanks @stirlandraemediahaus for capturing the highs AND lows. by @rob_britton

Here we go. I’ve had this on the calendar since probably January of this year but save for a very few people kept it to myself. As the season played out I was definitely debating whether or not this was a good idea but after a hard reset post UNBOUND I’m feeling really good about this whole project. Excited even 🙂. One week, three different FKT efforts Across all of the UK. Today starts with King Alfred’s Way, Wednesday I take on a pretty unknown route to most called the pennine bridalway then on Sunday to round the week off I will finish with the badger divide up in Scotland beginning in Glasgow and finishing in Inverness. Genuinely excited to be here and doing what I love. The last few weeks at home was exactly what I needed. Family, friends, a few beers, dogs and qt on the bike. Back to the basics. Ok- let’s get this party started. Wish me luck. 🫡 by @rob_britton

@thediv_ide - this was exactly what I needed after UNBOUND. On so many levels this was the opposite of a bike race, thank you so much to everyone who came out and supported this event in its first year. This was I wanted to share with people when Jared and I talked about bringing this event to life about a year ago. No finish lines, no results, just an awesome weekend of good people, great food and everything else that goes around a fun day of gravel riding in the Canadian Rockies. I just couldn’t help but smile the whole weekend, I’ve spent most of my adult life racing bikes but at the end of the day what I truly love is just going for a ride. After a week off post UNBOUND this was exactly the recovery I needed. Body recovered and more importantly mind cleared I can’t wait to get back to my regular schedule program. Massive thank you to everyone who trusted us to deliver on this first attempt and to the people who supported us, especially the @hlc.bike_ca, @explorekananaskis @unitedsport1928 & more HUGE thank you! You really made this special for everyone involved. by @rob_britton

Update from my unbound 350. Yesterday I found my breaking point. This entire year has seemed like one battle after another and I finally thought I was feeling like my self again but after 3h of racing I was along, cracked, off the back. Again. I hate quoting races, it’s something I promised my self I would never do again(baring obvious reasons) but yesterday forced my hand. In the Navy I think they call it DOR. I just could not force my self to push on through the night. The bike was solid. All of my kit was dialed but my body, the most trusted asset I’ve had my whole career failed and not long after that my mind followed. It’s sucks. To have won last year and be out after 6h this year…I never thought I’d be in that position but at this point I know how ever had that call was to make it was the right one. To to rest. Like really rest and see if we can’t figure things out for the 2nd half of this year. thank you to everyone who gave me encouraging words before during and after the race. It is not lost on me, and to all my sponsors – thank you for all of your continued support, you deserve better than this and believe me when I say I will do what it takes to figure out how to get back to the way things should be. Sometimes by racing can give you so much in the next breath take so much of it away. I still obviously in love what I do and know how fortunate I am to be able to do it but right now a little break is what I need more than anything. Over and out for a little while.
