Meet our resident bookshop cat Charlie!
He’s had a lot of new visitors recently so we thought we’d reintroduce him with some FAQs (swipe to see) and a few guidelines.
We love that you love him as much as we do! He’s a very chill (read: lazy) cat that is used to his adoring fans, however we do have to ask that you respect him. He loves being pet around his head and under his chin, he loves a good sniff, but his back gets a bit sensitive and we ask that you do not pick him up, kiss him, or pull on his tail.
If he’s on his throne you are welcome to approach him for a lil pet, but if he’s behind the desk please respect his (and the staff’s) personal space.
We hope to see you in-store soon!

Since we’re entirely second hand, it’s harder than you think to get and keep copies of Sappho’s poetry on our shelves, so we’ve finally bloody gone and gotten some shiny new copies of If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho, translated by Anne Carson, just for you!
Available in store now for $30, you can even get your copy embossed or stamped so you always remember your time with us 💕

🔔Merch alert! We’re super excited to bring you our very own Sappho-branded reusable coffee cups and water bottles, available in-store now!
Both are made of double-walled stainless steel that will keep your cold drinks cold or your hot drinks hot, without worrying about them leaking in your bag and all over your precious books.
The coffee cup holds 340ml and is available for $45.
The water bottle holds 500ml and is available for $38.
Beysis is a local, women-owned business that has produced these sleek, high-quality tumblers and bottles for us, and we can’t wait to work with them again!

We’re SO excited to announce our very first event, Sapphoween! This will be the first installation of our recurring event Sappho Social, taking over the gorgeous @sapphobooks this 25 October. 👻🎃👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩✨

Sappho Social is a new social night for sapphics, lesbians, queer and FLINTA+ folks to enjoy a relaxed night out, meet some new pals, and generally get amongst the revelry.

From 5-10pm the bar will be serving drinks and tapas, plus we’ll have a lolly bar for a little trick-or-treating, because obviously adults deserve Halloween treats too. 👻

Costumes are encouraged but not required!

Troy Wong is an Australian poet born to Singaporean parents. His poems, written on unceded Dharug and Gadigal land, have appeared in Antipodes, Australian Book Review, Australian Poetry Journal, Griffith Review, The Guardian, and elsewhere. He was shortlisted in the 2026 Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize and won the 2025 Nomad Review Poetry Prize. Off the page and on the stage, he is the founder and creative director of Bread & Butter Poetry Slam, the Inner West's biggest monthly poetry event. Three Durians is his first book.

Eileen Chong is a Sydney poet who was born in Singapore of Hokkien, Hakka and Peranakan descent. She is the author of eleven books. She is the 2025 recipient of the Shanghai Western Sydney Writing Fellowship and a 2026 BR Whiting Studio Residency in Rome. Her most recent book is We Speak of Flowers (UQP, 2025). She lives and works on unceded Gadigal land.

Antoinette Luu is a Vietnamese-Australian writer practising in south-west Sydney. Her poetry reconciles life in the diaspora, and how this life is at once burgeoning, threatened, loving, complicit and lived on unceded Darug land. Antoinette is a Projects Officer at the Bankstown Poetry Slam and was a four-time finalist for their National Youth Poetry Slam. She is part of the poetic quartet, After All, who won the 2025 Grand Slam at the Sydney Opera House, and was a senior editor for the UNSWeetened Literary Journal.
