Transforming restaurant shell waste into thriving reefs! A @nature_aus project in partnership with @b_alternative hospitality collection 🦪🌊🪸

Reviving Port Phillip Bay’s Oyster Reefs 🦪

Did you know that Angasi oysters once thrived in Port Phillip Bay, playing a vital role in marine ecosystems and providing an important food source for First Nations communities?

Over time, dredging and industrial activities led to the collapse of these oyster reefs, leaving the ecosystem functionally extinct.

Today, thanks to The Nature Conservancy Australia, in partnership with B-Alternative, we’re helping to bring these reefs back to life.

Through the Shuck Don’t Chuck shell recycling program, over 825 tonnes of recycled shell waste have been used to support the restoration of 49 historical reef beds. These restored reefs are essential for improving water quality, boosting biodiversity, and strengthening marine habitats.

🌿 Be part of this circular economy solution:

Oyster Tours Portarlington!
Something exciting is happening beneath the surface. 🦪

Shane has started finding wild native Angasi oysters naturally attaching to those being grown on our farms — an encouraging sign for the future of these once thriving native oyster reefs.

It’s one of the fascinating stories we share on our Native Angasi Oyster Tour.

With only a limited number of departures across November and December, now’s the time to book your spot.

Starting with the Melbourne cup long weekend, we have availability on the Sunday afternoon & Monday morning tour.

Shout out to @nature_aus @shuckdontchuck

Over 13 hectares of shellfish reef restored.
That’s something to celebrate! 🥳🌊

Across Port Phillip Bay and the Gippsland Lakes, reef restoration is bringing vital marine habitat back to life.

And the scale of the challenge is huge: shellfish reefs once covered up to 50% of Port Phillip Bay’s seafloor, while more than 95% of Victoria’s shellfish reefs have been lost.

Through #ShuckDontChuck, oyster, mussel and scallop shells are diverted from landfill and becoming part of a restoration cycle 🦪♻️ supporting the incredible work of @natureaus.

Less waste. More reef. More life below the surface.

Venue Spotlight: SAMESYN, TORQUAY 🦪

Proud supporters of Shuck Don’t Chuck, Samesyn is the kind of venue that proves incredible food and low-waste thinking can absolutely belong on the same plate.

From using rescued food in the kitchen and partnering with local charity @feedmebellarine to operating without a general waste bin on site, sustainability is built into how they do things every day.

Their waste streams are carefully separated through recycling, composting, and mussel and oyster shell recycling with Shuck Don’t Chuck, helping give valuable resources a second life instead of sending them to landfill. ♻️

And none of that attention to sustainability comes at the expense of what lands on the plate. The same care, creativity and attention to detail goes into the food, and the result is genuinely exceptional.

And if you aren’t already inspired, Samesyn’s commitment has just earned some very well-deserved recognition, with founder and chef Graham Jefferies named the 2026 Sustainability Legend at @melbfoodandwine’s Legends and Trailblazers Awards.

Smart, thoughtful and seriously delicious. Well worth a visit.

📍 3/24 Bell St, Torquay VIC 3228

Did you know oysters are a nutritional POWERHOUSE!? 🦪💪

Oysters aren’t just good for our waterways, they pack a pretty impressive punch when it comes to nutritional value too.

If you’re not yet a convert to this tasty little ocean treat, here are a few reasons that might just change your mind…

High in ZINC
Oysters are one of the richest natural sources of zinc, supporting immune function, metabolism and healing.

Packed with high-quality, lean and complete PROTEIN
Containing all nine essential amino acids, while naturally low in fat and calories.

B12 RICH
Helping support healthy nerve function and red blood cell production.

A natural source of OMEGA-3s
Including EPA and DHA, which support heart and brain health.

Full of ANTIOXIDANTS too!
Including DHMBA, a naturally occurring antioxidant being studied for its potential protective effects.

Pretty impressive for one little shellfish 🦪

And the benefits don’t stop there. Oyster shells can be returned to the water to create habitat, help protect shorelines and support reef restoration ♻️

So next time you shuck, don’t chuck! #ShuckDontChuck

Turns out recycling shells for reef restoration is kinda chic… don’t you think? 🦪

From Melbourne restaurants to new reef habitat, Shuck Don’t Chuck - working in partnership with @nature_aus and @b_alternative - is giving oyster, mussel and scallop shells a second life.

Collected. Cured. Reused. Back to the bay.

Kinda chic, actually.

Yesterday’s oysters. Tomorrow’s reefs. 🦪🌊

This World Oyster Day, we’re celebrating the incredible oyster, a powerhouse of nutrition and a powerhouse for our oceans. Just one oyster can filter up to a bathtub of water each day, helping create cleaner water, while oyster reefs provide vital habitat for marine species.

Through Shuck Don’t Chuck, delivered in partnership with The Nature Conservancy (@nature_aus), recycled shells from more than 50 partner venues across Melbourne and the Bellarine have made their way back to the ocean, helping build more than 13 hectares of new shellfish reef habitat across Narrm Narrm (Port Phillip Bay) and the Gippsland Lakes on Gunaikurnai Country.

Thank you to all our partner venues for your ongoing support of this incredibly important program.

Happy World Oyster Day! 🦪
