“the 大 collection”
in collaboration with artist @amtattoo_art

this project has lived in my head for the longest time, and finally we’ve made it come to life

just like “roots” (my scrunchie project) this is something that intertwines the two things which have always been in conflict in my life: being chinese and playing rugby / doing crossfit

“大” (da) was one of my biggest trigger words growing up. 大 = big.

my legs were 太大了，my shoulders were 太大了, my arms, my butt, all my muscles… are 太大了. too big, too muscular, too masculine. 大 for a chinese woman, is a very negative thing…but what’s wrong with having big legs & big muscles & big, strong arms?

“the 大 collection” aims to flip this narrative. it represents this new era of women who are 大 because we love to move, to sweat, we love to lift, we love to run, to challenge ourselves, to pass a ball, to go on adventures, to tackle, we love to explore, to jump..

choosing strength is feminine & beautiful and being 大 is feminine & beautiful

“roots”

a small project to intertwine the two things which have always been in conflict in my life: being chinese & playing rugby

a 旗袍 “qipao” is a traditional chinese dress usually made out of a patterned, silk material. it represents traditional chinese beauty & femininity.

i want to show young girls that playing rugby can be feminine and beautiful and…chinese.
so the other day i went to sham shui po, picked up some 旗袍 material, and made these scrunchies.

i will be wearing these scrunchies in every rugby game i play this summer.

it’s time to normalize this: a chinese female can play rugby and it is beautiful and feminine.

大 IN THE WILD: guess my sport 🌸💪🏻

asked a hong kong woman at a flower stand to guess what sport i play, then told her about what 大 means to me!! ☺️

many chinese women grow up being told they are “太大了 “too big” and for me, it was my legs, shoulders and muscles… so i put 大 on a shirt 🤷🏻‍♀️

taking up space, being big, strong & healthy is beautiful, and its my mission to have as many of these conversations as possible with women (&men) across hong kong. so follow along! 🇭🇰

thank you @aishongkong for having me ❤️🤍💙 i spent last friday on their campus sharing my 大 story with the middle and high school students, coaching some girls PE classes & doing a parent 大 workshop on raising confident kids 🫶🏻

standing in that hall i kept thinking, i used to be one of these students.. the ballet dancer insecure about her body, the half&half kid that didn’t really fit into just one culture, the person just trying to keep up in school and just trying to find something she was passionate about & good at!

i really wish we had female athletes come into my school when i was younger, so that 13-year old sofie could have had a strong, muscular, confident role model to look up to. i wish someone had told me back then being strong does not take away from your femininity.

it’s the same ‘why’ behind @girlsliftgirls @the.da.collection and why i try to visit as many schools as i can across asia… to talk to young women (and men!) about pushing past the narratives written for us, and using our 大 bodies and 大 voices to chase after our 大 goals & dreams 💪🏻❤️

“The 大 Collection”

Can’t believe it’s been 2 years since launching this passion project (in collab with @amtattoo_art) .. and somehow we’re still going with this t-shirt!! 🤩

大 means “big” in Chinese. As a Chinese-German rugby player growing up in Shanghai, I’ve always been told that my legs or arms were “太大了” “too big” so when I launched this project, it was to flip the narrative on what it means to be strong and 大, not just physically but having a 大 voice and 大 dreams 💪🏻

So many women & men around the world have resonated with feeling “too much” in some way and supported this project over the last few years, which I’m extremely grateful for! ❤️

We are restocking sizes in all original colors next week (blue, beige and green) on our website thedacollection.com (link in bio!) and… launching this new lavender color too!! 😍

Sofie Fella was told her body was too big for ballet. It turned out to be exactly right for rugby, and for Germany’s national team. Angela Wong and William Lo have spent six years teaching Hong Kong girls the same lesson through basketball.
