A new chapter starts now♥️

Yesterday, we officially welcomed Jeanette McCune to Sitar Arts Center as our new executive director!

On her first day, Jeanette got to know the heart of Sitar: our students, teaching artists, staff, and the creative spaces where young people come to learn, connect, and discover the infinite potential within themselves.

As we look ahead, we’re excited for everything this new era will bring - and the continued impact we can create together for D.C. youth.

Here’s to new beginnings, new possibilities, and many more moments of creativity and connection at Sitar.

⏳ COUNTDOWN TO OPENING ⏳

We're days away from "Pulled Threads" — so here's a sneak peek at some of the works before they're up on our walls.

Natalie Jenkins' (@_natnatnatnatnatnatnatnat) paintings pull from memory, family, and home — reimagined in bold, saturated color and dreamlike detail. Her soft-sculptures take everyday objects and blow them up into something larger-than-life: playful at first glance, with something deeper underneath.

Funny. Familiar. A little melancholy. That's "Pulled Threads."

Swipe through for a preview — and come see the rest in person. 📸

Meet the artist turning childhood memories into giant, huggable sculptures 🧸✨

Natalie Jenkins (@_natnatnatnatnatnatnatnatnat) takes family photos, floods them with color, and turns them into dreamlike paintings you can't stop staring at. Then she takes ordinary objects — the kind you forgot you loved as a kid — and blows them up into larger-than-life soft sculptures that are equal parts funny, weird, and heartbreaking.

It's called "Pulled Threads," and it's part memory, part fever dream, part inside joke only your childhood self would get.

Natalie is an interdisciplinary artist based in Baltimore City, MD, with an MFA from MICA's Mount Royal School of Art. Her work has shown everywhere from NYC's Every Woman Biennial to GoggleWorks Center for the Arts — and now, it's coming to Sitar Arts Center's Cafritz Gallery.

You can meet her in person at the opening reception. Ask her about the flowers. Ask her about the sculptures. Just don't ask her to explain the melancholy — you'll have to feel that one yourself. 👀

🗓️ OPENING RECEPTION
Thursday, October 1 | 7:00 p.m.

RSVP Today: Link in bio

Come early, stay for the creativity, community and conversation. This is one you don't want to see secondhand on Instagram.

📍 Tag someone who needs a night out on Oct 1.

Through hyper-saturated paintings that reimagine family photographs into dreamlike scenes, and larger-than-life soft-sculptures that are equal parts playful and poignant, "Pulled Threads" invites you into a world of anthropomorphic flowers, fragmented memory, and lived experience.

It's comedic. It's melancholic. It's unmistakably her.

What a night on the piazza. ✨

Thank you to everyone who made our 6th Annual Sitar on the Piazza possible.

The evening belonged to our students and alumni, from live music to the artwork in our marketplace. 🎶🎨

It was a reminder of what young people can achieve when they have access to the arts, a place to belong, and people who believe in their potential.

You are those people. Sitar isn't just a place. It's a community, and you're at the heart of it.

Special thanks to @iricchidc, our sponsors @ttrsir, @counselorstitle, @alignindc, and @greggbusch of First Savings Mortgage, and our host committee, chaired by @carrolldey.

Stay connected and see what comes next:
