A lone male Whio could mean one of two things:

A) It’s a young male waiting to set up its territory.

B) It’s a mature male guarding a nest of eggs that are due to hatch any day now!!!

What is your guess?

Seasons change and so the smelt patterns do too .
If you’re not changing up your colours you’ll be missing out on catching trout , just like fly fishing . Match the hatch , soft baits spin fish is the same , don’t expect results doing the same thing over and over.
Why not try something new 💙👍🏼

Soon we will decide the future of our government for the next three years. How we govern, run and design our food system. It’s something that affects every single one of us on a daily basis.

Good food that keeps us well, accessed in a way that reflects our agency and choice and regenerates our natural world to ensure abundance for our children and all future generations, should not be up for political debate - but here we are.

This political forum is where we bring the conversation into one room.
Join us for a cross-party discussion on where our political parties actually stand on food, and what they’re prepared to do about it.

Friday 16 October, 4:30pm - 6:00pm
Auckland University of Technology, WG Building, Wellesley St, Auckland CBD. @autuni

The speakers joining us will include:
Chloe Swarbrick - Green Party @chloe.swarbrick @nzgreenparty
David Wilson - NZ First Party @newzealandfirst
Romeo Tevaga - Opportunity Party @romeoforopportunity @opportunity_nz
Greg Fleming - National Party @gflemingnational @nznationalparty
Naisi Chen - Labour Party @naisichen_ @nzlabour

In November, we’re voting for kai. Come join us and be part of the conversation.

🧠 PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS 🌲

We all know that being outside “makes us feel good.” But I started wondering why — what’s actually happening in our bodies that creates that feeling? I dug into the scientific research on the subject. We’re spending more time indoors and on screens than any generation before us — and our brains are paying for it. Here’s what the research actually says about stepping outside (swipe through, then read the caption under each slide for a detailed breakdown).

None of this needs a summit or a two-week trip. Even 20 minutes outside moves the needle. Especially here in New Zealand; we are fortunate to have an abundance of trails and hikes for all levels of experience. With spring weather slowly rearing its head, get ready to make the best of what nature has to offer and get a complimentary therapy session while you're at it!🇳🇿

Save this for the next time you “don’t have time” to go outside ⛰️

1️⃣ OVERTHINKING CALMS DOWN
A Stanford study had participants take a 90-minute walk either through nature or along a busy urban street. The nature group reported less rumination (that loop of stuck, repetitive negative thinking) and showed reduced activity in a brain region linked to depression risk. The urban group showed no such change — same duration, same effort, different environment. This region (the subgenual prefrontal cortex) is tied to self-focused, withdrawn thinking in both depressed and healthy people, so the researchers see this as one concrete pathway connecting nature access to mental health, not just a mood boost with no mechanism behind it.

2️⃣ STRESS DROPS MEASURABLY
A meta-analysis pooling 31 studies and over 1,800 participants found that time in natural environments was linked to measurably lower cortisol (your main stress hormone) and lower blood pressure, compared to time spent in urban or indoor settings. The studies used physical stress markers like salivary cortisol and heart rate variability rather than just self-reported mood, which is part of why the finding carries we

Yesterday legendary @sam_the_trap_man visited our OG foodtruck with his family and left us this beautiful review ♥️🥩🍔🍟 He’s a fan of Marty’s from our foodtruck beginnings.

Foodtruck has done first Friday and Saturday with some good evening dinner rushes, so happy to see dinners back at the foodtruck, AirNZ staff, people calling in, hanging out at picnic tables, picking up takeaways for a fam. 🙏

Next up in our Meet the Team series is Sam Gibson. @sam_the_trap_man

From being a guest on our MentalHunts YouTube channel to now becoming one of our newest trustees, With his own lived experience and a genuine passion for helping others, we’re stoked to have Sam on the team.

“Sam Gibson, better known as Sam the Trap Man, is a bushman, hunter, trapper, conservationist, author and storyteller who has spent much of his life outdoors. Growing up in the Waioweka, Sam found his place in the bush through hunting, fishing and trapping, and has spoken openly about how being outdoors provided a place where he could thrive when traditional environments weren’t always the right fit for him. That lived experience has shaped his strong belief in the value of connection, purpose and belonging.

Sam is also the founder and Co-Chair of Eastern Whio Link, a hunter and fisherman-led conservation project he helped establish to restore whio (blue duck) populations in the Waioweka. What began with a small group of hunters and four remaining breeding pairs has grown into a registered charitable trust involving volunteers, tangata whenua, landowners and conservation organisations, with the project achieving significant increases in whio numbers while expanding its work to protect other native species.

As a Trustee of MentalHunts, Sam brings a unique combination of lived experience, deep outdoor knowledge, conservation leadership and an authentic connection with hunting and rural communities. His experience building Eastern Whio Link from an idea into a functioning charitable organisation also brings valuable insight into community connection, leadership, partnerships, fundraising and growing a kaupapa from the ground up.
Sam understands that the outdoors can be much more than a pastime. It can provide connection, purpose, escape and a place where people can find themselves again. He is proud to bring that perspective to MentalHunts and help build a community where people feel connected, supported and comfortable talking about their mental wellbeing.”

Welcome to the team, Sam!🤝
