I made pumpernickel bread yesterday. This is the best loaf I’ve made in a while. The cranberries add a sweetness while the walnuts add that perfect crunch. I will probably go through a stick of butter this weekend toasting and eating this bread Yum!! But for now, I am going to make a Gouda grilled cheese sandwich.

Recently spent the day at the Baker Creek seed fall festival with friends. The weather was perfect. This family friendly event is always enjoyable. We were met at the entrance with a huge tent full of seeds, of course I bought seeds and more seeds as we left. The location is set up like a small town/village with the “general store” being the seed store. The restaurant serves a delicious vegan meal. As you walk through the “village” there is music playing with hay bales to sit down and enjoy a rest and the smell of delicious foods and coffee brewing. If you are ever able to attend one of the festivals be sure to sign up for some of the seminars. The speakers are experienced and it’s amazing what you learn about improving your gardens. There are a lot of craft vendors with home made soaps, locally roasted coffee, quilts, jewelry and all kinds of other giftable items. In years past I have set up a booth with my quilts and sewn item and enjoyed spending time there. It’s nice to see artisan venders throughout making sales. I’m looking forward to going to their spring festival. Hope to see you there.

Don’t hate me. If only I could send you the wonderful smell. Breathe deep. I did move the candle after starting the fire. I always keep the first fires of the season small. I start them in the evening just to take the chill out of the house.
It’s working. I need to warm up some leftover chicken wild rice soup and toast up a slice of zucchini, cheese, scallion bread to go with. In spite of everything I am in my happy place. I gathered some twigs off the deck for kindling and always leave small seasoned firewood from the previous year for the first fire of the season.
Wish you were here.

Making memories … finished another t-shirt memory quilt. This quilt is full of memories with t-shirts, pillow cases, pants/jeans, boy scout scarves and pj’s. From the looks of the t-shirts this young man did a lot of traveling. The mom wanted straight line quilting. I had forgotten how nice straight line quilting looks on a finished quilt. My Gammill Elevate made this quilt out so fast and easy.

What is on the design wall this week?

This week I have a custom t-shirt quilt on the design wall. This quilt is full of memories with t-shirts, pillow cases, pants/jeans, boy scout scarves and pj’s. From the looks of the t-shirts this young man did a lot of traveling.

What is on the design wall this week?
I had several quilts in mind before going to #quiltcon2023. Here is one of them, a design I call square-in-a-square on the design wall. I typically make up squares/blocks, in between custom quilt orders, and store them in tubs until I have enough to put together a quilt. This one is made with homespun and “farmhouse” fabrics. I label quilts “farmhouse” because I use the thinking of my grandma Lena, who made quilts, “use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without” approach to quilts. Basically recycling, when recycling was not in the daily vocabulary. These “farmhouse” fabrics are from cutting up shirts/clothing, remnants, fabrics I bought long ago and need to be used, yes maybe even some “ugly” fabrics thrown in the mix. I have enough blocks to make possibly a couple more. I like making this style of quilt.

The 2nd quilt I am working on is a HST made with civil war and 1800’s reproduction fabric. I have most of the squares trimmed and ready for the design wall once I get the 1st quilt pieced. Most of the fabric used are from 5” squares I purchased back in 2016. It’s time I actually use some of the “special” fabric I have been saving … for that special quilt. I have enough of this reproduction fabric I can make several of these. This one I may keep since it is my style.

I have found that Fiskars rotating cutting mat, Olfa rotary cutter with a new Olfa endurance rotary blade and the Bloc Loc 6.5” square ruler makes trimming up HST a breeze. I’ve used my Bloc Loc ruler so much I think I’m in need of a new one. My Juki sewing machine makes it a breeze to piece using A&E Perma Core thread. Finally my Gammill Elevate will quilt these two quilts with beautiful stitching, again using A&E Perma Core thread, making these two quilts something I want to keep and add to my own home.

This modern zig zag/rick rack design is made with a solid black quilters cotton and many prints and plaids to create a quilt that will cause the eyes to travel to take in the gradient colors. It will coordinate with just about any color scheme. The black/bright starburst quilters cotton used on the back coordinates well with the colors and design on the front and makes this quilt reversible. To soften the strong angular lines I used a spiral/raindrop on water quilting design and at least 8 variegated colored threads. Using variegated threads causes an illusion that sections of stitching is missing such as the "red' colored portion of thread stitches over red fabric. This illusion happens all over the quilt adding dimension. The variegated yellow/orange/green thread used on the backside reads as a white/cream until you look close and see the colors seem to disappear and then reappear and shine. This quilt finished out at 60" x 83", just shy of a twin size. Yet the perfect size for napping, throwing on the sofa, end of the bed or even hanging on the wall as art.
Thank you @ginger_quilter for hosting a UFO challenge. It’s finally done!!
