@qingshan.49 by @signyandesign

Chongqing is built in tiers, stacked against mountains and rivers. This guide follows its everyday rhythms: the exchange between old and new architecture, and the neighborhood life that happens in between.

Our host here is @signyandesign, a design studio whose projects range across hotels, restaurants, galleries and shops, from the Tibetan plateau to central Shanghai — but which works from here in Chongqing.

Spend 24 hours exploring their version of Chongqing: the neighborhoods, buildings, and warm hospitality that make it worth the climb.

Comment “Chongqing” to receive the full guide with our design commentary for each stop ❇️

For ZUGORAMA House No.12, set within a century-old villa on Shanghai’s Yuyuan Road, we began with the existing fabric of the building—its proportions, material traces and accumulated sense of time. Rather than replacing the old, we introduced a new layer that allows different periods and textures to coexist. Conceived as a “theatre of everyday life,” the space brings together cooking, dining, work, fermentation and garden settings, with V-ZUG appliances integrated into daily use rather than displayed as objects. Through these overlapping layers of architecture, material and life, the house remains open to new rituals, relationships and traces of time.

Seven years in the making, naive Jinshanling Hotel is a story of patience, adaptation, and building with the landscape rather than against it.

Nestled at the foot of the Great Wall, what began as an architectural idea gradually evolved into a quiet mountain village for reading, gathering and staying. Along the way, the site itself changed, opening new relationships between the building, the valley, and the community.

In this video, Xie Ke shares the story behind the project, and how time became one of its most important design materials.

Jingmai Mountain is located in Lancang Lahu Autonomous County, Pu’er City, Yunnan Province—a land shaped jointly by ancient tea forests, villages, and mist. Around the 10th century AD, the ancestors of the Blang people migrated here and discovered and began making use of wild tea trees. Afterward, the Dai and other ethnic groups arrived and together they worked out a way of cultivation known as “under-forest tea.”

Over the millennium that followed, villages were built along the mountainside, and the tea forests spread and grew amid the mist. In 2023, this cultural landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming the world’s first World Heritage site themed around tea.

Here, tea trees grow within a forest formed jointly by trees, shrubs, ferns, mosses, and fungi. The relationship between people and forest is not a simple one of taking and using, but a mode of coexistence gradually worked out through long mutual adaptation over time. This coexistence has also settled into a wisdom of living passed down from generation to generation among the local people—what Jingmai has preserved is not merely an ancient tea forest, but an ancient way of living in harmony with nature.

“The mountain nurtures the tea, the tea cultivates the people, and the people protect the mountain.” The wisdom accumulated over generations on the tea mountain and in its villages is not built upon the conquest of nature, but is experience formed through living together with nature on the basis of understanding its order. Human beings are not managers standing outside the ecosystem, but have always been a part of it.

Jing Mai Lush Wellness Resort, led in design by Signyan, invites us to reconsider the meaning of “wellness.” It is not only about using nature to heal the body; more importantly, it is about bringing people back into the land, climate, and rhythms around them. When a person becomes part of the surrounding ecology, healing becomes simply the natural result of a restored relationship with one’s environment.

“When we were children, nearly every house in the neighbourhood had a small courtyard. Kids would gather under the trees to play. Chongqing people are warm, open, and generous in spirit. Children grew up sharing meals with neighbours, moving from one home to another. That way of life—full of everyday warmth and closely woven with the people around you—is increasingly rare in cities today,” says Xie Ke.

In Xiahaoli, on Chongqing’s Nan’an side, we renovated an old courtyard house. Hidden within winding alleys, it offers a quiet retreat from the bustle of the city. Step through the gate, and it feels like returning to an old Chongqing held in memory: corridors turning and unfolding, window openings scattered in rhythm, light and shadow drifting through the space, gathering a quiet vitality in the courtyard.

We continue to explore the potential of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship in contemporary spaces, seeking to transform them into a design language that is both aesthetically refined and functionally relevant.

Rooted in traditional lacquer techniques, this research incorporates natural materials such as linen and handmade paper. Through a series of handcrafted processes—including mounting, saturation, layering, brushing, and polishing—we investigate the relationship between lacquer and different material substrates. The absorbency, texture, and fiber structure of each base material give every finish its own distinctive tactile quality and visual depth.

In contrast to the uniformity of industrially manufactured surfaces, handcrafted lacquer finishes retain the vitality of the materials themselves. The subtle undulations of fibers, the texture of paper, the traces left by hand-applied layers, and the gradual penetration of mineral pigments into the woven surface create an experience rich in warmth and craftsmanship. Every brushstroke and polished mark carries something of the maker’s mood and state of mind, allowing the material to develop its own imperfect yet expressive character.

In spatial applications, handcrafted lacquer finishes help soften the hardness of architectural surfaces, creating an atmosphere defined by low-contrast textures and subtle depth. Under changing light conditions, different layers of sheen and texture gradually emerge, enriching the sensory experience of a space.

Opened in early 2020 on the shores of Erhai Lake in Dali, Sisan Shuanglang Hotel @sisanhotel reinterprets traditional Bai architecture through a quiet contemporary lens. Reopened this May after a thoughtful renovation by Xie Ke and the Signyan Design, the hotel reflects a renewed vision of contemporary hospitality — rooted in locality yet shaped by a global sensibility. Curated objects, intuitive craftsmanship, soft rituals of daily care, and a seamless dialogue between village, nature, and space create a slower, a more lived-in, human-centered retreat experience.

A new project by Signyan Design

The Naive Jinshanling Hotel is located in Aranya, beneath the Jinshanling Great Wall.

At the initial stage, the key challenges were how to work with the triangular sloping site and how to relate to the surrounding commercial context. Instead of creating a single, monolithic volume, we chose to break down the 5,000 sqm building into smaller fragments, forming a “mountain village” that lies low along the slope—like a leaf gently resting on the terrain.

During the construction process, an unexpected change occurred: the originally planned large-scale commercial development was canceled, leaving behind an open lawn of grass. As a result, this “leaf” became a natural backdrop to the surrounding community and valley, blending more seamlessly into its environment.

Naive Hotel is a hybrid space, comprising a bookstore, restaurant, and guest rooms. We prefer to think of it as “a study for creators”—a place to stay, reflect, and live, rather than a standardized hotel.

The village-like structure allows the spaces to be both connected and independent—the bookstore and restaurant are open to the community, while the hotel retains a sense of privacy. Guests can engage with the community, participate in outdoor and public life; and when they return to their rooms, they can enter a quieter, more introspective state of mountain living.
