Today’s Floor Plan | Winning Proposal for the 2026 Suwon Art Lab Public Art Project

Today’s Floor Plan, a collaborative proposal by SS2 Architects and the DPAS(@dpas.info) at Hanyang University ERICA, has been selected as a winning project for the 2026 Suwon Art Lab Public Art Project, organized by Suwon City and the Suwon Cultural Foundation.

Curtains moving along curved ceiling rails create rooms, passages, stages, and places to rest, with every movement recorded as a real-time plan. Over one year, 365 daily drawings form an archive of a public space continually remade by people. by @ss2_architects

Today’s Floor Plan

Beneath the 9-meter concrete grid of the 1971 tobacco factory and the 1.5-meter timber grid added during its transformation in 2021, the project introduces a third layer drawn by people. The paths created as they move the curtains are recorded as the “plan of the day.” by @ss2_architects

Rectangular City, Curves of Play

Repetitive apartment blocks, straight roads, and rectangular plots establish the ordered city surrounding 111CM. Yet the movements of people playing, resting, and gathering within it remain free and unpredictable. The project translates these movements into fluid curves drawn over the fixed urban grid. by @ss2_architects

Connected and Separated Space

Approximately 100 meters of curtains are divided into 10-meter segments that connect and separate through magnetic edges. Joined together, they form a continuous space flowing along the arcade; separated, they create rooms, passages, stages, and shelters. People move the curtains to reshape spatial density and relationships. by @ss2_architects

Two Grids, One Curve, Four Surfaces

The 9-meter concrete grid from 1971 and the 1.5-meter timber grid from 2021 establish the building’s fixed order. Beneath them, a curved rail forms a third layer, carrying four interchangeable curtain types—translucent, screen, framing, and canvas—to support changing scenes and programs. by @ss2_architects

Live Plan, 365 Archives

Position tags track the movement of each curtain and translate its path into a live plan accessible via QR code. A day filled with children, a flea market, or a quiet rainy afternoon creates a different pattern of lines, density, and direction. Together, 365 daily plans form a public archive of one year at 111CM. by @ss2_architects

Multiple Events, One Moving Architecture

The moving curtains transform the same arcade into an outdoor cinema, a shared drawing canvas, a frame for viewing the city, or a space for children’s architecture workshops. Each event creates a different arrangement and plan, allowing people to continually reinterpret the space through their activities and imagination. by @ss2_architects

Constellation Archive

The 365 daily plans record traces of movement, stillness, events, and weather. Rearranged like constellations, they form an archive for future exhibitions, while selected patterns extend the memory of 111CM into tote bags, posters, and everyday objects. by @ss2_architects

A Public Space Redrawn Every Day

Today’s Plan does not complete the space as a fixed form. By combining ceiling rails, movable curtains, and a data-based archive, it creates an open system that people continually make, record, and reinterpret—a living public space for play, rest, film, markets, and new forms of gathering. by @ss2_architects

Straw Grammar: Translating Korean Vernacular Craft into Architectural Knowledge in a Post-Digital Context

Straw Grammar

Every autumn, approximately 4.8 million tons of rice straw are generated across the Korean Peninsula. Today, straw is largely treated as compost, livestock bedding, or agricultural waste. Within architecture, it is typically framed as a sustainable material or bio-based substitute. This research begins from a different premise. Rather than asking what straw can do as a material, Straw Grammar asks what forms of architectural knowledge are embedded within the craft practices that have historically organized, transformed, and assembled it.

Mats, ropes, thatched roofs, storage vessels, agricultural tools, and ritual artifacts were not merely objects. They embodied accumulated techniques for binding, weaving, compressing, layering, and structuring matter across scales. As post-digital architectural discourse increasingly reconsiders material agency, embodied knowledge, and computational mediation, Korean straw craft offers an underexamined site through which these questions can be revisited.

Developed as a joint research initiative between GSAKU and SS2 Architects within the framework of the 2026 Graduate Design Studio, the research investigates how vernacular craft logics can be translated into contemporary systems of structure, enclosure, material assembly, and circular construction through material experimentation, prototyping, computational analysis, and design speculation.

Straw Grammar is not a study of straw as a material. It is an inquiry into straw as a medium of architectural intelligence. taken in 건국대학교 건축전문대학원 by @ss2_architects
