The name Brownie suggests a certain lifestyle. Soft. Cozy. Perhaps served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Absolutely no cardio.

Unfortunately, nobody explained this to Brownie.

Brownie is a three-year-old Queensland Heeler/Australian Kelpie mix at our Santa Barbara Campus who wakes up every morning ready to DO SOMETHING. A walk? Excellent. Fetch? Obviously. A little training session? He’s listening. An adventure? Get your shoes. Another round of fetch? He cannot believe you even had to ask.

This attentive, energetic guy is looking for an active home that will give both his brain and his body plenty to do. You don’t need to be an ultramarathoner. You don’t need a hydration vest, a GPS watch, or one of those alarming little packets of running goo. Brownie just wants a family that enjoys getting out, playing, exploring, and keeping busy together. He’s been crate trained in the past and would do best in a home without cats.

In conclusion, Brownie is less “dessert after dinner” and more “WE’VE GOT DAYLIGHT, PEOPLE, LET’S MOVE.”

We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays.

At the edge of the ordinary world, where the light turns golden and the shadows grow long, there is a little cat named Cali waiting for the story to begin.

Cali is a five-month-old kitten at our Santa Barbara Campus, with amber eyes, a coat that looks painted in candlelight, and the quiet manner of someone who knows perfectly well that magic is real but sees no reason to make a spectacle of it. She is sweet and shy, the sort of kitten who may watch from a safe distance at first, gathering her courage and deciding whether you can be trusted with whatever secrets kittens keep.

There are no grand illusions required to win her over. Just patience, gentleness, and enough time for Cali to discover that your presence means something good. And perhaps that is the best kind of magic anyway: the slow transformation of a stranger into someone familiar, a cautious hello into a friendship, and an unfamiliar place into home.

Cali is waiting at our Santa Barbara Campus. The door is open. The lights are glowing. All that remains is to step inside.

We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays.

North County pet owners, this one is for you: spay or neuter your cat or dog for FREE.

For the next six months, Santa Barbara Humane is covering the full cost of spay and neuter surgeries for pets belonging to North County residents. No discount to calculate. No coupon code. No surgery fee. Just an opportunity to get important veterinary care for your pet at no cost.

Appointments are available at our Santa Maria Veterinary Clinic and through our Mobile Veterinary Unit. Spaying and neutering can help protect pets from certain cancers and infections, prevent unplanned litters, and help keep more animals out of local shelters.

If you live in Santa Maria, Orcutt, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Vandenberg Village, Mission Hills, Los Alamos, Buellton, Solvang, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Ballard, Casmalia, Garey, Sisquoc, Cuyama, New Cuyama, or Ventucopa, your pet may be eligible.

Don’t put this one on the “I’ll get around to it” list. Appointments are required, and you can schedule yours now at sbhumane.org/clinic for our Santa Maria Veterinary Clinic or sbhumane.org/mobile for our Mobile Veterinary Unit.

Being a shy kitten is difficult because everyone keeps coming up to you and saying things like, “Ohhhhh, are you shy?”

Yes. That’s why Peter was over there, in the corner.

Peter is three months old and available at our Santa Maria Campus, and he is a very sweet little guy who takes some time to warm up to new people. Which is honestly a healthy instinct. Peter doesn’t know you. You could be anybody. You could be a perfectly lovely person coming to adopt a kitten, or you could be someone who wants to tell him about cryptocurrency. He has no way of knowing.

So Peter proceeds cautiously. He watches. He thinks. He gathers evidence. And once he decides you seem all right, this gentle little kitten starts coming out of his shell. Suddenly you’re getting to know Peter. And now Peter likes you. And congratulations, you have passed a background check administered entirely by a three-month-old cat.

We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays.

HELP! We need somebody! HELP! Not just anybody! HELP! We need somebody to adopt these puppies because BEATLEMANIA HAS GOTTEN COMPLETELY OUT OF HAND.

In honor of this Saturday’s Beatles Tribute Concert benefiting Santa Barbara Humane, we’ve assembled the Fab Four. Plus two. We’re rewriting music history, okay? Jude, Ringo, Lovely Rita, Lennon, Rocky Raccoon, and Mr. Kite are two-month-old Shepherd puppies at our Santa Barbara Campus, and their arrival has already caused widespread hysteria. Fans are screaming. Critics are calling them the most important musical act since The Beatles. None of them can play an instrument. Ringo has been asked to leave three recording studios.

Their debut album, Sgt. Puppy’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, features instant classics like “I Want to Hold Your Paw,” “Eight Days a Woof,” and the deeply experimental 47-minute track “Something Is Happening in the Kitchen.” Rolling Stone has called it “an album.” We anticipate a world tour as soon as everyone finishes their vaccinations.

Come see these future legends at our Santa Barbara Campus, and don’t forget to celebrate the ORIGINAL Fab Four at the Beatles Tribute Concert this Saturday, October 17, benefiting Santa Barbara Humane!

We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays.

She’s got it. Yeah, baby, she’s got it. What exactly has she got? Toys. Little eyebrow dots. Puppy enthusiasm. A frankly unreasonable amount of charisma for someone who has been alive for four months.

Venus is our four-month-old Pit Bull puppy at the Santa Maria Campus, and she is your Venus, she is your fire, your desire, your tiny black-and-tan goddess who would very much like to know what you’re holding and whether she can play with it. She’s playful, she’s learning to feel comfortable with new people, and she has lived around small children and reportedly did well.

Her weapons are her crystal eyes, making every man mad. And every woman. And probably several Santa Barbara Humane employees. Look at those things. Those are weapons-grade puppy eyes. Bananarama tried to warn us.

Venus is still a puppy, so she’ll need basic training as she grows. But she’s got it. Yeah, baby, she’s got it. And if what YOU desire is an adorable puppy with magnificent eyebrows, we would argue the song has been pointing you toward our Santa Maria Campus since 1986.

We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays at both campuses.

We’re not saying the original Alvin was secretly replaced. We’re just saying you should look at the evidence.

For decades, the public has been led to believe that Alvin, frontman of The Chipmunks, is a chipmunk. And yet five-year-old Alvin currently resides at our Santa Barbara Campus, is quite clearly a cat, and answers to the same name. Coincidence? That’s what they want you to think.

Consider the clues. Original Alvin wore a red shirt with a giant “A.” New Alvin has a white chest shaped vaguely like something if you stare at it long enough. Original Alvin sang in an unusually high voice. New Alvin also makes noises. Original Alvin was known for causing trouble. New Alvin is playful. WAKE UP, PEOPLE.

Simon and Theodore have refused to comment. Dave insists Alvin has “always been a chipmunk,” which frankly sounds exactly like something a man involved in a decades-long entertainment-industry cover-up would say.

What we can confirm is that Alvin is playful, cuddly, and loving, although he can be shy when meeting someone new. We can neither confirm nor deny that he has been secretly fronting The Chipmunks for years.

The truth is out there. And apparently, it’s available for adoption.

We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays.

Opal has been informed that she is a “staff favorite,” and unfortunately it has gone directly to her head.

This one-year-old Pit Bull at our Santa Barbara Campus now believes she has a reserved parking space, final approval on the staff schedule, and the authority to call meetings that could have been emails. At a petite 45 pounds, Opal is technically middle management-sized, but she has somehow crammed an executive-level amount of personality into that compact frame. She’s playful, ridiculously sweet, and seems to approach every interaction like she has just spotted her favorite coworker returning from a six-month sabbatical.

We would like to be clear that staff favoritism is frowned upon. We would also like to be clear that LOOK AT HER FACE. We are only human. There are policies, and then there is Opal.

Opal is available for adoption now at our Santa Barbara Campus. We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays.

The National Weather Service has issued a Kitten Advisory for the Central Coast area after radar detected a large, extremely fluffy system moving through the area.

Current models show widespread kitten activity, with scattered tabbies developing throughout the morning and a strong possibility of tiny paws by midday. Conditions may become increasingly adorable as the day continues, particularly around our Santa Barbara and Santa Maria Campuses. Meteorologists are also tracking several small disturbances that appear to be chasing a crinkle ball across the Doppler radar.

Residents are advised to prepare accordingly. Secure all shoelaces, open the curtains for optimal sunbeam access, and remain alert for sudden lap accumulation. If you encounter a kitten, do not attempt to outrun it. They are surprisingly fast and have already calculated your weaknesses.

Forecast confidence remains high, although predicting exactly where individual kittens will be located is best left to sbhumane.org. Head to our website to learn more about our available kittens, including which kitten is at which campus.

We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays at both campuses.

The penny has been discontinued after more than 200 years, and frankly, Penny is handling the news with incredible grace.

This three-month-old kitten at our Santa Maria Campus could be bitter. She could be demanding answers from the U.S. Mint. She could be standing outside the Treasury Department yelling, “WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?” Instead, Penny has chosen to focus on her second career: being extremely cute. She’s sweet, playful, and has the kind of face that suggests she has never paid for anything in her life.

And maybe it’s time we all moved on. Stop digging around in the cup holder for loose change. Start investing in assets you can actually cuddle. The future isn’t pennies. The future is Penny.

Penny is available for adoption now at our Santa Maria Campus. We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day except Wednesdays.

STEP ASIDE, STEPHEN AMELL. There’s a new Arrow in town, and this one weighs considerably less, has significantly bigger ears, and will absolutely not be doing the salmon ladder.

The CW’s Arrow is back with a bold new reboot starring Arrow, a one-year-old Chihuahua from our Santa Maria Campus. Gone is the brooding billionaire vigilante. Gone are the complicated flashbacks. Gone are the eight seasons of trying to remember who knows whose secret identity. This Arrow is playful, spunky, energetic, and mostly interested in chasing toys and exploring whatever happens to be over there.

Critics are already calling the casting “a surprising departure from the source material” and “wait, is that just a Chihuahua?” Yes. Yes, it is. And frankly, Star City has never been safer.

Arrow is currently accepting applications for a new supporting cast. No archery experience required. We are open for adoptions from 12 to 4:30 PM every day of the week except Wednesdays.

This #SuccessStorySunday, we’re raising a glass to everyone who made Whiskers Under the Moon a night to remember.

A few weeks ago, we put on our boots, transformed our Santa Barbara Campus, and welcomed our community for an evening under the stars. Thanks to our guests, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community partners, the gala raised more than $370,000 to support the animals and families we serve.

There was live music, dancing, incredible generosity, and a bidding war over the December calendar page that got very serious. But the best part comes after the party. Every dollar raised helps make adoption, training, veterinary care, the Pet Food Pantry, and so much more possible throughout the year.

To everyone who helped make Whiskers Under the Moon such a success: thank you. This success story belongs to you.
