POSTS STORIES REELS

✨Hi again to all my friends and to my new followers, I thought it was time to introduce myself. 🩷

I have always loved colour and I’m endlessly curious about the shapes and patterns in everyday things.

My paintings have evolved quite a bit over the years, but I still get just as excited when something unexpected happens on the canvas!

And speaking of new things…my solo show “Gathered Light”, opens tomorrow, October 16 on @artwrk.ca

A big hello to those of you who are new here, and thank you to everyone who’s been following along. I’m so happy to have you here.

How to screw up a perfectly good painting !!!!

I didn’t like the way the lemons looked like they were floating….. so I totally painted them out and completely lost the original freshness of the painting….

No point in trying to bring it back so I made some big changes and some little ones!

A very long video shortened to 30 seconds….

I’m still not sure but I won’t be taking away the lemons this time!

I love this post by Amanda Ketterer!🩷
@amandakettererart

As an artist, I sometimes take myself in my work far too seriously.

I get caught up in trying to make a painting work, making decisions, questioning them, and forgetting one of the reasons I started painting in the first place! The sheer pleasure of creating….

Amanda‘s words and her accompanying blog were such a good reminder.

I need to play more, embrace the unexpected, try things without worrying about what the outcome will be and most of all I need to remember how lucky I am to walk into my studio every day and do something I really love!

This monthlong sketchbook challenge was exactly the reminder I needed, now I need to continue and take all that playfulness and curiosity with me!

Happy Friday xx

I have learned so much about myself and my creative process over the past 30 days through the 303030 sketchbook challenge.

Every day, the brilliant @andrealopezgallery
@nancycloonan
@aimeebonhamart
give the participating artists a new prompt.
It might be making a particular mark, painting with a non-dominant hand, working on a different surface, or anyone of 27 other ideas designed to get us thinking differently.

I’ve always sketched, somewhat sporadically, but this time I kept to it! all 30 days! and I decided to work on individual pieces of paper, not in a sketchbook. This gave me the freedom to work bigger and bolder and without expectations. I could always throw it out if it didn’t work out (😅interesting)…
And something happened, new ideas started showing up, and for some reason I kept making chairs. That’s what I loved most about this challenge. Giving myself permission to experiment without worrying about the outcome.

So here they are the seven chairs that appeared along the way…Who knew I’d start painting chairs!!!!

This post is mostly a love letter to those three women who started the @303030sketchbookproject. Thank you so much for putting in all the time and effort to help out this group throughout the month. For your encouragement, your lovely comments, sharing our work, and creating a little community of like-minded artists.

I thought I’d bring the whole collection together in one place for you to see.
Each painting began with something different. A colour I wanted to explore, a familiar shape, or simply an idea that stayed with me.

It’s been such a pleasure sharing this new body of work with you, and I hope you’ve enjoyed discovering it as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it.

Gathered light is on @artwrk.ca October 30.

Take your time, take a look, perhaps there’s one that speaks to you….

Have you ever fallen in love with a piece of art?💙

Not because it matches your decor or because you have the perfect spot for it,but because it just haunts you.

Maybe it’s the colours, maybe it’s the shapes, maybe it’s just the way it looks in your head and in your heart.

When someone connects with a painting, it’s just magic!

Magic for the artist because someone connected with what they were feeling when they painted it, and magic for the person who gets to hang it in their space and live with it.

Whether it matches your decor or not😉!

Has that ever happened to you?

Colour mixing is my secret sauce!

People often ask me how I get my colours to work so well together.
The answer is pretty simple! I spend a lot of time mixing.

I love starting with a limited pallette and seeing just how many colours I can create.

I have learned that it’s the quieter more muted colors that allow the stronger ones to sing.

For me, there’s no shortcut to understanding colour. You have to spend the time to mix it….
Experiment and keep looking!
There’s always something new to discover…

Do you love colour as much as I do?

Day 26 of the @303030sketchbookproject and I realized I have been so busy promoting my online show with artwrk.ca that I haven’t posted anything that I’ve been doing for the last little while.

So day 26! The prompt was to pick something that we really liked from the last three weeks and rework it. I really liked painting on a different substrate and so that’s the prompt I chose for today.

I used some brown paper packaging, some cardboard and some tissue paper as my base.

I’ve been playing with chairs during this past three weeks and so today another chair appeared. I hope you like it!

I’ll show more projects in the next coming days….

Thanks for the great prompts

I don’t always cover my tracks….

I love seeing traces of past layers in my paintings. Sometimes I deliberately bring them back to the surface other times they’re simply left behind as the painting evolves.

A glimpse of an earlier colour, part of a layer left visible because it adds interest, or a little paint removed to bring texture and movement into a quiet area.

It’s all part of those ongoing conversations between my brush and me. A little back-and-forth, adding something new, taking something away, and seeing where it leads me.

For me, it’s these layers and traces that make a painting so interesting to look at up close. They hold a bit of my process, and that’s what’s so personal to me.

I love the idea that when you live with a painting, these little details keep revealing themselves, giving you something new to discover every day.

That’s the magic of painting!

Things I gather…..vessels and branches….

I keep coming back to these two shapes in my paintings. I love the contrast between them.

Vessels feel grounded and still, while branches reach upward bringing movement and a sense of freedom.

I love the way they work together. The solid quiet shapes of the vessels against the loose wandering lines of the branches. And I love playing with the spaces in between.

Those spaces become just as interesting to me as the objects themselves.

That’s part of my exploration, something to discover in the familiar.

My show, “Gathered Light” is extended until October 30 on @artwrk.ca
