POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Hi, 🙋🏾‍♀️

I'm Sharmay 😊

✨ I enjoy all forms of creativity, especially writing. I completed 1387 consecutive days of creating a new piece of poetry, visual art, stop motion animations, jewellery, short stories, etc., between 2017 - 2020.

✨ I love books (reading, collecting and donating, sometimes even sniffing them)! My favourite book quote is, "silflay hraka, you embleer rah!" IYKYK 😁

✨ If I could only use 3 words to describe myself, I'd pick calm, introverted and unconventional.

✨ I'm currently working on my next writing project/s, in pursuit of my childhood dream of becoming a bestselling author.

✨ My poetry collection Be The Uplifter is available to buy via the link in my bio.

✨ What do I share here?
What's in my library (posts)
Book reviews (posts)
Random storytimes and amusing things (stories)
Writing-related snippets and updates (posts & stories)

Some new exciting books added to the #Books4Dominica donation pile.

I bought some at the Black British Book Festival and Black Writer's Guild conference

Ps. When I say the library let me have it for free, it was a book in their sale section! Not a lending book! (Hehehe! 😁) by @sharmaymitchell

Let's see how many of the participating @tesco stores I can visit this October to find the Black History Month @jacarandabooks on display.

First stop on the hunt- Rainham, Essex Tesco.

The book stand is present, but it's no where near the rest of the books and I had to ask 2 members of staff before I found one who knew where it was. The member of staff themself said it was an "obscure" place to put books.

I guess the Halloween-themed books are more important than black-authored books?! If anything, the Halloween books were all child-centred material and so would have been more appropriately placed near the children's toys.

I also couldn't find any black-authored books in their regular book section. C'mon, Rainham, Essex Tesco, you can do better than that!
How are we supposed to find the books to buy them if they're no where near the book aisle?

In this week's episode of turning my home into an art gallery, my plain hallway mirror gets a makeover...

This year we venerate 60 years of our beloved Notting Hill Carnival!

We remember Kelso Cochrane.
We remember Claudia Jones.
We remember Rhaune Laslett.
We remember Leslie Palmer.
We remember Russell Henderson.
We remember Sam King.
We remember Duke Vin.

We remember all of the pioneers who were collectively responsible for, and contributed to, the nascence of what has bloomed into the largest carnival in Europe.

If you live in or near Notting Hill, you can't tell me your skin doesn't erupt in delightful goosebumps at this time of year when you see the barriers deposited just beforehand, and you get that,

✨"anticipation of celebration,
elation, intoxication!"✨

because the air is charged with this palpable energy that builds to the most beautiful crescendo.

I lived in and around this part of London for almost 40 years and, although I don't live there anymore, I still get that same electric feeling when entering the carnival route from the Notting Hill end, and you look down and see that,

✨"wet, shimmering mirage of human skin,
of reveller spectator, stranger and kin". ✨

Yes, I mentally recite snippets of my own poetry as I enter carnival!

I wish everyone a wonderful carnival.
Please show gratitude to those who work tirelessly during the year to make it happen, and please respect the history and cultural significance, while you wuk up and dingolay!

See you on the road! ✌🏾🫡

FRIDGE MAGNET POETRY #14

When people you once knew become like strangers.
Sad, but sometimes necessary.

It's time to turn my home into my own private art gallery.

I like to be surrounded by the fruits of my labour, so it will mostly be my own work, which means a lot of labour lies ahead, but that's the fun part! 🙌🏾

Little by little, I'm making my surroundings more magical. ✨
