REDEMPTION • RENEWAL
@OriginalLandlords

Every year I’ve made a post on June 21st marking the anniversary of my release from a short bid in AZ State Prison. Nothing I’m proud of but it’s a stark reminder that I overcame some tremendous battles with myself that included all of the above when it comes to living a toxic life of self absorption. I can’t possibly list everyone I’ve done but every now and then a flashback or memory will hit me like a brick. The mind does what it wants and when it’s sober, it can be a very haunting place to live. That’s one of the reasons I kept it flooded with substances to keep the demons at bay until they learned to swim. I got to a point where nothing worked anymore. Alcohol, drugs, sex, or whatever. My mind just couldn’t process anything and my body was giving signs of shutting down. I had to take action or I might not be here writing this post today.

This year, I was too busy having an amazing time with my son and immediate family in San Diego and all but forgot this important event that changed my life to what you see now. It took some deep soul searching and a lot of work to get here. I’ve lost a lot of family and friends to alcohol and dope the past six years including my father. I can’t imagine leaving my son to find his way without me, it’s a nightmare to think about.

I broke the cycle. He’ll never see me drunk, high, angry and abusive and that is a gift in itself. I pray daily that the energy that flows through me passes down to him and teach him what I never learned. I learn more from him sometimes than I do from life itself. We’re in this together and I’m so proud to be his father. One day, he’ll read my story and understand where his pops came from and what he went through but until then, we live life to the fullest!

2026 Pacific Southwest Emmy’s
@fnxtv  @theacademy

We didn’t bring home the Emmy, but we showed up, represented, and celebrated something bigger than an award.

Tonight, I had the honor of attending the Pacific Southwest Emmy Awards as the Art Director for Cleaning’s A Cakewalk.

That’s a win in itself.

As Indigenous creatives, we don’t always see our stories, our landscapes, or our communities reflected on these stages. So every nomination, every screening, every red carpet moment is another reminder that our stories belong in these spaces.

I’m incredibly proud of our entire team and grateful to have helped bring this project to life through art direction and visual storytelling.

Congratulations to my fellow nominees and to the winners. We’ll keep creating, keep telling our stories, and keep showing up.

Because sometimes the victory isn’t in taking home the trophy, it’s in making sure our people are seen. Congrats to @SaharSpice and for securing another statue for her work on “Navajo Highways” with Pete Sands!! 🙌🏾 Thank you for the invite @frankblanquet I appreciate the love and inclusion!

On to the next chapter.

Read More Books 📚

I’ve read more books in the past 6 years than I’ve ever read in my life and it’s made me a better writer, thinker, and overall person. Not in a sense that it’s absolving sins from my past, (feels like it sometimes ngl) but more that other people share the same worldview. I also come across many words I have no clue about and look them up. In return, my vocabulary and grammar has leveled up in ways that have changed the way I understand people, places, and situations.

Anthony Bourdain was a man loved by millions, a person who seemed to be living the dream. Buried deep beneath the snarky intelligence and snobbish humor about food, culture, and life was a lonely depressed man. I gotta say, there were some eerily similar sentiments I had about some of his forthcomings from an outsider perspective recorded beautifully by Tom Vitale, his producer.

What I learned from this book is that I’m on the right path and it’s one I’m grateful for and will continue to strive toward. This book was a gift from my mother last Xmas and written inside the jacket cover was a message. Mom has always given me books in all the years that have gone by and has always written something inside to remind me of who I am and where I’m going.

Thanks Mom ❤️ taken in Phoenix, Arizona by @rvso78

For my son’s 15th birthday, I took him on his first trip through the Pacific Northwest.

Over four days, we traveled through Oregon and Washington, crossing the ancestral homelands of many Indigenous Nations. We explored waterfalls, forests, coastlines, cities, and small towns, but more importantly, we talked. A lot.

As someone of mixed Tribal heritage, I don’t have one specific coming-of-age ceremony to pass down. Instead, I’ve chosen to create those moments through experiences like this.

Every trip is an opportunity to teach him something new, how to navigate the world, respect the lands and peoples we visit, stay curious, and understand that every place has a story long before we arrive.

As a designer, I believe storytelling can happen through clothing, photography, and film. As a father, I’m learning that the most important stories are the ones we create together.

This wasn’t just a birthday trip.

It was another step in preparing him for whatever comes next.

Posse On Broadway
@OriginalLandlords

“We came, we saw, we kicked its BUTT!” LOL, Long before the Goonies, Kainoa was a Ghostbusters fan and he likes that quote by “Venkman” aka Bill Murray. Yesterday at the airport we got through security and I said: we came, we saw, and he finished it off for me;)

We did the damn thing and now that he’s home nestled up in his room I’m just now starting to unpack. What we did wasn’t just for fun or adventure but it was also to put our name UP! My son takes pride in our last name, he loves finding spots to place RVSO and Original Landlords stickers when we travel. We’ve put them ALL OVER! It’s something I’ve handed down to him, the art of getting UP! He understands the concept and loves to see other designs when we’re out on the road.

Both Seattle and Portland have a vibrant GRAFF scene and I look forward to coming back to contribute when I’m not with my boy;) Be safe out there y’all and stay hydrated!!

Something In The Way
@OriginalLandlords

This trip was so much more than a Father & Son excursion, it was a pilgrimage. We weren’t the only ones who were at these destinations that hold significant value to this thing called LIFE. Everyone has their own interpretations of what film, music, culture and history means to them. We traversed through the sacred forests and coastlines of our kinfolk in the Pacific Northwest and were greeted by our relatives in the sky, waterways, land and air. It was a journey I’ll never forget and every time I looked at my wingman, I couldn’t help but feel Creator’s presence.

We completed our PNW loop and are here at the Portland Airport ready to fly back to the Southwest with both of our cups filled. I don’t know what is gonna top this, mostly likely NYC next year for his 16th;)

Thanks for tapping in with us! It’s really fun sharing our life with you all and I hope it inspires some of you!

Goonie’s Never Die

This trip has been nothing short of spectacular! We just ended the day here in beautiful Astoria, Oregon after spending the night in Gleneden Beach at the Salishan Coastal Lodge. I never thought in a million years I’d be doing ANY of this much less with my son. I’m a blessed man and I can’t STRESS enough how much SOBRIETY is the main reason we’re doing all of this. It took 6 years of hard work, looking in the mirror everyday and righting the wrongs. Hundreds of hours of therapy and counseling, hundreds of journal pages and many miles traveled sharing my story.

All of this came at a cost I was willing and able to pay for with interest. If you’ve EVER thought about getting help for substance abuse, please seek. You CANNOT do it alone. I’m not perfect but I’m a much better father and still doing my best to be a good relative to all. Thanks for tapping in and watching our adventure! We’re off to Aberdeen and then Seattle for the night!

Working West • Canal Convergence 2026
@OriginalLandlords

The contract is signed. The work has begun.

I’m honored to share that Original Landlords has been selected to create a new body of work for Canal Convergence 2026, presented by Scottsdale Arts.

Over the past week, I’ve been sourcing reclaimed denim, workwear, and vintage materials that will become the foundation of this collection. Every faded seam, repair, and worn edge carries a history, and together they’ll be transformed into something that speaks to the history of Arizona’s canals, labor, community, and Indigenous design.

This is more than a collection. It’s a process of reclaiming, rebuilding, and honoring the people and stories that shaped this place long before us.

Over the coming months I’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes looks at sourcing, design development, and the making of the collection as it comes to life.

See you in November 2026.

15 Years Young!

It’s hard to fathom I’m someone’s father sometimes. I’m amazed how much this kid has grown over the years! He’s massive at only 15, he’s still got more GROWING to do! We’ve both come a long way from when he was just a few weeks old and I had absolutely no clue what to do.

There were days when I couldn’t stop him from crying and it just about broke me. There were other times when I wasn’t fit to be in his life but tried my best. I didn’t have the best teacher of what a father is supposed to be, I’ve done everything opposite from what I experienced and it seems to be working.

Breaking the cycle of generational trauma isn’t easy but very possible and will change not just your life, but everyone around you. Whether that be for good or bad is another matter and honestly is none of my concern. What matters is the relationship I have with my son and the experiences we share together.

Tomorrow, my son and I head to the Pacific Northwest for his 15th birthday. We’ve got four days of waterfalls, coastline, forests, cities, and hundreds of miles of conversation ahead of us.

My son and I come from a mixed Tribal heritage, so we don’t have one traditional coming-of-age ceremony. Instead, these journeys have become ours. Every trip is an opportunity to teach, learn, and prepare him for the future.

I want him to learn how to navigate airports, read maps, meet new people, respect other Indigenous Nations, appreciate different landscapes, and understand that wherever we go, we’re guests on someone else’s ancestral homeland.

Blessed, thankful, and grateful to be his Father.
