We love real food on the go because we reckon real food means real energy.

And that’s why we love the 18g single-serve of Pic’s SHOTS that you can throw in a pocket or pack, rip open and eat wherever you are.

It’s portable fuel for adventurers: real food that makes sense when you’re out doing stuff.

There are two flavours: Smooth and Smooth with South Island Bush Honey. I like they honey and Rehua likes the smooth.

Caught our first ever Sea Run Trout…

We weren’t even trying to.

We had missed out on whitebait & the Kahawai were skunking us too…

Then this little tug tug of a bite happened and we had a graceful silver bullet of a fish on the line.

It didn’t take us long to get it home to @franzjoseftop10 to cook it up on the smoker.

It tasted just like salmon!!! Delicious.

Rā whānau @roimata_anahera what an absolutely incredible year it has been.

Starting off on the West Coast, finding pounamu, white baiting, revisiting the place you grew up in. We did it well a full 8 months of showing the kids the West Coast.

Then receiving your moko kauae.

We did a huge summer road trip through Lake Moeraki, Banks Peninsula, Tekapo, Wakaptipu, Hāwea, Haast and back up Te Tai Poutini.

Moving back to Tairawhiti and starting a new job as an educator for Tairawhiti Museum.

And we wrapped up the year with another massive whānau road trip through Golden Bay, Mawhera, Arahura, Hokitika, Franz Josef and Picton.

We have definitely put some k’s on the truck and kayaked a fair few as well. It’s been a goodie.

Can’t wait to see what adventures we have over the next year. by @sam_the_trap_man

The @westcoastnewzealand to us is all about heritage experiences and being the pounamu capital of the world.

That’s why we chose to base ourselves at @top10greymouth on our West Coast trip. It had us in a perfectly central location for all the things we wanted to do.

Not to mention that you can find pounamu on the beach right out in front of your accommodation. That and the playground, mini golf, games room and pedal cars are pretty awesome too.

On this trip we checked out @kokatahiblacksmith @polishandpan.nz @thenationalkiwicentre @hokitika.sandwich.company @ihaka_weepu & spent a bunch of time fishing at Lake Kaniere as well as cooking over fires on the beach.

It was an incredible whānau holiday with beautiful weather and friendly people.

Golden Bay was an absolute blast of a whānau holiday. Literally around every corner was a new adventure!!!

@northwesthorse Treks tailored a trek specifically for the level of our kids and it was fantastic.

We visited Wharariki Beach which lived up to its hype for being beautiful. We liked the caves here too.

We fed the eels at Cllingwood and cooked up whitebait patties on the beach at Tōtara.

Then headed to @musselinngoldenbay in for a feed and stumbled across their Monday night sing along session which was a real hoot.

Anyway what I’m trying to say is Golden Bay is fantastic and jam packed full of adventure for all ages. We went in September and it was warm and beautiful.

Basing yourself at Pohara Beach is a good call to. Everything is within striking distance and the things you need are right on the doorstep including the beach.

Book Review: Hunting Distant Places by @darylcrimp . Published by @batemanbooks

Daryl Crimp is one of the most humorous outdoor authors I have read. Just brimming with chuckles and his most recent book Hunting Distant Places is no exception.

What sets this book apart from other hunting yarns however is that it’s not just based in Aotearoa, Crimpy takes us to all sorts of countries and really gets into the culture of hunting in other countries through the characters he meets.

The other yarns I particularly enjoyed were the ones where he hunts with his son Daniel Crimp. Such relatable stories of hunting with a young fella.

All in all this is a real cracker of a book if you’re after a good hunting book. It’s one of those great ones for the bush where each chapters is a stand alone story. A good pick it up, put it down, pick it back up book if you know what I mean. I can really recommend.

RRP: $39.99 from your local book seller

Top close by things to do while staying at @poharabeachtop10

-Wainui Waterfall walk: This is one of the most stunning waterfall walks we have ever done. It’s super kid friendly and the river is absolutely loaded with Whio.

-Waikoropupu Springs: These are just magnificent. Like visiting a coral reef but in a river. Famous for being the 3rd most pristine spring in the entire world and again a very kid friendly walk.

- The Grove: A magnificent wander through limestone canyons and caves. Like being transported into another world. A great rainy day activity full of look outs and Nikau Forest.

Then at the park we can really recommend:
- The games room with air hockey, football and tables tennis.
- The go carts that you can zip around the park on. They even have an adults one.
- Icecreams at the dairy. They are huge and the real fruit icecreams are great.
- Stepping out of your cabin straight onto the beach.

We feel like we only scratched the surface of this area@and will@definitely be coming back. The staff at @poharabeachtop10 were super friendly and helpful too so when we do you know where we will be staying.

As part of @easternwhiolink second Tane weekend we did a Tuna workshop with Uncle Kira and Uncle Ruka.

Harvesting Kai and preparing it is a key part of establishing a relationship with our ecosystems.

They say the difference between conservation and kaitiakitanga is that conservation manages land. It keeps the ecosystem at arms length and manages it.

Kaitiakitanga treats people as part of that ecosystem and focusses on relationships that bring about abundance. Mahinga kai is part of that relationship and it’s a model that we believe benefits both the ecosystems and the people that engage in the @easternwhiolink project.

A huge thanks to @journeysendstation for hosting us and @leading_from_the_land for funding our Tane weekends.

Sunday Gear Review: The @crispi_nz Titan Evo. My favourite boot on the market.

But it’s had a nice little upgrade.

The EFX midsole propels you forward when your walking resulting in a lower energy output during the day meaning you can walk further for longer.

It’s a light weight boot with soft leather which gives you a comfortable fit. The boot relies on wires to offer you support rather than heavy structural leather allowing us to get away with wearing a much less heavy boot.

The Titan is high cut with a great waterproof layer making it the perfect boot for crossing small creeks and streams.

But overall if I had to sum the boot up in a word I’d call it comfortable.

It’s definitely my pick for North Island bush adventures.

They say you get what you pay for in life. RRP- $849.99

Next up in our Meet the Team series is Sam Gibson. @sam_the_trap_man

From being a guest on our MentalHunts YouTube channel to now becoming one of our newest trustees, With his own lived experience and a genuine passion for helping others, we’re stoked to have Sam on the team.

“Sam Gibson, better known as Sam the Trap Man, is a bushman, hunter, trapper, conservationist, author and storyteller who has spent much of his life outdoors. Growing up in the Waioweka, Sam found his place in the bush through hunting, fishing and trapping, and has spoken openly about how being outdoors provided a place where he could thrive when traditional environments weren’t always the right fit for him. That lived experience has shaped his strong belief in the value of connection, purpose and belonging.

Sam is also the founder and Co-Chair of Eastern Whio Link, a hunter and fisherman-led conservation project he helped establish to restore whio (blue duck) populations in the Waioweka. What began with a small group of hunters and four remaining breeding pairs has grown into a registered charitable trust involving volunteers, tangata whenua, landowners and conservation organisations, with the project achieving significant increases in whio numbers while expanding its work to protect other native species.

As a Trustee of MentalHunts, Sam brings a unique combination of lived experience, deep outdoor knowledge, conservation leadership and an authentic connection with hunting and rural communities. His experience building Eastern Whio Link from an idea into a functioning charitable organisation also brings valuable insight into community connection, leadership, partnerships, fundraising and growing a kaupapa from the ground up.
Sam understands that the outdoors can be much more than a pastime. It can provide connection, purpose, escape and a place where people can find themselves again. He is proud to bring that perspective to MentalHunts and help build a community where people feel connected, supported and comfortable talking about their mental wellbeing.”

Welcome to the team, Sam!🤝
