🍽️ “The power is on your plate and in the hands of the people shaping the future of our food and farming system” - Molly Biddell (@ruralmole), Head of Natural Capital from Knepp Wilding (@kneppwilding & @kneppwildingkitchen)

🚜 Jobs that didn’t exist five years ago are now central to how we manage land, restore ecosystems, and feed the country. And in the next decade, we’ll see even more new roles, skills and ideas reshaping our landscapes.

But the power of land isn’t just in production...

➡️ It’s in people.

➡️ It’s in place.

➡️ It’s in the way farms contribute through biodiversity, clean water, carbon storage, community wellbeing and access to nature.

➡️ And crucially, it’s in the way we grow nutritious food through sustainable farming systems that work with the environment, not against it.

To build a resilient food system, we need:

💡 New voices

👩🏼‍🏫 New career pathways

♻️ A wider definition of “productive”

🪴 Truly sustainable land management

🤝🏼 Collaboration at landscape scale

And so much more.

🎄 This Christmas, let’s not forget the people behind the scenes and recognise that food connects us, farming sustains us, and the choices we make as producers, policymakers, eaters and communities, shape the future of our countryside.

🍽️ The power is on your plate - let’s use it wisely...

💚 Thanks to Molly for her endless efforts in making soils and food production a better place. It was great to have Molly with us at the Ark Summit back in June, sharing a stage with Patrick Holden (@patrickholdensft) from the Sustainable Food Trust (@susfoodtrust) and David Wilson.

“These new jobs and skills may be different from traditional rural roles, but are more likely to attract a generation of eco-anxious Gen Zs who are bored with being stuck behind screens, losing their jobs to ChatGPT and feeling hopeless about our planet.”

Pitch Up! is all about creating opportunities from the ground up, by connecting forward-thinking enterprises with regenerative land owners.

Whether it’s woodland saunas, egg vending machines or businesses you might not even expect to find on a farm... As @ruralmole of Partner farm @hampton_estate writes in @farmersweekly, bringing new businesses onto the land presents myriad opportunities; creating new jobs, developing essential skills, and regenerating our soil…

It’s all about reconnecting people to the land – that’s why we’re saying get ON it!

We Are Living In Systems That Are Causing Harm | Molly Biddell

We’ve built systems that work perfectly — at doing the wrong things.

They deliver efficiency, scale, convenience… and collapse.

As Molly Biddell puts it:

“We’re living in bad systems. They’re incredibly effective — just not at delivering what we actually want.”

The next generation won’t just follow the rules — they’ll rewrite them.

🗣️ “Data is the most important thing to tell these stories... We need systems that incentivise us to collect the right kind of data”.

Having both appeared on the same panel (‘Grazing for Good: Livestock and Biodiversity in the UK’) at ORFC this year, SFT CEO, Patrick Holden, and Molly Biddell, Head of Natural Capital at Knepp Estate – a 3,500-acre rewilding project in West Sussex – came together once more, this time for an episode of the SFT Podcast.

In this clip, Patrick and Molly talk about the importance of measuring climate, nature and social impacts – something the @gfmcoaltion is leading on to help farmers measure and improve whole-farm sustainability – and how this data is being collected at @kneppwilding.

During the episode, Patrick and Molly also discuss:

🦋 The work going on at Knepp Estate – what Molly calls ‘a radical rewilding experiment’

👩‍🌾 Human intervention in rewilding projects like Knepp

📣 Educating the public about more sustainable food and farming systems

“Farmers are not strangers to uncertainty. It’s something we’re very used to working with – uncertain weather, prices, animal (and human) behaviour, the list goes on. I’d go so far as to say we are some of the best at operating in uncertainty.”

In our latest blog, our ambassador Molly Biddell shares an update on English agri-environmental policy and the changing world of nature markets. With practical advice on how to navigate current government schemes, BNG deals worth noting, and a key consultation to keep an eye on, we hope this helps you feel more informed and ready to make the most of what's available.

A very beautiful evening last night in the beaver pen at Knepp with the brilliant @kneppwildlandfdn team where we saw the legends (the beavers) in action doing their ecological engineering. It’s amazing how much the wetland that they’ve created has changed in the mere 18 months I’ve known it.

Some reasons why beavers are so cool -

They are aquatic creatures so they need to live in water that’s deep enough to hide in. So, if there aren’t deep enough pools/ponds they naturally start damming, creating dams out of pieces of wood 🪵 they dam in response to the sound of trickling water. Pretty cool. This damming slows the flow of water and creates natural wetlands which means water is held in the landscape. This reduces the impact of flooding and also holds water for when everything else dries up. Think a sponge. 🧽

Slowing the flow of water and creating wetlands also allows pollutants to be stripped out of the water, so the beavers are helping us clean the river too 🧼

The wetland habitat they have created is so abundant and diverse, a real wildlife haven. We recorded so many species while we were there last night. For a human it also feels very calming as it’s such a natural abundant landscape (many of which we’ve historically drained). 🪶

It was so cool to actually see them IRL, we need more beavers in the right places to help fix our broken riven systems and reduce the impacts of climate change. They are a top quality nature based solution 🦫

Also contrary to some people’s belief, they don’t eat fish 🐟 they are herbivores and keep their teeth sharp by eating wood. taken in Knepp Wilding by @ruralmole
