✨ Portland Zine Symposium! ✨

Portland's biggest annual paper-lovin' fest is celebrating its 26th year this weekend. We've tabled at PZS since 2015 or 2016, it's hard to remember exactly. The important thing is that it's a gathering of like-minded folks doing exploring every possible way that you can make paper into art objects and information dissemination tools. Every year it's bigger, every year there are more people from all around the continent coming to Portland to celebrate zine culture.

This year @ciellecharron & @rorsjarckson are holding down the Secret Room table on Saturday from 11-5pm with a bunch of comix alongside dozens of friends from all over the country. Saturday only for us this year — it's a heck of a lineup!

Today is the GRAND OPENING of The Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design at @portlandstate - from 5-8pm tonight we'll be hanging out in the publication studio live printing with the mobile risograph photobooth!

Cielle is an alumni of PSU's graphic design program and has taught on and off in the design department alongside our friend Kate Bingaman-Burt and a ton of other brilliant artists/designers over the years. It's an honor to return for this momentous occasion to come have fun with the RISO - this new building has been in the works for *years* and it felt pretty surreal to get to tour it recently.

The publication studio is obviously very close to our hearts but more than anything we're excited to see what access to all of these fantastic tools and information does for the small press scene in Portland. The easier it is to realize your project, the more likely it is to get printed, trimmed, and shared with the world. So excited to see what comes outta here and to cross paths with students bringing new ideas to the zine scene here.

Okay, see you tonight! taken in Jordan Schnitzer School of Art, Art History & Design at PSU by @secretroompress

Material Dimensions Part Three debuts November 7 at @shortrunseattle comic festival! Published by the friendliest Riso pros in the biz @secretroompress

In this issue, the chirbs continue to make discoveries in this strange new land. Why are the local chirbs so upset? It seems like something BIG could happen soon…

I had a lot of fun drawing this one and I think it shows in the art. There’s a lot of action, some new environments, and (as usual) a lot of nonstandard comic panels🤙

Back from our trip to Los Angeles for the 2026 RISO Art & Zine Festival. So many good things to say about our experience tabling in California for the first time ever, despite almost 8 years of publishing comix & art books. Thanks to @natandrewson for inviting us to table at RAZ this year and all of the fun people we got to spend time with.
Finally got to meet @remoteryan and @ryancecil in person after years of crossing paths online, hung out with the pals in @d.r.y.comics who are putting out amazing work all the time, crashed with both @in_the_afterhours and @zinehug, ate a bunch of hotdogs, hung out with the folks at @theshq, went on an LA river birdwatching-turned-spiderwatching walk with the talented and friendly @quinnecl and @yoyorobot... and to top it all off we saw Haruomi Hosono LIVE IN CONCERT at the Greek Theater.
Unbelievable.
Didn't take enough photos because we were too busy wandering and exploring and chatting the whole dang time.
We want to visit LA more often, we had a fantastic time.
Thanks, everybody! Feeling very appreciative of the comix/animation community and all the friendly folks in it. taken in Los Angeles, California by @secretroompress

RISO Art & Zine Fest 2026 at @gallerynucleus
Saturday/Sunday 11-5 in Alhambra, CA
All risograph all fun all new books! It’s our first time tabling in Los Angeles so everything on our table is new in a sense. Feels nice to finally make it down here, surrounded by friends and fellow RISO nerds, there’s an astounding amount of talent in this room. Overwhelming, in fact!
Today’s the first day we’re tabling with our newest book, Nuovaluna by @rebeccavalente_illustra, which also releases next week at @lustrfestival in Prague. Very proud of this book! Okay, that’s it for now, we’re officially open over here!
If you have LA suggestions, we’re in town til Wednesday afternoon and don’t have many plans - drop a comment! 💛

✨𝒩𝐸𝒲 𝐵𝒪𝒪𝒦✨
ɴᴜᴏᴠᴀʟᴜɴᴀ ʙʏ ʀᴇʙᴇᴄᴄᴀ ᴠᴀʟᴇɴᴛᴇ
September 2026, Secret Room Press

👀 ᴅᴏᴜʙʟᴇ-ᴅᴇʙᴜᴛ ᴅᴀᴛᴇꜱ 👀
9/19-20 - publisher Secret Room Press at Risograph Art & Zine Fest at @gallerynucleus (Alhambra, United States)

9/24-30 - cartoonist Rebecca Valente (@rebeccavalente_illustra) at @LUSTRfestival (Holešovická Tržnice, Prague)

We met Rebecca at @trevisocomicbookfestival in Northern Italy in 2025. We were immediately taken with her art, with its colorful, loose linework, and spectacular illustrations! We wanted a chance to pitch her on a future project and picked up all of Rebecca’s books we could. By the end of the festival, we'd chatted about doing something together and almost exactly 1 year later, Rebecca’s fantastic 50-page comic Nuovaluna, a phenomenal work balancing melancholy, sweetness, and the tragicomedy of life, is here! -𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀

𝙰𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝙽𝚞𝚘𝚟𝚊𝚕𝚞𝚗𝚊
When Pallina and Bibi meet together on the 15th anniversary of their friend Luna’s death, Bibi’s strange new friend Nora suggests they summon Luna’s spirit into a makeshift body made of bread. A chance for closure. The night Luna died, the three friends were supposed to see New Moon in the theater together. They’ve never seen that movie… until now.

56 pages, printed on a Risograph MZ790 in Brown, Sunflower, Aqua, Red, Black, Yellow, and Fluorescent Pink

𝙰𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚁𝚎𝚋𝚎𝚌𝚌𝚊 𝚅𝚊𝚕𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚎
Rebecca Valente is an illustrator, author, comic artist, painter, and multidisciplinary artist born in Asti (Italy), living between Turin and her home in the woods. She teaches Illustration in the master’s program at the Scuola Internazionale di Comics di Torino. Her work depicts nature, living things, smelly, organic, and joyful matters, but also death and other scary things. Rebecca works with screen printing and risography through Zanna Dura workshop, RFI gallery, Spazio Muffa, Secret Room Press, and more. Her first graphic novel La Regina Formica and an illustrated poetry book Il Regno di Zirconi come out this Autumn from NuevoSido (for their Tana Series). Nuovaluna is Rebecca’s first book published in the United States.

Absolutely wonderful illustration by @rorsjarckson for the @willametteweek Fall Arts Guide. Portland has an incredible movie theater scene but it’s really cool to see the often underrated Moreland Theater in the spotlight here.
Seen a lot of movies here over the years, and a lot of friends, too. taken in Moreland Theater by @secretroompress

An interesting fella on today’s @paddlers_coffee calendar! Sneaking around day, you say? A day of secret goings on, perhaps?

We’ve been fans of Raf Spielman’s art forever and the once-a-day calendar he illustrates is a sort of small meditation each morning that kicks off our day alongside coffee and a record. We worked with him on the Secret Room shop shirt and are practically neighbors on Division. Within walking distance anyway.

Imagine our delight and surprise at seeing this lil easter egg to kick off the weekend. by @secretroompress

Something exciting was percolating in the Latvian music scene in the 1980s.

Compiled by geographer and music enthusiast Austin Charron, this compilation is an exploration of the diverse range of styles that sketch a broad and balanced portrait of Latvian pop music’s progressive edge during a period of great social and political transformation. Featuring 15 selections across a decade of blossoming creativity, this mixtape also includes an essay by Charron exploring how Latvia’s music scene found itself thriving.
