Lily’s Orchid
120 cm x 40 cm
Acrylic Mixed Media Painting on glass
2021

Happy to see this painting received an Honorable Mention in Teravarna’s 6th Flower competition! Thank you so much!

Painted on glass, this piece has a translucent and fragility. The painting attempts to capture Lily, her spirit and beauty. Cantonese, born, raised in Vietnam, immigrated to the US as a team during the Vietnam war, she is exceptionally refined and elegant, like a Chinese orchid. The abstract flowers pictured here depict a spring time blossoming. Of the Four Noble Gentlemen (四君子), the Orchid is Spring.

It’s been quiet as I process the recent passing of my father. I hope his words can be a blessing to all. He was a great healer and touched many lives. It can be heartbreaking to think of all he survived, with a joyful smile, always focused on the positive. He would find a way to uplift, with a compassionate heart. He was generous and understanding. I’m sure some forthcoming art will be part of my journey through these mysteries of being. His parting words, “Remember some of my jokes.” by @studiohozuki

It’s official! Studio Hozuki has moved to Onex. (Beautiful hozuki sculptures by @cobamae . Photos by yours truly.)

Here in Onex for 13 months. Then we’ll move again. Doing my best with this instability.

It’s a pervasive instability, not just in the US. I won’t deny it’s taken up a lot of my headspace and heart space. All the more reason to hold tight to what you love and give more to that love.

Hot off the press, is news about an Amazon Data center opening near Santa Cruz. I hope construction can be stopped! The long term impact it will have on the community as well as our precious and fragile environment is horrific. See stories.

Even though this is an art feed, it feels impossible, not to speak out about all that is going on. It’s too much! Without people pushing back, they’ll just get away with all that they can. Which could mean the end to our democracy. I have been in deep reflection on what I can do as an artist around the current state of affairs. Hence, a lot of ruminating on eggs! The quintessential, creative element.

For the people wondering what I’m up to: 2 relocations. Piecing the studio together. Lots of travel. For the rest, stay tuned and keep loving. taken in Onex, Switzerland by @studiohozuki

I’m a bit late for an Easter post. Had a lovely visit with family in Bern. I haven’t decorated eggs in ages, so it was fun to see how the Swiss do it. April is the month of Aries, but this goat is actually popular subject at the Residency at Château Orquevaux. Making some sketches and enjoying the Spring. It’s the season for new life, and it’s apparent that is what is needed, and so longed for.
