I never shared the full versions of my music videos from the “A Candle On A Busy Street” project on socials—so, Mona Lisa!💌

Whenever I write a song, visuals are the first thing that comes to mind…not production, or socials, but how does the song look in my brain space and feel in my body.

When I started to visualize “Mona Lisa” I knew I wanted to feature other famous works of art and create a world where the characters came to life out of their golden cells and untouchable identities.

Soooo — we’ve got the Mona Lisa (big wow), the Girl with the Pearl Earring (played by emma!), the Desperate Man (easton — my cowriter and frame-punching actor), and a modern-day American Gothic by my favorite’s joy and tim!

I worked with the ever amazing @pennykapa on this video — she shot and we co-directed, planning out scene-by-scene and filming in her basement. It was the best time and I adore her.

As an indie artist, I have learned the magic of turnip green, spray painting frames, and how to ball on a budget.

had the most mystical magical week learning every 7-10 year olds favorite songs and reminding myself of how beautiful and precious girlhood is.

Grateful for the most fun camp planned by the @culturalartsalliance — truly always outdo themselves and this was the most special time.

:: ABOUT THE MUSIC ::

“Turning The Tables”

Emotions are hard, but this one really lets it go. “Turning the Tables” touches the height of righteous anger when it comes to navigating faith and justice in our American culture–this song is a call-out for compassion.

“Mona Lisa”

“Mona Lisa” came after a conversation with a Parisian Louvre tour guide on my 21st birthday, who said the painting became famous “because she was stolen.” In 1911, the Mona Lisa was gone for 24 hours and nobody noticed—when they finally did, every news outlet frantically caught on. That felt familiar. In Nashville, I work at Thistle Farms, a nonprofit that serves women survivors of human trafficking–and the idea that your past is your identity is a hard reality. “Mona Lisa” offers a better word–that we are worth more than any title or label.

“Waiting Room”

This song fell from the sky in less than an hour. I lost my nephew on December 7th, 2022, and my co-writer, Jack Henry Campbell, and I wrote this just two months after. I have lived a lot of my life avoiding emotions, and this song was born from a kind of cosmic intervention saying, “Sammi, you can’t do that anymore. You have to feel – otherwise, how will you and your family heal from this?” This one is for the real questions we ask, the answers we’ll never have, and the quiet hope that a miracle is coming – it just may not look the way we imagine.

last spring I took my film camera out to one of my favorite places in all of nashville, the Scarritt Bennett.

I remember the first time I came here right before I studied abroad in London—I was looking for somewhere that didn’t feel like the city and I lived on 15th ave at the time and stumbled upon it on an afternoon walk. the greenery and cathedrals felt like a quiet embrace and a much needed resting stop. then I went to London and was equally floored by reverent architectural greatness (like how??? amazing.)

truly springtime and cherry blossoms are such a mixed bag. tornados and unexpected weather only to bloom these unworldly beauties. the song playing overtop is “cherry blossoms” by @andysquyres and one that I’ve played and played and played to remind myself of the God of the unseen and the seen. how he cares for the tiny white flowers because he cares for me!
