CHARITY OR CIC? WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? 🤔

Ever wondered? You’re probably not alone!

A few recent conversations made me realise there’s still confusion about what a Community Interest Company (CIC) actually is.

So here’s a simple explanation! 👇

🧡 A charity is an organisation established for charitable purposes and public benefit.

🧡 A CIC is a type of social enterprise set up to benefit communities. It can have charitable aims and deliver many of the same activities as a charity, but it has a different legal structure.

Both can deliver community projects, apply for funding, employ people and involve volunteers.

But can people actually earn a living working for a charity or CIC?

Absolutely!

Think about it this way:

👩‍🏫 A teacher gets paid to teach children, including sport. Someone else might volunteer to coach children at weekends.

🤝 A charity might employ a project manager, youth worker or community worker to deliver its programmes.

🏃 A running coach might volunteer at their local running club but also earn a living coaching professionally.

A CIC can equally pay people to deliver activities, manage projects and support communities.

Getting paid to do a job doesn’t take away from the good that job does.

The important thing is that money is used appropriately, payments are reasonable and the organisation delivers the community benefit it was established to provide.

CICs also have something called an asset lock, which helps protect their assets for community benefit.

Different structures. Similar ambitions. Both can make a real difference.

And that’s what we’re trying to build with SAVR Run CIC. Creating opportunities, bringing people together and making a positive difference in our communities.

If you found this useful, please give it a share. You never know who else might be wondering the same thing!

And if you’ve got questions, just ask. Always happy to have a chat. 😊

🎥 The extended version. And a bit more honesty.

I shared a shorter video the other day to introduce @movember . This is the longer version.

Truth is, I didn’t particularly want to watch it back, never mind edit it. 😂

I’ve been chatting to a couple of other lads recently about anxiety, including the anxiety that can come with putting yourself out there on social media.

And I get it.

Sometimes it’s the stuff going on in your own head. Sometimes it’s worrying about what other people think. And sometimes it’s the silence.

You put something out there, particularly something that means a lot to you, and you’re left wondering whether the message is landing.

Or whether people just think you’re being a bit of a dick. 😂

I find that difficult sometimes.

You see people happily sharing competitions to win something they’ve probably never heard of, yet getting someone to share something you’re genuinely trying to do for your community can feel like hard work.

And I know nobody owes me a like, a comment or a share. That’s not really the point.

It’s more about how easy it is to start questioning yourself when you’re putting yourself out there.

But then I remind myself why I’m doing it.

If one person watches, relates to something I’ve said, feels a little less alone or decides to have a conversation they might otherwise have avoided, then it’s worth it.

So here’s the longer version. Probably a bit of rambling, probably a few awkward moments, but it’s me.

And if you’re someone who struggles with putting yourself out there, you’re definitely not the only one.

Like father, like son! 😂👨🏻

First time we’ve both started growing a tashe for Movember!

Not sure either of us will be winning any awards for them just yet, but we’ve got to start somewhere! 😂

A bit of fun, but behind Movember there’s a really important message.

As a dad, I want Harry to grow up knowing that it’s okay to talk, okay to struggle and that he never has to bottle things up.

Something I’m still learning to do myself, if I’m being fair.

Here’s to the next generation of men feeling more comfortable talking about how they feel.

And hopefully a bit more facial hair by the end of November! 😂💙

Who is joining us?

“Man up.”
“Be strong.”
“Don’t cry.”

How many times have we heard those words growing up?

And then we wonder why so many men find it difficult to talk about how they’re really feeling.

I know myself that opening up isn’t always easy. Sometimes it’s easier to say you’re fine, even when you’re not.

We need to change that.

Not every conversation needs to be a deep one. Sometimes it’s just about having someone there, someone who listens without judging.

This Movember, let’s encourage more men to talk, listen and look out for one another. 🧡

Being strong doesn’t mean staying silent.

Morning walk, fresh air, a lovely morning, Nova having load of 💩… but sometimes it can be a simple walk in nature that helps.

Give @savrrun a follow… I will post more cute dog pics 😂

⏰ 10am | 11am | 12pm
📍 REYT Sauna
🎟️ BOOK NOW — DIRECT LINK IN @savrrun BIO!

🍺 FREE ALCOHOL-FREE BEER INCLUDED WITH YOUR SESSION!

Drink it while you’re there or take it home for later. Entirely up to you!

To mark International Men’s Day and Movember, we’re teaming up with @reyt_sauna to give men an opportunity to switch off, relax and enjoy an hour out.

A sauna, an optional cold plunge, an alcohol-free beer and a bit of a chat. What’s not to like?

Men’s mental health is something I’m passionate about, and I know firsthand how important it is to have time away from everything.

But this isn’t about sitting around talking about mental health. There’s no pressure to talk about anything. Just an opportunity to relax, meet people and enjoy yourself.

🍺 A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO OUR BREWERY SUPPORTERS!

🧡 Pig Love Brewing @piglovebrewing
🧡 Saltaire Brewery @saltairebrewery
🧡 Ilkley Brewery @ilkleybrewery

Three fantastic breweries getting behind what we’re trying to do so far and generously providing alcohol-free beers for the sessions. Really appreciate your support!

We’re starting with three sessions at 10am, 11am and 12pm.

If they prove popular, we’ll look at adding more sessions, subject to availability, either on the day or throughout November as part of Movember.

And we’d love to get more Yorkshire businesses involved!

Whether that’s donating products, merchandise, prizes or even sponsoring a session for your employees or members of the public, please get in touch.

We might even make the occasional exception for businesses outside Yorkshire! 😂

Come on your own, bring a mate or get a few of the lads together. You don’t have to be a runner or know anyone.

I’ve put the direct booking link in our @savrrun Instagram bio for now to make booking easier.

Please give this a share. You never know who might appreciate an hour out.

$Sometimes all it takes is a message… “Fancy a coffee (or AF beer)?” ☕️ Great to catch up with Danny yesterday. What started as a quick coffee turned into a really good chat about running, mental health, life, DJ’ing and tricycles and what we’re both up to at the moment. Really good to hear what @dan.brown89 been doing and share a bit more about what I’ve been working on too. One thing I really appreciated was Danny saying how good it was to see me being brave and doing something different. Sometimes you just need to hear something like that from someone every now and then. A few words of encouragement can mean more than people realise. And of course, we couldn’t go to @fractpontefract without grabbing a bit of brunch! 😋👌 Even better, we were looked after by my favourite FRACT employee, my niece Neveah! ❤️ @bradleyjsutcliffe , next time you need to stop rushing around, mate! Pull up a chair, grab a coffee and have a proper catch-up with us! 😂 But on a slightly more serious note… As we head into Movember, with International Men’s Day coming up on 19 November, I’ll be sharing a few posts over the coming days about something that’s really important to me. Men’s mental health… And an event over at @reyt_sauna. We already have @piglovebrewing @saltairebrewery @ilkleybrewery on board we would love you to be too! @waggataurus including you 😃 I think sometimes, as blokes, we just need that hour out. A coffee with a mate, an alcohol-free beer, a catch-up with someone we’ve not seen for ages, or even a chinwag with a complete stranger. You soon realise that we’re all dealing with something. Family, relationships, kids, work, sport, money… you name it. We’ve all got our worries and concerns. The trouble is, we don’t always talk about them. And sometimes you don’t even need to talk about what’s bothering you. Just getting out, having a laugh and knowing you’re not on your own can make a difference. So if there’s someone you’ve been meaning to catch up with, drop them a message. You never know how much they might need it. Or how much you might need it yourself. 🧡 #Movember #MensMentalHealth #InternationalMensDay #BuiltByTheRun by @run_mr59nce$

A bit of a milestone today. Our first ever SAVR Run CIC directors’ meeting! @savrrun

Finally, three of us around the table. A massive thank you to Paul and Jo for your time, support and belief in what we’re trying to build.

@rob7lindsey our SAVR Run CIC ambassador, thank you for being part of the journey. Looking forward to getting you around the table soon too! Sushi awaits (other options available! 😂🧡)

🧡 FOLLOW @savrrun as we continue the journey!

There’s still plenty to think about and work through, but every day feels like another small step forward. Today helped us focus on where we can really add value and make a difference.

One thing we talked about is particularly personal to me: men’s mental health.

I know how hard it can be to open up. Sometimes I struggle with it myself. It’s not always about finding the words. It’s about knowing who you can trust, who you feel comfortable talking to and whether you’re ready to share what’s going on.

Running has been my way of dealing with things. My time to clear my head, my coping mechanism at times, but also a way to meet people, build friendships and feel part of something.

That’s why our strapline, BUILT BY THE RUN, means so much to me. Because so much of this really has been built by running.

But SAVR Run CIC won’t just be about running.

It’s about people. Bringing people together, building connections and creating spaces where people feel comfortable talking, without pressure or judgement.

Men’s mental health is close to my heart, but I know women face these challenges too. We’ve all got things going on that others might never see.

I certainly don’t have all the answers. I’m still figuring plenty out myself. But if being a little more open about my own experiences helps someone else, that’s a good reason to keep going.

We’ve only got one life. We might as well look out for one another.

Still lots to do, but today felt like an important step.

NO TWO DAYS ARE EVER THE SAME!

Ahead of our meeting, Nat from Wakefield Council asked if I fancied joining her on a walk she was attending.

Of course, I said yes!

Little did I know it involved poles! 😂 And I’ve since learnt not to make the mistake of calling them sticks!

My first introduction to Nordic Walking, and what a great morning it turned out to be!

A massive thank you to David, our walk leader, and the lovely group who made me feel so welcome. Great to meet everyone, have a laugh, learn something new and enjoy a bit of autumn sunshine. ☀️

And it turns out there’s a little more to Nordic Walking than simply walking with poles!

Afterwards, it was great to catch up with Nat from Wakefield Council to chat through a few ideas, explore potential opportunities and get a better understanding of where we might be able to make a difference through @savrrun

Also managed a separate catch-up with Nat from @reyt_sauna for a really good chat around men’s health, Movember and a AF beer. Hopefully more to share on that soon! 💙

And to round off the day, it was great to meet Kris from Reel Talk to chat about our respective journeys setting up CICs, what we’re both working towards and where there might be opportunities to support one another and potentially collaborate.

Still plenty of work to do, but lots of positive conversations, new connections and ideas starting to take shape.

One thing I’m learning is that you never quite know where a conversation, a coffee or even an unexpected walk with poles might lead! 😂

Let’s see what today brings! First a run!!

CAS AND FEV WORKING TOGETHER? WHATEVER NEXT! 😃

A Cas Tigers fan heading over to Featherstone Rovers Foundation to talk about working together. Who’d have thought it!

What was meant to be an hour’s meeting turned into nearly two hours, which probably tells you how much we had to chat about!

Great to meet @jamie.cording . A really good guy who clearly cares about Featherstone and the local community.

Really interesting to hear about some of the initiatives they’re currently working on, the projects they’ve got coming up and where there might be opportunities to support each other.

Despite everything that’s happened with the rugby club, it’s brilliant to see @fevfoundation continuing to do some fantastic work in the community.

One thing I’ve really enjoyed over the last few weeks is getting out, meeting people and seeing just how many organisations and individuals are trying to make a positive difference locally.

That’s a big part of what I’m looking to build through @savrrun

Yes, running is part of it, but the ambition goes much further. It’s about bringing people together, improving health and wellbeing, creating opportunities and helping people realise what they’re capable of.

And I certainly don’t think we need to do all of that on our own!

It doesn’t matter what colour shirt you wear or which team you support. When you get chatting, you realise you’ve often got the same values, the same drive and the same reasons for doing what you do.

That’s what I love about these conversations. Sharing ideas, learning from each other and seeing where we can join things up rather than everyone doing their own thing.

Really looking forward to building on this relationship with Jamie and Featherstone Rovers Foundation over the coming weeks and months.

And hopefully we’ll see @fevroversrlfc back out on the rugby pitch too!

Ever wondered why Eliud Kipchoge smiles when he’s running a marathon? Even when things start getting tough? 😃

Turns out, there might actually be some science behind it!

A 2018 study found that runners who smiled while running used 2.8% less oxygen compared with when they were frowning, and 2.2% less than when running normally.

That’s a potential improvement in running economy, simply from smiling!

So what are the benefits?

😁 Better running economy – Using less oxygen to maintain the same pace.

💪 Less tension – Smiling may help you relax your face, jaw and shoulders rather than tensing up when things get tough.

🧠 Managing the effort – Smiling may help make running feel a little easier, particularly when you’re starting to struggle.

😊 A more positive mindset – Sometimes changing your expression can help change how you approach a difficult run.

Now, before everyone starts grinning their way to a marathon PB, it’s worth pointing out that the study was relatively small, and a 2.8% improvement in running economy doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly run 2.8% faster!

But it’s an interesting bit of research, and something that’s easy enough to try.

Next time you’re halfway up a hill, pushing through an interval or struggling through those last few miles, try a smile.

Relax those shoulders, unclench your jaw and see if it makes a difference.

And if nothing else, you’ll look a bit happier in the race photos! 😂
