Camping alone in outback Australia ❤️

Astrophotography is about so much more than the photograph. Its about the story, the connections, the lessons. This image holds a night in remote NSW that began with fear and ended with uncomfortable realisations.

Feeling frightened camping alone, I reached out to someone who had not been treating me well, asking him to keep me company. We spoke for a short while and laughed a little, but underneath it all, I felt ashamed that I was trying so hard to be wanted by someone whose treatment had left me in tears more times than I cared to admit.

As a neurodivergent woman, I’ve spent much of my life masking, analysing others and accommodating their needs at the expense of my own wellbeing. Under the stars that night, I reflected on my faith and the person I want to be, and realised it was time for something to change.

I don’t want fear of rejection or loneliness to convince me to abandon my values or keep trying to make someone who does not treat me well to like me.

Protecting your boundaries doesn’t make you cruel. Saying no to one compliment after a hundred insults doesn’t make you unappreciative. You can care about someone while recognising that their presence in your life is hurting you. They don’t have to be a villain for you to step away, but you can’t preserve your wellbeing by continually exposing yourself to someone who lacks empathy.

Recognition is wonderful, but it can last five minutes before fading, leaving us chasing the next five minutes over and over again, like Sisyphus. We can become so focused on the attention of strangers who know nothing about us that we neglect those who genuinely care and, without realising it, miss the boat to Valinor.

I want to live authentically, hold onto my faith and values, and choose to give my love to what is good over what is easiest or most gratifying.

I would rather stand alone, as I did camping in remote NSW, than lose myself trying to be someone I’m not ❤️✨

Milky Way Rising Above Tufas

It’s been a while since I photographed the Milky Way and even longer since I have processed any Milky Way images. I was inspired by my friend @enji_chung to get out there.

The conditions were favorable during my recent trip to the Sierra Nevada: clear skies, early moonset and the final days of a visible galactic core. However, the core would only be visible for just over 30 minutes before sinking behind the mountains.

I am sure I looked like a crazed photographer trying to find the best comp, shifting as the core got lower, etc., etc.

I love Mono Lake and the tufas - they are so unique and interesting! Tufa (tuft, calc-tuff or tophus) is a variety of limestone formed when carbonate minerals precipitate out of water in unheated rivers or lakes.

I’m lagging behind in my Milky Way posts. This is from our weekend adventure in August to Fundy-St. Martins, NB.

I chose this area of the province because of the town’s initiative to qualify the surrounding area for a dark sky designation.

We ran into a bit of a dilemma though. The Fundy Trail Provincial Park has a scenic coastal parkway that runs 30kms through the park. The Trail features 21 stunning views of the cliffs of the Bay of Fundy, and over 35kms of hiking, walking and biking trails. The only issue is the park closes at 8 pm! We talked to a visitor centre employee that said we could park before the entrance gates and walk in. Well that wasn’t going to happen due to safety concerns.

So, this is a composite photograph with the correct orientation of the Milky Way. The foreground was taken later in the afternoon and the Milky Way was captured at the beach in St. Martins 8km away.

If the dark sky committee really wants to register the area between New River Beach and Hopewell Rocks, it would be really great if it could include the Fundy Trail Parkway and its stunning lookouts!

The Harvest Moon will rise tonight as the sun sets. Around this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, the Moon rises at similar times for several evenings. Historically, the extra evening moonlight helped farmers continue harvesting crops after sunset, which is where the name comes from.

Lower Horse Cove

This little beach is located just five minutes down the road from where we were staying in Paradise, NL. In all our years travelling to Paradise, we’ve never visited this little cove, so I didn’t really have a feel for how long the beach was because it was high tide. Next time we visit we will explore the area during low tide.

I tried to capture the rambling brook in the foreground that was flowing out of the woods into the ocean.

This was the only clear night during our visit this year. The night didn’t start out that great though. I had to wait for the clouds to move along.

I think this area is party central, as there were lots of makeshift fire pits scattered around and lots of garbage strewn everywhere, despite a garbage can located near by!

Too bad that the concept of ‘Leave No Trace’ was completely ignored.

Here again is the Heart Nebula, but with a combination of the files from the SeeStar S30Pro and the S50Pro smart telescopes.

IC 1805 Heart Nebula

It took me over 23.5 hrs using the Naztronomy-OSC_PP.py script in Siril to combine 2676 fit files from my S30Pro, and 857 fit files from my S50Pro into one combined stacked file! All files were 30 second exposures, with less than a 5% rejection rate with the S30Pro, and a 0% rejection rate with the S50Pro.

I’m going to try the SeeStar_Preprocessing.ssf script next time to compare the time it takes to combine the two focal lengths.
