Thoughtful millwork can make a small home feel surprisingly generous. Making the most of the home’s smaller footprint, while creating space for both function and collecting.

A former walk-in closet became a compact office, with deep drawers below and open shelving above for books and collected objects. In the dining room, custom plant shelves turn an existing window into a layered display. And in the kitchen, custom cabinetry gives the kitchen a tailored feel brings the same attention to detail to the heart of the home.

Honored to have been selected as an emerging professional speaker for the AIA Chicago’s Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) Symposium, “Architalks: What We Do and How We Do It.”

Grateful for the opportunity to share more about our process, our work, and the way we approach design. Thank you to everyone who attended and to the organizers for including me in such an inspiring group of speakers.

A compact bath where every inch earns its keep.

In this converted three‑flat turned duplex, space was at a premium. Through integrating the laundry and custom millwork, we created a first‑floor zone that functions as a bath, mudroom, and dog wash all in one.

Ted, our unofficial resident model.

The upstairs of the Holstein Park residence was designed with a balance of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian restraint. Quiet, warm, and intentionally pared back to create the perfect place to unwind.

This renovation was a true labor of love and a close study in thoughtful collaboration, offering deep insight into the renovation process from start to finish.

The building had survived a fire several years prior, so much of the infrastructure had already been updated. But rental-grade finishes left the interiors feeling generic and disjointed. We reimagined the home by blending Scandinavian, Japandi, and mid-century modern influences, layering natural materials, custom millwork, and locally sourced vintage finds in the redesign.

What if a closet could hold your workday?

At the Holstein Park Residence, we tucked a smart office into what was once a walk-in closet, letting work’s clutter stay behind a door while life unfolds freely in the living space.

Big news - Ross has officially joined Chicago Common! With his deep experience in architecture and focus on real estate development, we’re excited to expand our work with developers who value thoughtful, intentional design.

We’ll continue offering interior design services, led by Jill, who has been running the studio for the past three years. Together, we’re building something that goes beyond a traditional architecture or interiors firm. A collaborative design consultancy that supports projects from concept to execution.

More to come soon. Let’s build!

A Lincoln Park residence shaped by respect for its past. We reworked a later addition to restore historic charm, allowing new architecture to feel rooted and timeless. Arch-top windows anchor the family room, bringing light, proportion, and a sense of permanence back to the home.
