Run Rabbit Run announced yesterday that the 2027 and 2028 men’s and women’s champions will each receive $100,000 for the win.

For context: this year’s race, which starts today in Steamboat Springs, pays roughly $100,000 across the entire purse with $20,000 to each winner.

The new number is five times that, to each champion. As far as we can tell, it is the largest single prize event-based prize award ever paid to a race winner in (modern) trail running history.

Run Rabbit Run has been a leader in the sport on prize money distribution since the early 2010s. But 2026 has become the year of the purse, with events like Gorge Waterfalls, Broken Arrow, and the Sunapee Scramble all making big category announcements.

This one certainly resets the ceiling though.

Some of the questions we’re reflecting on:

• Does the lure of $100K pull elites off away from UTMB and World Championships next year?

• Where does the money go next, if at all? Does UTMB respond? Some other marquee event?

Ruth Croft will not start the 2026 UTMB. The defending champion announced her withdrawal this morning via Instagram.

In her words: “While I felt my fitness has never been so good... today my heart and mind want to be elsewhere.”

She credited advice from Paul Lind, that a runner only gets so many trips to the well in a 100-miler, and said she wants every one of them to count. “My decision was very hard yet obvious to make.”

This was the woman to beat. Croft won Tarawera 100k for the fourth time and the MaXi-Race Annecy earlier this season, and her coach said she was absorbing more hard training than at any point in four years together. She was set to chase the first back-to-back women’s UTMB win since Rory Bosio in 2013 and 2014.

Croft signed off “until next time.”
