Next up we have @stan_chick, who’s been riding at HHV for a couple of years and has dabbled in a little racing. As part of his fundraiser (as if riding 500kms in circles isn’t enough!) he’s organised a party at @roughtradeeast on Thursday 11th December - the link’s in our stories. Let’s hear more about why Stan’s taking on the F500 challenge…⁠

Who would you like to raise money for and why?⁠
The @RNLI. Growing up on the coast, I was lucky enough to spend my free time by the sea. I began sailing competitively, which led to various opportunities working, teaching, racing, and coaching across the country, where the RNLI and its work were ever-present. I’ve had friends and colleagues be directly involved in lifesaving operations, so I’ve seen first-hand how vital their work is. ⁠

What are you most looking forward to about the ride?⁠
Beyond the prospect of raising money for charity, I’d really enjoy the chance to test myself. I’m under no illusion that this will be one of the toughest things I’ve ever done. ⁠

What are you most nervous about?⁠
I’ve never ridden such a long distance, or spent so long on a bike in one go before, so I’m not sure how my body will respond! I would imagine the early hours to be the toughest mentally, especially if the weather is poor. I’m also not sure how I’ll get on with the repetitiveness of so many laps.⁠

What do you think will keep you motivated through the night?⁠
Plenty of food, hot drinks in flasks and spare dry kit for a small morale boost - and hopefully get a few friends and family along for support too.⁠

What's your longest ride prior to this? What's your cycling background?⁠
I’ve ridden from East Kent to Lille and Roubaix (with a ferry from Dover to Calais) over one day a couple of times, which was just over 200km but fairly flat - my longest ride by time was the 2023 Welsh Dragon: 160km but with 2200m of climbing.⁠

I originally started cycling as a way to improve my fitness during the off-season when I was sailing competitively, but started riding more frequently during lockdown, making the most of the quiet lanes to meet up and go for rides with friends. ⁠

I’m incredibly excited to announce that on December 28th, I’ll be undertaking a 500km non-stop ride around Herne Hill Velodrome (over 1100 laps of the track) outdoors + overnight under winter skies, to help raise money for the Herne Hill Velodrome foundation and the RNLI. I’m incredibly passionate about both of these charities, and I’m really grateful for the chance to support them.

I’ll be announcing some exciting fundraising events and opportunities in the near future, but if anyone has any warm cycling gear I can borrow, or wants to join me for a training ride over the next few weeks, please let me know!
