Dec. 2024// acrylic box with water and rose petals inside with an image transfer from a scanned 120 film images taken on a Brownie Hawkeye of Dr. Maris Jones. Giving thanks to Yemoja. This piece was selected to be in @ashe_cac 2025 Birthrite exhibition curated by Kennedy Sarrazin. It’ll be up through May 16th, go check it out as well as the other artists pieces celebrating Oshun and Yemoja. A big thank you and appreciation to Maris for sharing this moment with her and allowing me to capture her offerings that day taken in Ashé Cultural Arts Center by @shenlestudio

“For What It’s Worth” created in 2024 in collaboration with and title name by @giudiebrown. This piece is a conversation surrounding the ethics and capitalism of international adoption, specifically to my experience as a Chinese adoptee. Surrounding China’s One Child Policy opening its country up to international adoption in the early 1990’s a demand was created. Thank you to @giudiebrown’s collaboration and inception of the auction and titling of this piece. It was created out of a desire to use my adoption day photograph and a conversation in New York City in 2024. Then developed into an interplay between object and image to tell this story.
Thank you to my parents Elana and Scot, my sister and brother in law Callie and Philippe and my friends Kaitlin, Chelsea, Mia and Lizzie for coming out to the opening. I love you all Thank you to the jury @nevelingartsandculture and @rajivmenon and to the curator @thestellawitcher for creating and bringing together a beautiful multi-medium, multi-perspective representation of the Asian American Diaspora. “Go West” is on exhibit at the @dairyarts until June 29th. With an artist talk I will be participating in on June 10th. taken in Dairy Arts Center by @shenlestudio

Work in progress_Celestial 2025. Celestial was used as a colonial-era descriptor of Chinese people. While not inherently derogatory, its use related to a broader racist trope, “yellow peril”to allude to “otherness” and “exotic” perception by the white people in the West. This term fell out of context and use to name Chinese people and has since been accepted in relation to astronomy and spirituality. This piece lends to both, the use of the word for otherness, creating the colonial pressures toward assimilation but presented in its modern understanding of the word in an ethereal installation. Finding Ads- in 1999 orphanages were required to run newspaper ads for the children in their care. Information on the location where the child was “found” and which orphanage the child was at were provided. As well as, basic identifying information from the orphanages evaluation. For example a child’s birthday, which generally is assigned by the orphanages due to a lack of record. by @shenlestudio

celestial i. _ iteration ii. 2025 Self Portrait projection mapped onto sheer cream fabric, 1x4 frame, red thread and a fan Dark space with projection of a shirtless person with Chinese fabric draped over their face and part of their right side. Portrait is from chest up and person has a scar visible from a past surgery . There’s some movement as the sheer fabric is being fanned for movement by @shenlestudio
