When I left corporate journalism last year, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief. I finally had the freedom to pursue stories that truly mattered to me, particularly those exposing the systemic injustices women continue to face in healthcare. Today, one of those stories was finally published in @womenshealthmag!!!

I spent more than a year working on this feature, investigating the discrimination Black women face when navigating fertility care. I interviewed countless women whose experiences were as heartbreaking as they were infuriating. Research shows that Black women experience infertility at roughly twice the rate of white women. Yet Black donors account for just 9% of egg donors at major U.S. egg banks, despite Black women representing approximately 14% of the reproductive-age population.

For families seeking donors who share their racial or ethnic backgrounds, an already emotionally and financially exhausting process becomes even more difficult. These are the healthcare inequities that deserve far more attention, and I’m incredibly proud to have helped bring this one to light. A huge thank you to @eloisedrane, @alyssasmalllayne.md, @drtiajacksonbey, and @tendaichiwaremd for trusting me with your stories. Annnnnnnddddd… to the incredible team at Women’s Health, especially Abigail Cuffey, who worked tirelessly alongside me and somehow managed to tolerate my endless questions about when this piece would finally be published, I salute you! 🤣😅 More than anything, I hope this story brings greater awareness to an injustice that has gone overlooked for far too long. by @srsalathe

When I started Matriarchs of Horror a year ago, I didn’t have some grand vision for what I wanted it to become. I just wanted a space to talk about horror. But somewhere along the way, it became something bigger. The more I connected with fellow horror lovers and eventually expanded those conversations into a podcast, the more I realized I wanted to create spaces where we could come together and have the kinds of conversations that horror so often invites us to have about women’s lived experiences.

And next month, I’m finally doing it!!!

On Nov. 2nd I’ll be hosting the first-ever Matriarchs of Horror salon, an intimate conversation exploring abortion access, bodily autonomy, and the ways those themes have manifested throughout horror. My friend and author Eleanor Johnson and journalist @garnethenderson have graciously agreed to join me as speakers, and I’ll be partnering with @nyaafund, with proceeds from ticket sales benefiting their work supporting abortion access in New York. I also wanted to bring these conversations to life before midterms so we can all understand the very real fight for abortion access under this administration. A huge thank you to @qedastoria for hosting us and if you’re based in NYC, I hope to see some of you there.

You can find ticket information here: https://qedastoria.com/products/the-body-is-political

Often when I hear people say they support abortion, I’m curious whether they’re thinking about how access looks for all women. As a feminist dedicated to intersectionality, I try and think about my activism through a nuanced lens and while I’m not always perfect, I strive to always be better. Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak to Nourbese Flint, President of @allaboveall on the EPA’s new study to test drinking water for Mifepristone, which is comical in itself, but we also had the opportunity to discuss the intersectionality of abortion access and environmental justice, specifically how the two are connected. Our full conversation will be available on a special, paid episode of @matriarchsofhorror, in October ahead of midterms. Please make sure you tune in, not just because it’s for a good cause, but because you might actually learn something. by @srsalathe

Today, I discovered that @gloriasteinem lived on my street, just two blocks away. We were so close, yet never had the chance to meet. To be fair, I only moved to the neighborhood a few months ago, so I shouldn’t be so dramatic about it. Then again, it’s we’re talking about here! I literally listen to TTPD at the slightest inconvenience 😂. I’ve been struggling with Gloria’s passing over the last few days, even though I never knew her personally. She meant so much to me, not only as a feminist, but as a journalist and someone who embodied compassion and empathy for others. Her lifelong fight for women’s rights will continue to inspire my activism and my own efforts to build a legacy centered on helping women. I hope to accomplish even a fraction of what she did and create meaningful change through my podcast and media company. I already love this neighborhood, but it now holds an even deeper significance. Knowing that Gloria walked these same streets and may have visited the cafés where I often sit and read brings a smile to my face. In a way, it feels as though she isn’t truly gone. Gloria, I love you more than words could ever express and will never stop!!! 🥹💔 taken in Upper East Side by @srsalathe

Last weekend felt like an absolute fever dream!!! I don’t think I’ll ever get over how magical it felt to be surrounded by so many of the people we love, celebrating with us and watching us say our vows. Even though there was rain in the forecast, almost immediately after our ceremony, the sun came out. I like to think that was Nathan’s mom smiling upon us and letting us know she was there. Nathan, I will never stop loving you, and I can’t wait to keep building this magical, beautiful, and ridiculously fun life together. Here’s to a lifetime of loving each other and doing dope shit together!!!! ❤️

This week on the podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with author @emma.cleary_ about her haunting new novel, After Birth which is an unsettling exploration of pregnancy, motherhood, sisterhood, and the many ways patriarchy dismisses women’s bodies. I absolutely love getting to have conversations like these because they remind me that horror has always been about so much more than monsters. It’s a genre that gives us space to examine the fears and very real realities of living in our bodies, and I’m so grateful to be able to explore those ideas with such thoughtful authors.
