We’d nudge one another. “Look here, get this.” We’d shake our heads. How could it be that one of the oldest wine-producing cultures in the world was also one of the lesser-known? Over the next two weeks, awe rose and grew into our permanent state.

In the mountainous highlands of Lebanon, our backs arched over ancestral vines, soil filled our every fold, camera batteries drained in what felt like minutes and portable chargers never seemed mobile enough.

The tales of the vintners who motioned us closer extended far beyond the grape-stained pages of our notebooks. Rather than condense their roots, we dreamt up a place, before acquiring a space, where the pace of service would be tuned to the rhythm of their stories.

Here, by way of our own import agency, we’d guide Montrealers to unearth ancient-world wines. We’d see to it that they’d come to know the names of those shaping its new identity, forming its working legacy. We’d poke holes in the hierarchy of wine, strip the bias down to nothingness. We’d hold a round classic next to a daring newcomer.

It came to us on long bus rides zigzagging across terraced slopes, to the chime of alarms set early enough to beat the heat. We didn’t go searching for HENI—it hit us like a freight train, collapsed into our jet-lagged laps and commanded our instant all, tugging at our heart strings immediately, if not sooner.

Yesterday was a fantastic day at the winery. It took some time to secure, but I finally managed to land some stunning berries (big shoutout to @merselwine and @dar.richi for hooking it UP). The Merwah came all the way from Dimane, a village up north that sits about 1,500 meters above sea level.

I’m still undecided, but the Merwah will likely be stepping in for the Viognier in either MAJD or KASHF. For now, I’m leaving the final word to the tanks… we’ll see what they reveal over the next few days.

Gently pressed the semi-carbo Pinot Noir yesterday. It took nearly 10 hours of work with the manual basket press, and I am FEELING IT today, but the result was so so so worth it. This year's WAJD is gonna be special...

Viognier came in today looking extra healthy! We went for a gentle press followed by a short cold-soak maceration to enhance that classic Viognier typicity we all know and love. We’ve got a long day ahead tomorrow, so I’ll report back with updates soon.

Wanted to share a look at the Pinot Noir today; the recent tweaks are paying off, and just look at that brilliant color! With the heat wave we’ve been facing, the fruit would’ve been pushed into dangerous ripening territory, so I’m very glad we made the call to harvest when we did.
