Open Studio (2–11 September 2025) marked the culmination of Amna AlBaker’s residency at Katara Art Center, organized with Wusum Gallery. Over two months, the artist developed new works across textiles, drawing, and installation, exploring process as both instinct and devotion. Reworking familiar materials in freer ways and incorporating organic elements, the pieces reflected on memory, femininity, grief, and renewal, while drawing on influences such as Clarice Lispector and Louise Bourgeois.

Amna AlBaker (b. 1996) is a Qatari artist whose work offers a deeply personal exploration of identity, womanhood, and emotional transformation. Her art reflects a delicate balance between the personal and the collective, using the terrain of her native Qatar and the mythologies of the Arabian Peninsula to tell stories about inner worlds and the tension between self and society.

In ‘Solve/Coagula’ (2024), Amna combines fabric and metal to represent the fragility and resilience of the human experience. Through embroidery, tearing, and burning, she examines themes of loss, healing, and rebirth, reflecting the cycle of breaking down and rebuilding through pain.

Her ‘Alchemy’ (2024) series furthers this exploration. Burned, torn, and stitched back together, these works symbolise the process of mending emotional wounds and emphasise the growth and renewal that come from healing.

'STORY OF LAND, SEA, AND STARS' (2023) by Amna AlBaker at 'Refracted Identities, Shared Futures', the accompanying exhibition of Noor Riyadh Festival, curated by Neville Wakefield and Maya Athel.

Amna Al Baker’s Story of Land, Sea, and Stars (2023) is a multimedia installation inspired by the origins of the Arabian Peninsula’s inhabitants and their connection to the local environment. Comprising a meticulously hand-embroidered cape, produced in collaboration with Tamader AlSultan, a painted astronomy map depicting the sky of the Arabian Peninsula, and a neon light inscribed with a Quranic verse from surat Alanaam, her artwork ties together the inhabitants’ relationship with the land, sea and stars.

Just as the natural elements shaped people’s way of life, it also molded their identities. The artwork illuminates the interplay between the sacred and the human, light and darkness, and nature and culture, urging us to recognize the importance of preserving ancient knowledge.

Amna Al Baker (b. 1996) is a multidisciplinary artist with Qatari, Indian and Persian heritage. The artist is fuelled by a desire to express her experiences of being an Arab woman in her time and space. She is based in Qatar and is locally well known for her whimsical artworks with a playful edge.

Al Baker’s work revolves around two dualities: the seen and unseen and the self and society—two pairs that are often intrinsically linked to one another.

🔴 Focus on Amna AlBaker 🔴

In Amna AlBaker’s work, almost everything starts and ends with the sun. The sun is an eternal life force from which we all survive, and it features prominently in the artist’s work. In Equinox I and II, Amna combines her attachment to the sun with research on various esoteric ideologies and scientific wisdom.

These exploratory works analyze the relationship between nature and femininity. The artist explores themes such as the sacred feminine, Pythagorean color theory, and the solar trinity to show parallels between the escalating desecration of nature and the sacred feminine.

The encapsulating circles in both works present mirror images of one another, highlighting qualities centuries present in humanity, such as compassion, community, and empathy, which also exist in the natural world. However, these qualities have diminished in our age of rapidly growing greed and materialism.

The three suns in Equinox I represent the Solar Trinity, which stands for the spirit, soul, and body, also representing growth, maturity, and decay. These concepts are shared with the artist’s use of color for the dancing figures. Blue, red, and yellow correspond to the spirit, soul, and body, and black, which contains all colors within it. Both works use color to evoke a sense of harmony between the landscape and its subjects, nodding to the belief that all seven colors of the prism exist in harmony outside the human eye.

Amna critiques how the material world has overcome the spiritual one in these works. She puts forth two visuals in which nature and its parts are again in harmony.

Some snippets of work/research from my sketchbook the past few months. A lot of what I’ve been looking at has to do with the natural world and parallels that exist within it and with our human experience. Its also very grounding for me to look at the ways womanhood is mirrored in nature and the personal meanings and connections I can find there, not only through research but also through the allegories it gifts me. Plants thrive in caregiving communities and so do people 🤍

Focus: Wilderness I (2022), by Amna AlBaker.

Wilderness I is an emblematic work that embodies AlBaker’s recurrent themes and ways of depicting women. As Elina Sairanen writes,

‘’Considering that AlBaker is inspired by her daily experiences as a woman and the women around her, it is perhaps not-so-surprising that depicting women constitutes a significant proportion of the artist’s oeuvre. (...) Central to these depictions of women are the inclusion of references to nature—the terrain of her native Qatar together with its flora plays a great role in AlBaker’s work. Using nature as a metaphor, AlBaker aims to translate women’s everyday experiences from reality to paper and portray parallels between their lived experiences and the plant life. In these works there is also a more societal, almost a political dimension as for AlBaker, being by the beach or in the desert, whether camping, hiking or merely hanging out, is a freeing act in itself—it is in the nature, where women can solely ‘be’, in other words exist without any outside pressure or needing to adhere to any norms, whether cultural, familial or personal.

Ultimately, AlBaker’s canvasses can be conceived as safe spaces, where she has the freedom to address taboos such as questions related to mental health and wellbeing. This depiction of women through a female gaze is not, of course, a new phenomenon in the trajectory of art history (...). While AlBaker’s work is less political, and sits in the context of the Arabian Peninsula, many of her works, for instance Wilderness I (2022), Wilderness II (2022) and Somewhere out There (2022) act in response to a similar need: a utopian dreamscape where women can be free—a goal that resonates among many feminists.’’
