POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Gosh it’s been a while since I’ve posted something on here…

It’s a strange world we live in right now, especially this media space, but doing this project has reminded me of the importance and beauty of playing with other musicians, expressing humanity in a room as the take rolls out, as it is. There were so many giggles and it was such a delight to play around with sounds in what is one of the loveliest sounding spaces I’ve recorded in for some time. Thanks to @molliecrammond & @louis.forsyth @metropolisstudios for ‘making our jobs so easy’ 😉

It feels like a small protest to the sterile mindless A| content out there too, knowing that such a moment couldn’t be replicated. The nervousness, the raucous laughter at strange creak noises and squeals as we designed the scape we wanted, the spilt tea, hummus, veggie ham, the re-takes, the thousands of hours of practice, tears, rosin, wurlitzer explosions, sweat and blood that went into these beautiful masterful players creating this very moment on instruments perhaps hundreds of years old, resonating in one space, for one moment.

This is By Morning, an ode to the humanity in us, sent over to me by one of my oldest and dearest friends @tessarosejackson just over a year ago. When I heard it in its entirety, I knew that something special was sitting in front of me and it just hit home so hard. To the point that I knew I needed time to let the string arrangement come out over time. Hence why it didn’t actually make it onto the original album. While Tessa wrote this song in an afternoon, the string lines shaped themselves over a few sessions, and eventually came to light around the death of a beautiful friend and teacher, Karim Manji. In his passing, some other music was written from a beautiful friend @joeholtaway who last week also passed away. As this is landing in its fully recorded shape at the same time, I’d like to dedicate the arrangement to these incredible pieces of stardust that I got to walk this earth with, but so many never came to know.

I made a sample pack!

For all you lovely folk that make trailers, gaming soundscapes, film scores & instrumental music - I hope you enjoy using this as the first rendition of a collection of snapshots of my signature sound!

Over 250 solo cello samples, loops, one shots and effects all recorded with high quality industry standard analog hardware from UAD, AKG condenser mics and ADC’s…

You’ll hear both dark and light harmonics, rhythmic crunches, mournful melodies and phrases, pads, swells, sustained notes, builds, climaxes, cinematic stabs, trills, unmeasured and measured tremelos, expressive portamentos, pizzicato, nuanced flautando longs, one shots and more…

Massive shout out to @sarahproctor for letting me pop a clip of her music video ‘Tired’ in this reel!

Also @jolemusic @jakeringsellfilm @misterwillsmith @laurareznek @maxbandicootofficial and @jack.beech for popping my face behind the camera for these live recordings!

Finally got round to watching The Crown S5 which I had the great fortune of working on last year thanks to recommends from PSM Nina Rice @beanzza_ & support from @uk_screenskills !

A big highlight was running #soundplant playback for Charles’ side of the infamous tapped #Camillagate #Tampongate phone convo in EP 5 ‘The Way Ahead’. Weirdest thing to know that intimate transcript by heart 🙈

So beautiful to see the final edit for the bittersweet scenes from Lesley Manville and Timothy Dalton in EP4 ‘Annus Horribilis’. Loved liaising with @pollyannabennett & @sarahlbridge on a day with over 150 cast & crew & full band running earwigs & hiding cables into every nook & cranny of a listed central London building! Shoutout 2 @noonwithatune & @madwilling for orchestrating music from @hanszimmer @airstudioslyndhurst too!

Watched it alongside the controversial #HarryAndMeghan doco & couldn’t get over the accuracy of performance & vocal tones from @elizabeth_debickiofficial compared to interview footage of #Diana - @williamconacher & Nick Trumble?

Thanks to Chris Ashworth, Steve Hancock & #TieMasterSupreme @jodiestedman for pushing me to step up to #2AS & offer my own playback solutions!

1. @jodiestedman @ruby.ngc @ChloeKKnight
2. Me Booming in the engine room of HMS Belfast
3. These took an entire film crew down them
4. Probably the Narwhal tusk that #DarrynFrost used to defend Usman Khan in London Bridge in 2019 @lorddavidball
5. Actual taxidermy pheasants thrown when doing the Prince Charles shooting scenes
6. @jodiestedman booming some gunshots from @_dominicwest like a boss while Chris & I steer clear!
7. My living quarters @prahlad.das
8. #FilmMedics being film medics and leaning on any bit of kit they can - this was the playback rig for the Tampongate scene!
9. View from the roof of burning wing feat @Luke.lloyd
10. Steve and I catching a breath after booming a burning building being evacuated in torrential rain

Maida Vale photo dump!

Such a delight to share a studio & stage with the beauties that are @someonespictures @tessarosejackson and @daritimm with the force of nature of a rhythm section that is @henning.dietz and @samhardingmusic

Felt truly on air (ha) all day even if we were only there for a matter of minutes!

Huge thanks to @cerys6music and @bbc6music for having us and the wonderful in house engineers Joe & @alex_reed_97 at #maidavalestudios for putting up with our silliness! taken in BBC Maida Vale Studios London by @sphygmus

It really is a beautiful piece, and again an honour to have been able to provide the strings for such a great song.

A shout out again to @phoebesnelling @kasia.ziminska and Helen Sanders-Hewett for their un-ending skills on their instruments, and @jack.beech for his engineering prowess. @palpstergram

Strange World by Someone

When I first put this track in my ears I couldn’t stop playing it.

Sitting on the string parts through lockdown was, honestly, taxing, because I knew how great a track I was working with and imposter syndrome started to creep in. The final verse itself serendipitously depicts the continued journey so well.

The song, penned by my dear friends @someonespictures along with the incredible choreography from @ed3nnnnn guitar slides from another bestie @benjaminlongman and killer engineering skills from @jack.beech getting @integrastrings together at @spitfireaudio makes this one of my proudest collaborations to date.

If you’re into it, lovehearts 💚 on Spotify and full length watches of the video on YouTube will help push this release into the world and enable more to witness its poignant beauty.

Swipe across for BTS pics.

Thanks so much to @woeyjalker and @tobyjohnsonuk for getting me along for the string arrangements for this, and @timg.ardner and Helen Sanders-Hewett for making the arrangements come alive during a pandemic.

You’ll find us on ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ on this EP and perhaps another track to come down the line...😉

Here are some notes from Toby about the EP itself for context...

・・・
It’s often difficult to say things out loud. We hold back on things we should say and we often say the things we shouldn’t. ‘Things I Should Have Said’ is a mixture of emotions and feelings I’ve held back on over the years. Friendships I’ve lost and opportunities I’ve missed. I hope you love this EP and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Produced by @woeyjalker, before and during the lockdown in his living room and from afar in my bedroom.

Released via @mahogany and @marathonartists thank you for your hard work on this.

Shout to:
@calcipha
@joedavieslike
@croz_96
@the_sims_2_pets.exe
@sphygmus
@bobekonbass
For their musical touches throughout.

The talented @toldesign_ for writing the EP artwork text (Things I Should Have Said) because I’m literally incapable of making words look good.

And of course to @bigfatcreative for their work on the ‘WHY?’ Music video which will be released this evening at 6pm (don’t miss the premiere)
