🌳We’re Hiring🌳

We’re looking for a Forest Craftsperson/Ranger to join our small-but-mighty team at Hampton! You’ll be out with our forester — thinning, felling, hedge planting, bracken cutting, habitat managing, log making etc. The rest of the time you’ll be our Ranger on the ground, inspiring people on the precious nature we manage, connecting with dog walkers, coordinating citizen science projects, and helping protect one of Surrey’s most special landscapes.

If you’ve got initiative, a love of nature and land management, a can-do attitude, and want to be part of a dynamic team we want to hear from you. Training provided where you need it. 🐾🪵

Check the vacancies page on our website for the full Job Description.

📍 Hampton Estate, Seale, Farnham
📩 Apply: CV + cover letter or 2-min video to recruitment@hamptonestate.co.uk
⏳ Applications close 31st October 2026

Happy Back British Farming Day - you know we love the cows, but today, for the last time, it has to be all about the hops.

What are hops? Those green, fluffy cones that flavour your Guinness, Doombar or Landlord to name but a few. If you like a warm, brown beer - you like hops.

Having grown up in Kent, hop farms were a part of my childhood (I had to explain to a certain Gloucestershire farmer what they were when we first got together almost 11 years ago) and they have formed a significant part of British agricultural history. From over 2000 hop growers in the 1800’s to less than 40 today, hops are a victim of the changing climate, consumer choices and the rising costs of farming.

This week, @hampton_estate harvested hops for the last time; the final chapter in a hop picking tale spanning four generations on this farm. We came together on Monday to remember and celebrate a rich history of pickers and pints at Hampton, giving tours of the oast and letting her run for the final time. We may have only been a line in the story, but we will always remember harvest 2025 & 2026 as two of our favourites.

Details of the final hop harvest at Hampton featured on BBC 4’s Farming Today on Tuesday 8th September. You can listen now on iplayer.

The sound of our cows munching their grass is one of the very best. James and I got a bit excited trying to capture it for you with swanky magnetic microphones ! Enjoy the munch and crunch as the cows chow down on their deferred grazing grass.

Excellent afternoon on my farm nerding out over river restoration with a wonderful bunch of landscape recoverers (and fellow Nuffield Scholars) - discussing financial, bureaucratic, environmental and cultural benefits and barriers to restoring and protecting the watercourses that run through our farms - and how we can hopefully manage the wild pendulum swing of water abundance to scarcity that we seem to now face every year.

The impact of this drought is visible all across Hampton in so many different ways. It’s really terrifying how much we are feeling the effects of climate change. Very real down here in our hop garden where we are seeing a 75% reduction in yield because of the lack of rain. The fuggles are struggling.

We decided we should share the realities of this drought with you so you can see how it impacts farming and land management. Resilience is the key word for us, working out how we can build resilience into our enterprises and businesses as heat waves like these become the new normal.

The giggling is a coping mechanism.

A big move across the farm into a new paddock for the breeding herd and their calves today (that’s the mums, their calves and our new bull Wellington). We are eeeking out the grass we have as it’s all burnt off with this heat and complete lack of rain. We are predominantly on sandy soil so it retains very little moisture meaning it turns brown and savannah like very quickly!

As this is the second year we’ve had so little summer rain all our farm conversations are about strategic climate resilience - how can we hold more water on the land in times of flood (eg by increasing water holding capacity in our soils and wetland / river systems) to support us in these increasingly frequent droughts.

Our whole herd is on no fence collars which we love for making our grazing system work for us (rotating around paddocks, grazing woodland and heathland).

NUFFIELD TRAVEL CANADA - the middle bit!

Attending the first @horizonsgathering with thanks to @antoneillos @integratedsoils and the @axtenfamily @boxhfarm clan!!

A readjustment of the group to just me, @tudorroderick and @alix_montalt and we headed east to Manitoba for a long awaited visit to Nerbas Angus 🤠

Saw some@serious bale pod magic - that scrappy area that’s lacking plants? A 25/26 winter bale pod that comes back tremendously after a year and delivers for at least another 8 years with better grass growth and greater weather resilience 💪

Another throwback to an early morning bird walk hosted by the brilliant Penny and Dave from @lughurst_ecology on Puttenham Common back in May. We had a glorious morning finding woodlarks and learning all about the bird life and biodiversity on Puttenham Common. It’s always such a treat to spend time learning from Penny and Dave! Thank you to everyone that joined us.

A throw back to our Local Farm Evening back in May. It was a glorious evening where we welcomed lots of you to the farm to learn about what we do at Hampton - lots of great chats about cows, woodlands, nature, tractors, pond dipping, forest bathing, sauna, campsites and more! Thank you to everyone that came and to our brilliant Hampton team and volunteers for all the work in making the evening such a success 🙌

And @tara_dbarry for the beautiful pics!
