I sat down with legendary ethnobotanist and community builder Stephen Brooks to understand why we need to move beyond sustainability and “make a radical shift”.

The feedback has been amazing on this latest episode. I’ve been wanting to speak to @stephenrbrooks for a long time.

Picture this: we’re travelling back from Kakuma Refugee camp , after one of the most impactful experiences of our life, we stopped in the Turkana region and stop to reflect and admire the view... vast landscapes with no towns or people in sight, just us and the endless valley.
Then, out of the blue, we have this magical encounter. Three Samburu warriors, come to greet us, welcoming us into their world. I had some Bungafruit from Tanzania with me and immediately thought to share it! We didn’t need words – laughter and intention did all the talking!
It was a heartwarming reminder of how simple acts can bridge worlds. It shows that no matter where we come from, or what language we speak, we can connect, laugh, and share moments using nature and fruit as a catalyst! 🌍Video by @sharybomb 🤍🌈 taken in Kenya by @stephenrbrooks

By many metrics the world today is better than ever before. Poverty, infant mortality and food insecurity are at all time lows. Democracy, education and literacy at all time highs.

Yet there’s still so much room for improvement.

Evidence of non-linear progress in each of these areas provides hope for humanity. Hope that humans are fundamentally ‘good’ and that we can continue to progress and make the world better. Even if it’s not linear progress

Hope that we can tackle big issues like climate change and regenerate the earth. The topic of episode #336 with my friend and ethnobotanist @stephenrbrooks.

Let’s leave this place better than we found it.

This house began with a vision… and a cattle farm. 🌱🏡

Before La Ecovilla existed, this land was open pasture in the hills of San Mateo, Costa Rica 🇨🇷

One of the people who imagined something different, a community where families live with the land, not off it, built his own home right here. 🌳✨

Today the pasture is a food forest 🍃 The gardens are shared 🥭 And families from around the world call it home 🌎

And for the first time ever… his home is available. 👀

🔑 Comment VISION and I’ll send you the full story and private tour details.

📌 Save this for your Costa Rica dream board.
💬 Share it with someone who’s always said “one day we’ll move to Costa Rica…”

All around the world, people are working to regenerate degraded ecosystems. And at the same time, many of us are remembering how plants can help us care for and restore our own bodies.

The potential for healing, both personal and planetary, is enormous. And some of our greatest teachers have been here all along: the plants themselves.

This October, we’re gathering 34 herbalists, medicine makers, clinicians, and teachers who have spent their lives learning from them.

Join us October 14–16 for the FREE online Herbal Medicine Making Summit, with three days of practical, inspiring sessions to bring more herbal medicine into your hands and home.

🌿 Learn what to grow at home with Chris Outdoors (@wildmuskoka)
🌿 Make herbal syrups with accessible ingredients with the Seed Sistas (@seed_sistas)
🌿 Explore a gentler approach to herbs with Asia Suler (@asiasuler)
🌿 Learn alongside Pedram Shojai (@drpedramshojai), Sheleana Aiyana (@sheleanaaiyana, @risingwoman), Seraphina Capranos (@seraphina.capranos), Dr. Jacqui Wilkins, ND (@among_the_wildflowerss), Cait Woolery (@caitlin_woolery_ccmh), Sobande Greer (@iamsobandeg), Tara Lanich-LaBrie (@themedicinecircle), Darin Olien (@darinolien), and Tarun Nayar (@modernbiology101)

Baobab, Huachuma & Dragon Fruit 🌵🌳 | Exploring with Stephen Brooks

Continuing through the desert collection with Stephen Brooks, and almost every few steps there’s another extraordinary plant.

We pass the striking saber tree, followed by a baobab growing inside the glasshouse — one of Africa’s great ethnobotanical trees. Then we reach Huachuma, or San Pedro, the sacred Andean cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi), with a ceremonial history stretching back thousands of years in South America.

And then we find one of Stephen’s favourites — dragon fruit. 🌵🐉 The climbing cactus (Selenicereus spp.) produces those spectacular pink-skinned fruits and enormous, often night-opening flowers adapted to nocturnal pollinators.

What I love about this collection is seeing plants from completely different dryland cultures and ecosystems growing alongside one another — each carrying its own ecology, chemistry and relationship with people.

🌳 Baobab — Adansonia
🌵 Huachuma / San Pedro — Echinopsis pachanoi
🐉 Dragon fruit — Selenicereus spp.
