POSTS STORIES REELS

it's a housewarming for our new home @wheat_winewhisky 7pm this wednesday October 28th for @signals_ambient

come check out our cozy new venue, *downstairs* at 284 Smith St Collingwood [ just across the street and down a bit from the old spot ] there's specials at the bar and we cooked up an extra special line-up to celebrate

Izzy Mardin-Weir [ @izzymardinweir ] is a songwriter and electronic music composer who draws on mixed Indonesian heritage to make work based on niche Gamelan software instruments, percussion textures and electronics.

fresh from shows at jibber-jabber in castlemaine and the clan analogue showcase for melbourne fringe, we can't wait to see what they get up to..

Vijay Thillaimuthu [ @xenosine_ ] is an electronic composer/performer and audio-visual artist focussed on
sound synthesis and electromagnetic phenomena, the joyful exploration of electricity and its visceral, transcendental expression as sound, vibration and light.
.. he has presented work everywhere from The Brisbane Powerhouse to the Tokyo Festival of Modular and collaborated with artists ranging from Robin Fox to
Suzanne Ciani, all while teaching and researching at UniMelb and fostering the next gen at MESS.. he's probably going to play something interesting I reckon..

and finally signals co-creator Dan O'Toole [ @morse_code_poetry ] will present new work in collab with naarm sax player Leon Alexander [ @leon_alexander_music ]frontman of Quincoction and street music raconteur..

Just a reminder folks, Signals will be moving to @wheat_winewhisky from now on! So we will see you on the 28th Oct. at 284 Smith St. (downstairs venue) by @signals_ambient

a big announcement and an even bigger line-up this month @signals_ambient 7pm wednesday 30th september..

coming in strong with sydney artist @_tonepoem who uses subtle beating tones, waves of noise, and ringing harmonics to unfold sonic environments that dwell in gradual shifts and reward immersion.. vibes..

@_willebrant is returning to the signals stage in the wake of what is somewhat unbelievably his 36th release for this project..
he'll be debuting "the pilgrim live", an interpretation of the 2025 release "the pilgrim - slowed and reverb".. promising a tunnel of warm, slow and evolving drones, field recordings, manipulated bells and sub frequencies set to a visual narrative..

and finally the woodwind power duo of the moment, naarm's leading looping clarinet artist @clariloops and baroque flute and field recording specialist @meredithbeardmore are topping the bill.. plus, in another exciting first for us, they'll be recording their debut album live before your eyes and ears..

-- aand an important announcement --

with heavy and grateful hearts we're letting our community know that this event will be our last at our cute room upstairs @kentst for the foreseeable future, as they kick off some renovations in the space.. we have a great new spot which we'll share on the night and on this account soon, but meanwhile please come thru this wednesday sept 30th and help us say thanks and aloha to the awesome crew at Kent St who have held us for the last 3 years..

@signals_ambient August edition is on wednesday 26th 7pm at Kent St.

after our 3rd bday last month we’re back with a heater of a triple bill:

Steve Zeitlhofer aka Sunburnt Landlord’s [ @sunburntstevelord ] work focuses on combining different minimalistic sound elements to explore one’s sense of time and place in the performance space.. hailing from Canberra (Ngunnawal and Ngambri country) and now based in Naarm, this will be Steve’s return to live performance after a couple years hiatus, so be gentle!

Uuxe [ @_uuxe_ ] is the ambient moniker of Melbourne based artist Jack Brock. The project is a meditation on space and texture; exploring the dialogue that sounds may engage in when given the room to do so.
Jack ran ambient events across Toronto for several years & operates the ambient cassette tape imprint @ageofleisure

Tim Shiel [ @timshiel ] is a guy with a wikipedia page lol.. but seriously he's a really quite prolific music maker who has also worked across radio, advocacy, and his label Spirit Level.. after winning industry gongs for a game soundtrack or 2 and a collab with guzheng player you've probably heard of, he's making a return to solo performance and he's doing it with us.. lucky us.. lucky you.

Thanks to @signals_ambient for having Driftwood play at their 3rd birthday party! We had a lovely time and hope you did too! ✨
Thanks for the pics @gearingandy !

MAPS out now on @room40shoots by @signals_ambient

Driftwood’s recent @room40shoots release MAPS is still getting a lot of love 💜 We were of featured on the latest edition of The Wire Tapper compilation, have been getting some lovely air play recently including BBC3, and received a very insightful 4.5 start review on ChainLinkDLK, and The Slow Music Movement 😀

The good news for Naarm folks is that we have two more shows coming up ✨💃✨

July 29 @signals_ambient 3rd birthday at Kent St Bar. We’ll be playing alongside Pierre B aka @letxequaly and CELLOSPELLS “an anonymous collective of local cellists who make analog vibration-based spells for willing participants”

August 22 @the.cactus.room Microtonal Fuzz alongside Navā duo (@alecilyine and @polyvarghese) and Temporary (@alecilyine and @evelynidamorris)

“This Driftwood album is a serious winner.
The progression from the debut is real and fingers crossed, the project will run and run, it could just be one of those rare beasts - a cultured ambient project that you’d actually like to see live.” (The slow music movement) @theslowmusicmovement

Chainlink DLK:
“Together they have discovered something increasingly rare: a duo whose individual personalities remain distinct while gradually dissolving into a genuinely shared voice…Folk-like melodic fragments surface briefly before dissolving back into shimmering harmonic fields, suggesting memories that remain emotionally vivid even after their details have faded. It is music that understands nostalgia without becoming nostalgic, a distinction easier to appreciate than to achieve.”

Thanks @monosylabik for the cute pic from our launch show @eastmint and @sarahtakesphotos for our promo shots

guitars, code and sine waves swirl together this month at @signals_ambient, 7pm wednesday june 24th, upstairs at Kent St Bar..

belgium’s latest export to naarm, @alecilyine is launching his new vinyl LP “Driftlines” with his first set back on our stage since relocating here.. pulling influence from ragas, flamenco, arabic, drone and classical, Alec uses ipad processing and field recording to inflect his fingerpicking style across guitars, taishogoto, cavaquino, found flutes, and even birdsongs collected along his travels.. a true original, we’re stoked to have him back for this launch.

Mara MacDonald [ @marararararararararara ] is a live-coder, sound-artist, musician and performer releasing on labels in naarm and manchester, who has gigged at the premiere spots: Make It Up Club, Miscellania, Liquid Architecture, Arts Centre Meat Market and more, as well as mentoring at SIGNAL/SoundSchool’s Livecoding workshop. Brad Rose of Foxy Digitales said of her debut: “This music creates space for those who don’t often find it … each word, each sound echoes into forever.” uh, yeah, you wanna see that right? right??

and returning to the Signals stage for his first solo set in a couple of years is co-curator Kieran Ruffles [ @ok.ruffles ] a meanjin/naarm multi-instrumentalist who puts improvisation at the centre of their practice. He likes exploring analog drone, close harmony, low frequency sound, delay and polymetric percussion.
He is a founding member of Sundanese-Australian electronica collaboration LOTEKNO, and a member of duos such as ruff-dots with Signals co-creator Daniel O’Toole, and bonvivant with guitarist and flaneur Norm Michailidis.

come say hi by @signals_ambient

This month we welcome part of the Signals team @daniel.otoole aka @morse_code_poetry to present a listening party for his new album Outer Magnolia, and play a set of some fresh new sounds

@kentst
7pm (Doors at 6:30)
Wed 27th May
$20 for entry

Daniel O’Toole aka @morse_code_poetry is a Sydney-born multimedia artist and musician based in Naarm/Melbourne. Beginning with sample-based production on an Akai S2000 sampler and rooted in a background in violin, his sound practice stems from Boom Bap structures and has wandered into the hazier territory of ambient composition, electro-acoustic textures, and glitchy percussion. Working with vintage synthesisers, acoustic instrumentation, field recordings, and live processing, his music balances analogue warmth with immersive, otherworldly atmospheres.

Next up we have @oliveoliveyaah
A multi-disciplinary artist – keyboardist, producer, improviser, vocalist, and visual creator. Now based in Naarm, she crafts soundscapes that seamlessly blend elements of Hip Hop, Vaporwave and Electronica, pairing her soulful vocals with jazzy keys that nod to impressionist composers.

Using her SP404 sampler and keyboards as primary tools, Olive Yaah creates a unique sonic space that ignites audiences while pushing the boundaries of rhythm and harmony.

Also joining us for a debut signals performance will be @atavusinfectum

Atavus Infectum is the dark ambient, noise, and sound design project of Hugh Nichols, operating from Dharug and Gundungurra Country in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. Blending electroacoustic composition, swelling synthesiser drones, reverberant clawhammer banjo, field recordings, and granular textures, the project creates immersive ritualistic soundscapes that sit between the natural world and the unknown. Rooted in improvisation and atmosphere, the works evoke mist, stone, forgotten places, and ancient forces.

heavy hitters strike soft and far-flung phenomenologists of sound meet for the first time this month at your fave phono club :
@signals_ambient

wed 29th april:

Anna Morley & Zoltan Fecso [ @annamorleymusic + @zoltan.pepper ] are THE vibraphone and synthesiser duo of our moment, the hottest, gentlest, softest ticket in town, and they crown their national tour with a return to Kent St to finish launching their debut long-player Desire Path.. described by cyclic defrost's bob baker fish as "the music of stillness, of calmness, where the cadence is slow, designed with meditative intent, electro acoustic ambience imbued with a simplicity that creates an almost medicinal impact on the human body" if you like mallets and oscillators, [ and, like, feeling nice ] this is for you..
oh and come early for an artists' talk from Anna & Zoltan at 7pm too

and from argentina via eora, Augustin Marseillan [ @goose_agus ] blends rhythmic exploration and human–machine interplay across polyrhythmic drums and modular-based jazz harmonies.. known to shift fluidly between warehouse, festival and club settings, Goose has releases out on Tartelet and Mixcult, and we can't wait to see what he brings to our room..

Nick Ashwood [ @kcin_doowhsa ] is a multi-instrumental composer and performer of contemporary experimental music, toting a masters in acoustic phenomena and improv from the tassie conservatorium. he collabs on the reg with serious heavyweights like Aviva Endean & Jim Denley, and works with "sound as a dialogue between listener, object, and environment, drawing out the subtle interconnections.. allowing textures to emerge and accumulate.." you wanna be here for that
