An ode to Piney River Ranch. My photos, and my Dad’s watercolor painting.

A couple of weeks ago, I made my last trek out to @pineyriverranch for a photoshoot. I got there super early, and stayed late. I cried as I looked at this magnificent view, wondering if it would be the last time I was able to be out there. My kids haven’t made it to Piney yet, and I so hope they can one day.

We hope for the best for Piney, but with it recently closing we have know idea who will buy it next, our wish is that whoever does allows the public to still visit.

My dad is a water color artist. And I asked him if he would be willing to paint Piney for me, I sent him some of the pictures that I took. And he combined them with some of his own pictures and memories from the Ranch, and created this masterpiece.

A Little Piece of Colorado Autumn 🍂

I’m delighted to introduce my newest ink and watercolor painting, Piney River Ranch in the Fall.

In the summer of 2023, Caroline and I spent a wonderful day at Piney River Ranch, near Vail, Colorado, with dear friends visiting from New Zealand. One of our fondest memories was taking a canoe out onto Piney Lake, surrounded by the magnificent Gore Range mountains.

My daughter Amy is a professional wedding photographer and has photographed many weddings and engagements at Piney River Ranch over the years. When she heard that the Ranch's current operators would be concluding their operations at the end of the 2026 summer season, she suggested that I paint it as a memory for so many who have special memories there.

Although we visited in summer, I decided to imagine the scene in autumn, with golden aspens, snow-dusted mountain peaks and those familiar green canoes resting beside the dock.

The result is this little 10 × 8-inch painting, created in black India ink and watercolor.

I hope it brings back some happy memories for those of you who have visited this beautiful place!

Drummond Castle, Scotland 🍂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

My newest watercolour — a quiet autumn view of Drummond Castle, near Crieff in Perthshire.

This one has a particularly personal connection for me. Drummond is my middle name, given to me by my parents to preserve a name from my own Scottish ancestry, and Caroline and I had the opportunity to visit the castle with our daughter Amy and son-in-law Adam in 2019.

I loved painting the great old tree, the autumn golds and greens, and the castle sitting quietly beyond the gardens.

Another place, another story — captured in watercolour.

Back at the easel.

After a long pause, I’m beginning to get Rogan’s Watercolours moving again.

I’ve been spending some time refreshing my Etsy shop and getting some of the older listings back into shape.

And what better place to start than with one of my favourites — my Pictorial Map of Colorado.

Painted in my uncomplicated watercolour style, it is my own collection of some of the Colorado places that have become special to me since we first moved here from Zimbabwe.

The place names are all written by hand, which is part of what makes this painting particularly personal to me.

It feels good to be creating again.

This month I was honoured as a watercolour artist to be featured in GrandAir Charter Service’s in-flight magazine “Tinobbhururuka”, Issue 3 for May, 2026. See pictures 2 and 3. I’ve added a few of the other pages from the impressive 60-page magazine for interest, plus a few extra photos. Such an exciting venture.

Grand Air Charter Service is an owner-run private aviation company with a fleet of 17 aircraft based at Charles Prince Airport and Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare, Zimbabwe. Founded in 2022 by aviation enthusiasts Bradley Hook and Bradley Thornton, the company specializes in personalized, on-demand air travel across Zimbabwe and the broader Southern African region. Grand Air’s services include Private Charters, Safari & Bush Flights, Shared Seat Charters and Medical Evacuations. Beyond its many domestic routes within Zimbabwe, the company facilitates cross-border travel to several Southern and Eastern African countries, including: South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Tanzania (including Zanzibar).
