Our annual collaborative residency program is back!

For the next two months, Cemeti Institut is home to five artists in residence — each joining us through different institutional collaborations.

The artist in residence this season:
Shivay La Multiple – France
Nguyen Trinh Thi – Vietnam
Miyu Hosoi – Japan
Widi Asari – Indonesia
Luo Yanze (Justin) – Taiwan

They’ll spend their time in Yogyakarta researching, connecting, and getting to know the city’s vibrant art scene.

We would like to say thank you to all the collaborator institutions: Institute Français Indonesie, Cité Internationale des Art, Natasha Sidharta, SAM Fund for Art and Ecology, Japan Foundation, and Taiwan Art Space Alliance.

Shivay La Multiple, born in 1993, works between Paris, Nouméa in New Caledonia/Kanaky, the digital sphere, and rivers.

In their practice, Shivay La Multiple teaches reason the language of dreams. Through multiple media, they create lines of flight towards unexplored worlds, multiverses, and pluriverses. Like a Möbius strip, their research moves from the global to the visceral, from the macro to the micro, from dreams to reality, and from the physical to the digital. They draw inspiration from the concept of the poetics of relation while remaining influenced by the many places they have travelled through.

During the residency, Shivay La Multiple explores the rivers of Java and the ways in which they connect volcanoes to the ocean, carrying not only water, sediments, and volcanic ash, but also stories, beliefs, memories, and human practices.

Their work has been presented at Tropiques Atrium in Fort-de-France for the exhibition "Hado: The Powers of Water"; at "Festival Nova XXX" in Paris; in "Águas Subterrâneas: Narrativas de Confluências" at Instituto Tomie Ohtake and Frac Angoulême; in "Crossing the water", part of the emerging artists programme of the Lyon Biennale at IAC in Villeurbanne; and through the Kochi Biennale residency programme.

This residency is a collaboration between Cemeti Institute for Art and Society, Institut français d’Indonésie, and the Cité internationale des arts.

Some residencies continue long after the artist has left, through the conversations, collaborations and works they bring into the world.

During her Villa Swagatam residency, Shivay La Multiple (@shivay_la_multiple) developed a practice rooted in riverine ecologies, tracing connections between the Amazon, Africa and South India. Through research, travel and dialogue, her work explored memory, ecology and the movement of water across cultures and landscapes.

The residency culminated in an installation presented at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (December 12, 2025 - March 31, 2026) (@kochibiennale), where these encounters took sculptural form through the figure of the water hyacinth. Bringing together local context with years of research, the project reflected the spirit of exchange that lies at the heart of Villa Swagatam, where artistic practice grows through place, collaboration and shared knowledge.

We are delighted to share the installation of Shivay La Multiple ( @shivay_la_multiple ) , unveiled at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale ( @kochibiennale ) , and which weaves riverine histories, memory and ecology through the figure of the water hyacinth.

Shivay’s residency with the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is the culmination of a special two year cross collaboration that began with the 2024 residency of @sahilravindranaik with the Lyon Biennale ( @biennaledelyon ) and l’Institut d’art contemporain ( @iacvilleurbanne ). At Lyon, Sahil was part of a collective exhibition which featured both international and French artists, which included Shivay as well. Following this experience together, Shivay was selected as the Villa Swagatam laureate for the residency with the Kochi-Muziris Biennale !

Embodying the spirit of reciprocity and cross-cultural exchange, Shivay arrived in Kochi this November to embrace the rich cultural context of South India, to incorporate it in their practice and to share with the audiences of the Biennale their references, collected throughout their trips and research in Africa and South America.

Shivay’s work is on view until 31 March 2026 at Devassy Jose & Sons, Mattancherry.
