MCRBCN: A Creative Love Letter from Manchester to Barcelona

👀 Quite possibly one of the biggest projects I’ve ever undertaken. 👀

After months in the making, I can finally share that I’ve conceived and curated a new design exhibition launching this September in Barcelona during La Mercè, the city’s iconic festival.

With Manchester named as this year’s partner city, Marketing Manchester asked me to build upon BCNMCR, my 2013, 2014 and 2023 project that helped bring Barcelona creatives to exhibit in Manchester.

Now, we flip the direction.
BCNMCR becomes MCRBCN.

40 emerging creatives. 14 established ones. 2 cities. 1 bold statement of design culture.

At the heart of the show is a series of large-scale freestanding cubes, each one co-designed by a pair of emerging creatives, one from Manchester and one from Barcelona.

Each pair has been invited to create a love letter to their city. One piece, two perspectives, four sides.

A physical expression of collaboration, creativity and cross-cultural connection.

Alongside these, 14 large-scale banners (each over 2.5m tall) designed by leading Manchester creatives frame the space, showcasing the city’s full creative spectrum, from the emerging to the established.
The exhibition takes place at OPENBCN Studios in Gràcia.

Public opening: Thursday 25 Sept, 1pm
Launch event: 5:30pm, with short talks by myself and Àlex Gobern Gorris, President of ADG FAD.
Huge thanks to Marketing Manchester for backing the vision and creating space for real connection between two brilliant creative cities.
It’s about more than just showcasing work.

It’s about what happens when you bring people together.

So that’s it. Weeks and weeks of worrying. Wondering what the hell to talk about and if anyone would even come and listen. I’m finally on my way home from @offfest - I struggle at times to articulate what I want to say and I’m conscious all the fucking time of not posting self congratulatory wanky nonsense on social media. Honestly! But the fact I was literally sick with nerves before this talk and still managed to put myself through it. Well I just thought I’d put a post out. Thanks for anyone who came and for everyone who messaged me on social media. ✌🏻 by @studiodbd

An old car park in Ashton-in-Makerfield is becoming a new public square/market place.

And with it comes a new identity for Ashton-in-Makerfield.

I’m really pleased to finally share Ashton Square, a new destination brand created for Wigan Council and the people of Ashton-in-Makerfield.

I spent a lot of time talking to and engaging with people in the area. At a time when Ashton was attracting plenty of national attention for political reasons, I wanted to look beyond the headlines and understand the stories, character, heritage and people that really make the place what it is.

The idea started with something that has always been part of Ashton...Making.

Ashton was built by people who made things. And that spirit hasn’t gone away. People still make things, make memories, make connections, make celebrations and make communities.

So we created Made in Makerfield - A platform designed to grow and develop with the people who use the square.

The bespoke wordmark for ASHTON SQUARE takes typographic inspiration from Ashton’s history of hinge making, translating the forms of hinges and locks into bold, distinctive letterforms.

The wider identity draws further inspiration from other mechanical forms, tools and crafted components, alongside warmer colours and people-focused imagery. Ribbon-like elements reference Ashton’s Walking Day tradition and its connection to the historic market site. It was the place where families once came to buy the ribbons used to make dresses, banners and decorations for the celebrations.

The result is deliberately confident, practical and full of character. Reflecting what the people of Ashton asked for. A brand that celebrates the town for what it is, rather than apologising for it.

And importantly, it’s meant to be unfinished. Because the brand is designed to continue to be made by the people who use the square.

Ashton Square is currently taking shape and is due to open next year. I can’t wait to see what gets made there and how this project continues to develop. Follow @ashton.square for more information.

The guys @altogetherotherwise are always up to something. Usually something creative, fun and enjoyable. Which is probably why working for them is too.

The Fan Club of Everything is no exception.

A series of workshops taking place this summer in a relaxed, really creative space. There’s drawing, writing, gardening, collage and pottery. Basically, loads of doing, loads of making things and loads of screen-free stuff for kids.

And it’s totally FREE to go along and have a go.

I created a colourful, type-based identity for the events, designed to work across everything from stickers and window vinyls to all the other bits and pieces needed to bring the Fan Club to life.

Once officially launched, the @trafford_is identity will start to come to life across a wide range of applications.

From digital advertising and social content through to tote bags, event materials and other physical areas.

The strength of the identity is in its simplicity. Designed around a clear idea of connection, discovery and bringing together everything happening across the borough, the system has been created to be flexible and easy to apply as the brand continues to grow. ⚡️
Whether it will be used on screen, in print or out in the community, the identity has the ability to adapt while remaining recognisable and consistent.

As with any identity, the more it is used, the more it becomes established. Building familiarity and helping people connect with everything Trafford Is has to offer.

How do you create a brand that captures everything happening across Trafford?

Introducing @trafford_is A new identity celebrating the people, places and experiences that make Trafford.

Trafford Council asked StudioDBD to create a brand identity for their new digital platform.

The challenge was to create something that could represent the diversity of Trafford while remaining simple, flexible and practical for the Council team to use every day.

As part of the process, we held a community engagement workshop and spoke with around 100 people about what Trafford means to them. These conversations helped shape the identity, from the tone of voice and photography style through to the visual language.

At the heart of the identity is a symbol inspired by the distinctive lightning bolt from Trafford’s coat of arms, reimagined as a spark of creativity, connection and shared experiences.

The mark itself is built from three simple elements: a house, reflecting the community’s view that Trafford feels like home; a guidepost, representing the platform as a destination for discovering what’s on; and a square, symbolising the ambition to connect all four corners of the borough.

Together, they create a distinctive and flexible identity rooted in both place and purpose.

The wider identity system builds on this idea of movement and discovery, creating a visual language that adapts across digital platforms, events and communications while encouraging people to explore everything Trafford has to offer.

There’s so much I want to say about this project in Ashton-in-Makerfield, and honestly, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what’s been happening so far.

Earlier today I shared an instagram story about needing to get better at pulling together case studies of my work. I had loads of replies with different opinions, but one thing that came up a lot was: to not be afraid to just share the work.

Maybe that’s one of the downsides of working on your own. You overthink it. You wait until everything feels perfect instead of just putting it out there.
This project has involved creating a bespoke typeface inspired by the heritage of Ashton-in-Makerfield, alongside a huge amount of research that’s feeding into what will become some really important placemaking and branding across the town centre.

Thankfully it’s also a place that’s completely flown under the radar recently and definitely hasn’t had any national or political attention... 😬

As part of the wider branding and placemaking project, Art Corner is now happening. It’s a brilliant initiative from @outhousemcr and @everydaywigan - giving local people the chance to be part of the exciting changes happening in the town. I had the pleasure of creating the visuals to help bring it to life.

And I genuinely mean it when I say... there’s much more to come.

Ashton-in-Makerfield really is where it’s at and I’m absolutely loving being part of its story. #madeinmakerfield by @studiodbd
