It’s my season. 🤍

Missing Mum. Missing my cat baby. Missing summer. Feeling all the big feels that come when your birthday is around the corner and Mum isn’t here for it.

But it’s okay to feel sad and happy at the same time. Joy and grief can live side by side.

So I’m heading to NYC to soften my heart.

Walk 143,000 steps. Eat banana pudding. Do some fine dining. Laugh until we cry. Maybe meet my future BF… yes, you read that right. Because why would I date a Brit when I can date a New Yorker? 😉.
(Family group is about to go nuts!)

Take off these soft clothes, get dressed up and for one night only, come out of retired party girl mode. 😂

Dance on the rooftops with my best girls (and try my best not to fall asleep in a corner).

Central Park picnic to watch the season change. 🍂
Cherries from Whole Foods that seep down to the elbows and make me look like a cannibal.
Olipop cherry cola.
Skinny fries.
Brown girls with British accents and my hands adorned with Mehndi obvs, just as my Mama would have expected. 🧿🔥

So many questions about my commitment to Seva.

I grew up with a Mum who had such a strong belief in Shukar and Barkat. She was one of the most giving humans I’ve ever known 🧿 and raised us with a simple belief: if you can, then serve.

There was never a time she wasn’t ready to give, help or support someone. She taught us that service comes in many forms.

For me, it looks like making rotis at my local Gurdwara. Every week, I wear one of my Mum’s dupattas and make rotis by the hundreds. It’s by far my favourite thing to do.

There’s something about Seva that has become deeply healing for me. It reminds me that love doesn’t end when someone is no longer physically beside you. Sometimes it finds new ways to live through you.

And then there are the aunties. The ones who, if I close my eyes for a moment, feel like my Mum could be standing right beside me. The ones who shout, “Biba putar!” when I walk in. 🥹 There’s something so comforting about that familiarity, that warmth, speaking Punjabi and that feeling of home.

Maybe that’s why Seva means so much to me. It connects me back to her, to our values, to faith and to something bigger than myself. It’s not about giving because you have plenty. It’s about giving because you can.

Thank you for instilling this in us, Mama. I’m so grateful for your teachings. 🤍

And then there’s me in the girls’ group chat having a full mental breakdown while simultaneously reminding everyone to stay in the power of God and faith. 😂🫠

Five years since we saw Mum.

Five years since I held her hand, heard her laugh, felt her embrace or ate her food.

I miss you in every moment of every day, and I know I’ll miss you in every moment of every day for the rest of my life.

I wish I’d written down all your recipes 💔

I miss you telling me
“kashni dupatte waliye, munda sadqay tere teh”.
If you were here, I’d ask you which one?! 😂

It has taken me five years to listen to Challa, because if my mum were a song, she would be this one. She was so in love with Gurdas Mann but never admitted it! 😂

My every win, everytime I dance with abandon, everytime I have mehndi on my hands, every gutsy move, every dimply laugh with my head thrown back, every side eye, every time I dig my heels in, every roti I make, every mouth I feed, every quiet meal, every prayer and every act of service — I dedicate to you.

I carry you in all of it. In your light we learnt to love.
